They were so numerous that when the US demanded that France only show white soldiers in their victory parade, France had to get a bunch of men that weren’t French soldiers and dress them up in French uniforms. The French had integrated forces in both world wars and one of their historically celebrated generals, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas (also the father of Alexandre Dumas, the author of “the three musketeers”), was black.
