He was merely following orders, found a device that could shorten the length of time it would take to achieve his goal, but along the way realised his battle was M.A.D, and did a noble thing - instead of just letting it happen, he made them coexist. Not only that, but he sunk into the never ending sea of blood to prevent anything undoing what he did.

For those that don't know why "debts of gratitude are often dearly paid", when you saved a warrior's life in battle in the ancient world, you often owed your savior a "Life Debt". That debt can be paid by answering the summons of the savior and risking your life to fight for them or you travel with them until such a time as you're able to save their life in return. Doesn't sound bad, right? Well consider the fact that Kratos (GOW 1-2) has been known to sacrifice ALL of his allies in pursuit of his revenge.
