How to do a Liqui Moly Diesel Purge on a MK4 Golf with almost 250k miles on the clock. This is a 130PD engine code ASZ. What you will need is aprox. 2 meters of clear tubing with a inner diameter of 8mm, 2 x 8mm pipe connectors, an in-line filter with 8mm outer diameter connectors and a can of diesel purge. You'll also need a empty bottle, scissors and pliers.
All of these can be purchased on ebay fairly cheap. This whole setup cost me around £16.
UPDATE 03/09/17: This car in question is still running with 264K+ miles on the clock!
UPDATE 17/02/18: New video showing differences in engine configuration on an Audi A4 has been uploaded!

This is excellent. Love how you used the pre-filter for the old Mercedes 123 diesel on the return line. I always hated to see the crap going back into the bottle when I did my '84 300d.

It does work I did a diesel purge on my 1981 Mercedes Benz 240d. If you live in California the only way to get the LiquiMolly is on EBay or Amazon. I have not found this in any of the automotive stores. Pelican Parts and Mercedes Source also carry this chemical.

For anyone else wondering, non PD engines don't have a pump in the fuel tank, hence the "loopback" tubing seems to be an unnecessary step for those cars (1999-2003 MKV TDIs here in the US). I know because I just did this procedure on my car today.

Hate to possibly correct, but you say "1999-2003 MKV TDIs", don't you mean MKIV? And, I know someone WITH an 03, and their's IS a PD, and DOES have a fuel lift pump.

Hi there, thanks for this video. You seem really good at responding to the comments even all these years later, so I just wondered if you may know the answer as to why my bottle of diesel purge is just getting filled up with diesel? Is it likely that the fuel pump fuse needs removing? Many thanks

Good job mate, but thats oil in the fuel. U could of save urself time by ordering a fuel pum and tandom pump service kit which is cheaper than the purge. Rebuild it and fuel the car up with 10L diesel and 5L petrol, change the fuel filtre. Drive it hard until the fuels gobbled up. Sorted.. u shud do this with every timing belt change. 60k. Keeps the engine health in check

You mention at the beginning of your vid, something about avoiding getting air into the fuel system? When your replacing filters, damaged rubber pipes etc, you ARE introducing air into the system, and cannot avoid that. So you have to prime the system instead, unless it's self priming.
@ytjythteregr
@ytjythteregr 8 жыл бұрын
The engine has a tandem pump that pulls the fuel up from the filter so a bit of air in the lines from the filter to the engine is ok, it would only be an issue if you had air in the lines from the tank to the filter as sometimes the lift pump in the tank fails and you dont know because when there is no air in the lines the tandem pump can bring the fuel from tank with no issues but when the lines have air in them from the tank and the lift pump is broke, the tandem pump hasn't got enough power to bring the fuel all the way from the tank and through the filter. LJ.
@johnrichardson544
@johnrichardson544 8 жыл бұрын
Lawrie Jordan Not sure I fully get that? Do you know why the air issue causes problems for the tandem pump? Surely it's just effectively sucking on the line, the same as I would suck on a rubber hose for example? Also, do you know if I turned the ignition key (without starting the engine) to activate the fuel lift pump, does that pump have enough power to be able to force the diesel through the tandem and out the return line that goes into the fuel filter? I'm guessing it doesn't?

That inline filter won't show you any results, the fuel that travels down the return line hasn't passed through the injectors it's simply traveled into the injector rail and back out again, anything you see in that filter is just out of the lines and the rail

Way too complicated. I just took out the fuel filter, emptied from the bottom nut (first a little water to the sewer then the fuel in a separate bottle ), then poured the purge on the filter and reconnect everything. As a little of purge is left in the bottle you pour it in the fuel bottle and then to the tank. Its nice to do it whe you change the fuel filter as part of the usual maintenance.

Anirudha Arvind It needs to be a paper type filter just like the one in the video, the mesh screen type ones will just let the dirt particles pass through. Doesn't need to be specifically for diesel fuel. I got them off eBay, just search 8mm fuel filter and you'll see them.

I've done exactly that on my SEAT ibiza 2009 with 105000km ! Except I continue till the engine stop but itself ... and then I couldn't restart it. I knew it was because air got into it. I have been recommended to spray some toilet freshener into the tube that goes to the air filter which I did ! After a small explosion sound: The car started straightaway. The only thing is, since then, purging and all ... the car make a sound of vibration which I can feel on the pedal while passing the gear 1 and 2....after pushing the accelerator the vibration goes away. I've been told it was the flywheel .... why ? Is it because of the purge ? Do you know what went wrong ? .....Thanks for reading this !
@Lozzy07
@Lozzy07 8 жыл бұрын
+Alain Jean The purge shouldn't have done anything to cause damage to the flywheel. My own engine tends to vibrate on idle unless you touch the pedal, diesels can rattle a bit. I would not suspect the flywheel has an issue though unless it's been showing other symptoms beforehand.
@AlainNoirmoutier
@AlainNoirmoutier 8 жыл бұрын
+Lozzy07 Thanks Lozzy07, it's kind of a relief what you are saying as I have been told the same by a few other people: that it has nothing to do with the purge. However, I can't get that into my mind as these vibrations weren't present before the purge and appeared just right after it...maybe something's been missing in the process.

How is it that the engine starts ok despite you breaking the flow lines and, presumably, letting some air in?
@Lozzy07
@Lozzy07 5 жыл бұрын
There is already fuel left over in the lines leading upto the tandem pump, so it has enough to start and can therefore drag enough fuel/solution through to continue to run. It does cough and splutter to begin with but runs OK after that initial response. It's the same as replacing the fuel filter during service, some air will inevitably enter the fuel lines, so long as it isn't an excessive amount, you should get away with it.

+l_l_lAdidasl_l_l TM Either way will work just fine. I put the filter on the return line to stop them polluting the clean solution in the bottle. If you put the filter on the feed line, it will simply filter the solution before it goes to the injectors, so to be fair either way will work.

+l_l_lAdidasl_l_l TM Without seeing your exact engine can't really help with that one. Although I think the layout is similar to the MK4 TDi such as the one in the video, so may be the same line I used. As discussed though, shouldn't be an issue with which one you filter.

@Lozzy07
@Lozzy07 9 жыл бұрын
westmakati You can do either I suppose, I've done mine on the return line to filter out any deposits coming back from the engine, so they don't pollute the solution that's being fed into the engine. If you do it on the feed line then it will filter it before it goes to the engine, so to be honest either way will work.

what does it mean if fuel does not return circulate in the small loop on the car? is there a pump not running?
@ytjythteregr
@ytjythteregr 9 жыл бұрын
+Bull Moose That could indicate the lift pump in the fuel tank is either not working or not providing enough pressure to push fuel to and past the fuel filter. This would only be a problem if the car was ran dry of fuel as the tandem pump on the engine can bring the fuel through when there is no air in the system, but if you run out of fuel, the tandem pump will not be able to pull fuel all the way from the tank so you won't get the car to start again until the lift pumps been replaced.
