It just occurred to me that I haven't seen a farmer use a breaking plow since about 1972. Where I grew up in Tennessee, grain farmers used a chisel plow until they stopped plowing altogether in the late 80s. Now, I'm the only one I know using a breaking plow.

Yes i would assume it's not common over there nowadays. Chemicals for weed control was a game changer.

@@bekabeka71 how deep depends on the soil type, usually dead soil is defined as sand or lack of humus in the soil

The grassroots in the tills prevents them from falling apart. There is no loose soil to throw anywhere. This is not the same as when plowing last years wheat field. So evening out the soil is best done with a harrow, because going faster with the plow here only will only waste a lot of fuel.
