MK2 ESCORT PROJECT - SOUNDPROOFING, UNDERLAY & CARPET FITTED!

In this weeks episode I'm inside the escort trying to make some progress and turn the interior into a carpeted haven! I start by applying some soundproofing / vibration control hex roll, which cut to shape with ease & stuck to the surfaces really well. I did apply a lot of the hex roll to the escorts floor pans but I've heard the more the better and I hope this will aid the reduction of outside road noise.
The underlay was brilliant and was cut to size for a standard escort floor. I had to slightly trim the front drivers side piece but other than that I was surprised at how well the pieces fitted. I applied some carpet adhesive before fitting the sections of underlay and that helped them stick to the floors.
Having searched for a moulded carpet for weeks I settled with a 2 piece universal wide tunnel carpet from Works Escort Parts UK. This took a few hours to get into the right position and spray down fully. Once I had slightly trimmed sections I was happy with the result. As I say in the video once I have the lower door trims & kick panels the interior should look much better.
Overall great progress and I can now see the interior of my Mk2 Escort coming together! It's all systems go in the garage now, to get the engine and box in & all plumbed in/wired up.

you could use a carpet steamer to help mould the carpet to the shape of your gearbox tunnel

Great job Mitch, really is looking good now. Auto carpets are like hens teeth, I dyed mine from blue to black as it was the original auto one. Great idea with the newspaper! With the cost of living and strike news, it may as well been from 1979!

"Stand on it" 😂 Nice one, Lauren!! Get some foil tape & a plastic roller from b&q to fix the tear. Do the entire bulkhead panel too. I'm covering the entire interior on the Viva, roof & all. The foil tape seals the joints. Cheers. Leigh.

Looking great Mitch 👍🏻👍🏻 Don’t forget to poke holes where your seat runners bolt through unless you did it and there is a reverse wire that goes under the carpet and through a hole to connect to your reverse switch on the gearbox , you will have to buy a bit of mild steel tube for your clutch cable to slot into as you cut it off didn’t you and it has to be a certain degree welded on , I can always help with what size you need and what angle as mine has it still 👍🏻

Brings back some memories, my dad bought my very first car when I passed my test. It was a MK2 escort estate in brown, I was mortified. Two reasons it was brown and an estate!!. However when I look back it was a really reliable car and so easy to drive and cheap to run.

You could do with a spreader plate on the gearbox mounts, tack the heads of the bolts onto the spreader plate and hey presto no need to get you carpet up and you’ve saved the floor too

those inner sills let noise + water in [high speed through a watersplash], so it would be a good idea to sound deaden them, failing that, get the gaffer tape out my '80 escort had a mat-black finish to the panel under the back seat check on your h/brake lever, most had a switch on, [ie cable reqd.] keep up the good work young man

I will probably have to peel back some of the carpet to put the wires in, but I believe they only go down the sill so won’t be too hard to install!

You are sailing along it will make tyre smoke soon. Question for you, can you take a sump off with the subframe on ? My guess is we can but replacing gasket and reinstalling sump I am guessing difficult not to make a tits off. What do you think ?
