Sensational writing for strings-Respighi really created something wondrous i this suite. The playing is superb and the whole thing a marvel. Thanks. :-)

Komme gerade von einem Konzert eines New Yorker Kammerorchesters auf YT und freue mich hier über die im Vergleich hervorragende Intonation.

Respighi knew much about what we might call 'early music'. His translations of sets of dances are extraordinary. No need to an actual lute ere-would not be heard anyway. :-)

Good question! "Antiche danze ed arie" is a set of three orchestral suites, freely transcribed from original pieces for lute from the 16th and 17th century. The subtitle of the piece is actually "Trascrizione libera per orchestra".

It is freely arranged in the style of Respighi's time which means late-romantic. Although Respighi was seriously interested in exploring Ancient music, it was not common in his time and the knowledge in "historical informed performance practice" not so advanced that instruments like a lute would have been added to a late-romantic orchestra. To us it's rather a romantic piece than a Renaissance, and I as a conductor would rather feel in service of Respighi's aesthetic idiom than that of his sources.
