For those who don't see the value of a steel pan...I live in NY state. Not uncommon for blocks of ice to fall off vehicles. I encountered one of these one morning while driving to work in my brand new Golf. (Too dark to see before I hit it.). Minor thud. Drove about four miles to work. At quitting time I walked out to my car to find it sitting in a "lake" of oil.

And speaking of ice and cold, the Mk 7.5 GTI can't have a block heater installed. For people who live in sub zero climates, the only other way to keep the oil warm for cold start ups is an oil pan heater... Which requires a steel oil pan. Not a cheap plastic one.

Whenever I'm using sealant like this I screw in two or three longish grub screws to make alignment easier. Once I've got a few bolts in I take out the grub screws and replace with original bolts. I think that idea would work well for lining up the sump on this conversion. Good product in my opinion. I'd rather dent a steel sump than risk a crack in a composite/plastic part.

Great video! i just bought my first new car yesterday which is a MK7 GTI S and you guys at DAP really helped me with that decision so thank you and I will definitely be buying parts from you guys soon. Back on the topic of the video, you guys should maybe try to include some sort of Snap-Ups clips to hold the pan up to help with the install. Don't know if that's a possibility for you but when i did the oil pan on my 94 F150 it was a real headache saver. Keep up the good work!

so bad! well, firstly, this video is awesome and really really helpful!! It works, and let me tell you this pan is darn easy to screw up without this video. But I still screwed up because I purchased from ECS tuning... that one has serious quality issue!! The mount for oil sensor is not good, the screw can not go straight on it and eventually it won't go any further, leaving a loose sensor! I applied very heavy strength to force it down, I guess it works in the end? But no way to torque it, and no way to tell if it will cause problem eventually. The OEM plastic has so many little pieces to help sealing (really high quality in details, really) but none on the steel one - again I suspect it will leak oil around the oil sensor. Then, the pan screws are only 1/2 length of OEM ones wtf? well it still works I think. In general I think it's a poorly produced steel pan that might work, unfortunately I applied the sealant on the wrong side of the screws, leaving oil leaking from screw holes, stupid me. Desperately took it down, cleaned up the sealant on the upper pan, omg, reinstalled OEM ones -- I just reused the original screws, I will replace them if they show problem in the future. But again, this video is perfect and I almost got it right! Easily.

Is anyone running a Fumoto valve on the plastic or metal pans? I ran them on all my vehicles including a lowered Subaru. It is nice to not require tools or to lift a vehicle to do an oil change. Looks like the 106S will fit. I've never thought that magnetic oil (unlike transmission) plugs were useful since you have a fine paper oil filter that gets changed. Do people actually find silt or shavings on the magnets?

I changed out my oil pan to to the exact one and it keeps on leaking from the oil level sensor. I'm thinking the gasket for it is bad. My car has about 60,000 miles on it. Could it be possible that the gasket is just old? But I'm wondering why it wasn't leaking when it was on the old oil pan? Any advice?
@uppastdawn7627
@uppastdawn7627 4 жыл бұрын
A lot could have happened- over torqued, under torqued, dry seal, maybe it was compromised when it was pulled off the old one. I would snag a new gasket and replace it at your next oil change. I try not to reuse gaskets and seals- case in point: the canister style oil filters come with a new seal, so they don’t intend you to reuse those, either.

ECS tuning has a Aluminum pan with a rubber gasket just like the OEM pan. Spend the extra $100 and invest in that. I bought one of these and my first try I had a small leak. Second try it sealed off good and I’m still running it but I have 0 confidence in the sealant, so many things can go wrong if you don’t know how to put the sealant on correctly. I feel much safer with the rubber seal.

Optimally yes, wait 24 hours for it to fully cure, then add oil to the car and go for a drive. That being said in a pinch I only waited 3 hours and it seemed to work fine, but I was removing the part later so it was not planned to be permanent.

Stronger than a plastic pan and what's more likely to happen from an impact is a dent instead of a crack. Cracked pan means you need a new one, dented means it's still alright and the dent can be hammered out. I might do this since I don't have the splash guard covering the front of the pan anymore.

As far as plastic goes, that looks pretty sturdy. Still surprised they would do that though.

Silicone is a deal breaker. Why not just design the pan to use the factory gasket?

Its not but keep in mind cars are not designed with the intention of the oil pan taking an impact.

Deutsche Auto Parts how long do you have to wait for the sealant to cure before putting the oil back in the car??

I cannot believe VW put a plastic oil pan in! OMG! I thought the intake/ valve cover was bad enough.

+ricky johnson the OEM steel pan that is the original application of this pan uses sealant too. So did all the previous generations with aluminum pans. The mk7 is the first VW in over a decade to use an actual gasket(a few less common model excluded). Not sure if that helps make it feel more legitimate or not.

I know it's legitimate and obviously a well made part I just feel like if it came with a gasket it should have a gasket
@Deutscheautoparts
@Deutscheautoparts 7 жыл бұрын
+ricky johnson you can't do that as the pan design doesn't accommodate.

I understand that but if you're designing this part to replace something why not keep it the same? Or is this just a part off an older car that you guys get from an outside supplier?

Almost all Hondas used sealant only for decades. Same with many Japanese cars, really. Sealant is actually less likely to leak than a gasket. Just saying. Holy hell I didn't know anything used a plastic oil pan though.
