Just a FYI: The markings on the filter capped "'58 Waterbottle" indicates that it's not a genuine issue item. I believe BCB make a version (not a standalone issue item to mil but MAY well be included in survival kits issued to mil). If not marked "Osprey" (1970 onwards) or "BCB", avoid. There are some really poor versions which crack/leak and which do not accept the various NBC/CBRN '58 caps . The same applies to the '95 Patt Mugs (aka BCB Crusader mug Mk1): I've seen possible imitations with similar markings less the "BCB" and with a year "2000" instead of 1995. Obviously, the 1995 batch would have run out years ago but does anyone know if any other manufacturer are licensed to make the things?

I have several kits, some self-made, but my favourites are the Swedish army and the Crusader 2, but horses for courses. The Swedish kit is heavier (if both have no water lol) but I do like the fact that the pot stand makes a useful wood burning stove, something hard to do efficiently with the Crusader. The Fire Dragon solid fuel, I think,burns to furious for the kit, a lot of wasted heat that seems to only heat the mug handles, BCB say one unit of the fuel should heat 500ml in five minutes, when most folks get a maximum 8 minutes burn, and no rolling boil water. You have to add another tablet, and that is wasteful as the second tablet finishes the boil but burns on for quite a few minutes after. Having experimented (although I have not timed it yet) I have managed to get one unit of Fire Dragon solid fuel to boil 500ml of water, but man it took some faffing about. I cut the block into quarters, started the fire with one quarter, then, watching the flame, lifted the mug and added the second quarter, then the third to forth. I found that 500ml boiled about halfway through the forth quarter tablet! But I don't think it useful as you need to keep watching the pot lol
@mountainbearoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
I have the Swedish kit as well, its really good but that small top pan handle gets red hot when cooking! I melted one of my socks to it trying to get it off the stove! I think that's why there are D loops to jam a stick in!

I have to agree Funky, the Dutch carry case just looks more sturdy, you could carry your rugby boots in that. Good review and love the fact you are supporting local UK business. Cheers Moose

The major problem with the Mkll mug is that it is aluminium. I know there is still a lot of debate, even amoung the boffins, regarding the health risks with alu & so each will act according to their beliefs but as long as there are some serious doubts out there, I shall stick to the stainless steel mugs for now, especially for acidic things like tea & coffee.
@oldmaninlycra1418 жыл бұрын
There is a debate, BUT, this is anodised Aluminium, and that doesn't leach out as such, also the real issue with Aluminium is IF you cook with it, especially acidic foods like tomatoes, but, as I said, this is anodised, hard anodised, and that means that the first few hundred of microns of the Aluminium is closer to a piece of sapphire than naked Aluminium. I see no issue with Aluminium, especially hard anodised kit like this, but even IF Aluminium did leach out, did you know that you get Aluminium from almost everything you eat and even most of what you drink? Aluminium is the third most abundant element on Earth, it is literally everywhere in microscopic amounts, even the air you breath. Did you know that the recommended maximum daily amount of Aluminium is exceeded if you take indigestion tablets? The fact is, people have used Aluminium for over a century, the oldest military kit is over a hundred years old, yet only now is there even a hint of Aluminium causing problems? Think about that, all the 25 year service squaddies and there has never been any link to Aluminium causing health issues for them, and they've been eating and drinking from the old mess kit tins for decades. Heck, nearly every adult male during the days of national service were using Aluminium to make and eat meals, yet there is no huge leap in diagnosed or suspected Aluminium illnesses. As you indicate, it is personal choice, but I think that given that we have Aluminium all around us, I feel more than safe using it...especially hard anodised kit, I'd say there is more possibility -although slight- of non-stick processes like Teflon having health issues...if we worried about every scare, we'd never eat and drink anything lol
