MK5 GTI - LED Fog Light Conversion

Today I show you how to swap your dull, OEM fog light bulbs to aftermarket LED bulbs, specifically in a MK5 Volkswagen GTI! LED bulbs are far brighter than standard bulbs and are white in color, so they match HID headlights. Doing a LED fog light, tail light, reverse light or headlight installation is far simpler than most people think.

they look really cool and they're definitely brighter but the color temperature is not going to help for actual fog if that's what your going for

I mostly installed them for the look and am currently using them as additional driving lights at night because they're super bright. I haven't tested them in actual fog just yet

Quite a bit. It’s a really significant difference. These could almost be used as driving lights with their brightness but since they’re fogs they’re mounted low and don’t project super far

These didn’t because they have built in resistors, I just put a set without those in my Passat and got my light on

Any way after the conversion to get rid of "defective for light warning on dash?

If you get higher end LEDs like these they are a direct plug in light that shouldn't trigger any codes, you could try clearing all your codes and seeing if it goes away

Can they be dimmed to be used as drl, in a similar manner to halogen?

They could be dimmed using aftermarket OBDII tools or a VAG com but there’s no setting to do it on the lights or from the car normally

Nope! Higher end LEDs won’t cause any problems
