A few video episodes while conducting maintaining, calibration fire and live fire exercises of the ship's Mk 45 (Mod 2) 5-inch/62 caliber lightweight gun.
Development started in the 1960s as a replacement for the Mark 42 gun system. The gun is designed for use against surface ships, anti-aircraft and to support amphibious operations on the shore. The gun mount features an automatic loader with a capacity of 20 rounds.

Actually this is the 5" 54 Caliber Mod 2 gun system, but rather similar to the 5" 62 caliber. When you see them load here they are loading the drum, not typically done. Usually the drum is loaded by the hoist, which extends down into the magazine. Once rounds are in the gun no further personnel contact is necessary. The gun is controlled and pointed from the ships (radar) weapons control system. This gun is one of the more complex hydraulically operated, electronically controlled machines on the planet. I worked and taught this system for 30 years and learned something new every day. Techs that are really good at their trade would know me. Carry on.

@@mattmargerum9618 Matt that would have been a Mk 42 gun, but yes, a 5"54 as well. That had twice the fire rate of the Mk 45, but again, an awesome machine. Very complex both mechanically and hydraulically. Both designed and built in Fridley MN. Many guns were rebuilt at the Navy "gun Factory" in Louisville KY. That is actually where the guns are built these days. A gunners mate in the Navy is trained and exposed to a tremendous amount of technology!

Master Cylinder we were artists is Pittsfield Naval Sea Systems. That rubber insulation was wrapped and edges glued on the shell rib wraps. Pieces were precut like puzzle pieces, glue applied to the shell and rubber and then the glue was reactivated with a solvent right before you applied it. It was the first time I ever saw that foam that expands as it was sprayed. Later a plastic layer was spray applied. It was a turquoise or teal color. A we got father behind in production it became...just slap that shit in there.

Lovely video! I just bought a 5in shell casing, likely fired ~2010 based on another identical casing the place I found it in had. It's a steel case. This video makes me thing the biggest dent in it, hell, most of the dents in it, were caused by slamming into the deck after ejection! If any of y'all are internet wizards who want to take a look, have at this information about the shell Stamped into the base, it says 'MK 9 MOD1 54 CALL', with 'ADL 2847224 14' and 'NIV90C00 1-010'. Printed on the bottom it says '8326', 'MCA91H001-057', with a large 'U' under it. The fuze has 'MARK 45 MOD 1' with 'ME 189L001 011' stamped into the bottom.

The gun shield/shell has no room inside for people. It is filled very tightly with equipment and the gun breach moves back and downward to a vertical position after firing and a new round is pushed up from below. Below the gun deck is the loader station where people load the shells in a revolving cylinder rack. I would bet you could search here and see the entire operation in detail.

It can punch through modern warship armor, since we stopped putting thick armor on them, but doesn't have enough punch to sink them. It's more like 'throwing everything you have at the enemy' type of scenario where its better to have a gun than not having one in a fight even though you know it won't be much effective. It can also track aircrafts and fire at them by predicting where they'll go.
@xboxgorgo18
@xboxgorgo18 4 жыл бұрын
@@vemundr9263 First, you must compare the same types of ships from WW2 with their modern counterparts. The most common ship, the destroyer, was no more armored then than it is today. They were known as “tin cans” for this reason. In fact, some destroyers were sunk by machine gun fire from fighter aircraft. The aircraft carriers today are better armored than their WW2 counterparts, at least those built during the war. Current carriers have armored flight decks, as opposed to wooden decks used during WW2. The best armoured ships during WW2 were battleships and heavy cruisers, which you are probably thinking of. There are no modern equivalents. The development of aircraft, and later missiles meant that enemy fleets could be destroyed long before they were within range of the old battleships, rendering their big guns useless. Rather than layering on tons of thick steel to defend against incoming shells fired from opposing battleships, which would substantially increase cost, and reduce the speed of modern warships, they rely on active defense systems, such as missiles and the CIWS automatic cannon to destroy enemy missiles before they hit. Yes, a single hit from a harpoon would cripple or even sink a destroyer. But, it may take several attempts at launching harpoons in order for one to get past the defenses and actually score a hit.

It’s a small ship. And technology probably allows a massive amount of damage to come from smaller shells, so why add more weight and complexity to a ship that’s not meant to be a battleship? Just my thoughts on the matter. I’m sure a 5inch projectile fits the needs of the ship perfectly among the dozens of guided missiles I’m sure are on board.

Ok but like Russian tanks when the loader breaks the gun becomes non mission capable. A horrible thing to happen in combat.

Good evening, I am writing from Argentina. Can someone help me? I am looking for information about a person who is a United States Naval Engineer and he is at sea now and I do not know anything about him and my brother cannot see if someone can guide me to get information about him. His name is Elijah Enrich. All information will be useful. I would like to know from him that he is not the medium, but someone knows him there. Muy lindo todo 👍👍
