This is the movie that got me into anime many years ago. It's the first anime-related thing I saw that wasn't made for small children, and it opened my eyes to the existence of darker and deeper anime...

Princess Mononoke was my VERY FIRST Studio Ghibli film, and I instantly fell in love with them. There's just some very beautiful, magical and very captivating about how they do each film. If you guys haven't already, I HIGHLY recommend Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, Kiki's Delivery Service, and My Neighbour Totoro.

Yes, it was most Americans’ VERY FIRST Ghibli movie, and so wrong a choice, it almost literally ended Disney’s US deal with Ghibli overnight. Fortunately, Disney grudgingly gave Ghibli a second try with Spirited Away, and Ghibli’s US reputation was saved. Even if you weren’t watching anime on college campuses with the cool underground kids in ‘99 😎, savvier folk already knew Ghibli from the 90’s US dubs of My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service.

It's a good job I'm not English and not American.😅

@@robbiecook6530 Yes, after Mononoke, Disney continued to release dubs to UK and Europe, but wouldn’t touch US with toxic gloves for most of ‘99-‘01. It helped unite the early online anime community to tell Disney “Hey, this was a freak isolated incident, they get BETTER!”

They say that whichever Ghibli movie you watch first will be your favorite. Now you guys have to watch Kiki's Delivery Service. The best Ghibli movie.

Very true. I think Spirited Away is a masterpiece, and it deserves every accolade. But Princess Mononoke was my first Studio Ghibli, and is my favourite. 😁

I love how immediately tuned in to the story you both were! 3:33 “It’s angry.” Anger is such an important theme of this film. Obviously being angry doesn’t make us evil, it’s an emotion like any other and can sometimes even be a powerful force to encourage us and spur us on. Anger can be righteous. We see this in Ashitaka and San. But uncontrolled anger, anger which has become blind hatred, is a corrupting force. It consumes us from the inside out and makes us lose our humanity. We turn into demons just like the Boar God.

One of my favorite movies ever!! Better than Dances with Wolves and Avatar! There are only so many stories...it is how they are executed that matters.

You two are so great. I love watching your reactions. This was especially nice because these Ghibli movies are so beautiful and deep and intense. You never fail to impress me with your command of the English language, too. I'd enjoy seeing Marian (Marion?) react to more of these since he hasn't seen them. They're all good, and everyone has their favorites. I happen to be a Totoro fan. Spirited Away was my first. Also, if you want to watch another GREAT film about the world out of balance, either privately or on your channel, I highly recommend Koyaanisqatsi. You'll understand if you experience it. I think it would be fun for your channel, but it's not your average film. Thank you for the entertainment! :)

29:21 i remember watching this years ago, and thinking it's horrible they want to kill their gods, and and destroy their forests, it reminds me of the film "X-1999" they have gods of the earth, and gods of the sky fighting each other, and humans in the middle. it's an anime as well, you two should check it out if you liked this one! there are so many amazing anime films out there, Spriggin, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Metropolis, Ninja Scroll,... the list goes on. another great reaction! 👍

My favorite Miyazaki is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It’s from before Studio Ghibli , in ‘84 so the art is a little more dated. But the setting story and the empathy of the main character is top tier.

Too many fluffy and feel-good environmental movies up to this point (Fern Gully, etc...). I liked the "respect nature... OR ELSE!!!" message in this one.
