This video was an amazing experience , for me this knife was a double edged one, because i was born in Damascus of Syria, and i badly needed to see something positive relating to Damascus..and this video was a reminder of some ancient technique that was invented there. thank you Matti...your love for art, steel and great workmanship was outstanding.

I know people who winge about what high quality knives cost... Its great to see a video on how hard and time consuming making a high quality work of art is... The time, effort and skill put in to a blade like this is why you pay for what you get... Not only will you get years of use out of a knife like this but its a labour of love and a work of art... My hat is off to you...

Breathtakingly Beautiful! The one thing that keeps coming up in my mind is that you were once, in one of your earlier lives, were a master samurai sword maker, one of the very few who knew how to make the highly revered Damascus Steel. You seem to be very humble. I would love to be able to do what you do! The love you have for your pieces is astonishing! Bravo! ENCORE! *Standing Ovation*

Soothsayer88, I can answer some of your questions... The salt like substance is borax, which acts as a flux for the welding process. He also grinds before each weld to remove impurities like scale and slag. M. Kunelius, does an incredible job in this video. There are too many good things I could say but to be concise, outstanding! If you get a chance, post a video of your grinding jig.

Nice to hear that it helps people to appreciate the amount of work involved. That is one of the main reasons I made these videos. With bigger equipment one could make billets large enough to make several blades. The size of mine can handle a two puukko blade billet at max.

Look for a book called "$40 Knife Shop" and another one called "Backyard Blacksmithing". One of the Foxfire books also covers metal working from turning dirt into iron, refining it, forging it, and all the way up to gunsmithing. It's really comprehensive. I started with the first one. And I'm currently tooling up for making Damascus and Mokumegane.

Thank you! Back in the old days, when damascus steel was first invented, it was made using high and low carbon steels to make impure and brittle higher carbon steel more ductile. Nowadays commercially made steels are very pure and lack impurities and I don't believe that using any kind of steels in damascus making would result a better steel than those you begun with. That's my opinion and there might be many who are against it promoting their damascus far superior from commercial single steel.

im not a blacksmith, but i watched a super detailed russian video about making of damascus steel and it was explained there, that these kind of ridges (which could be practically absolutely any desired pattern ( lines, diamond shape and even some simple lined images)) will dictate the pattern of the waves on the blade. if one does not make patterns, then the blade is called wild damascus... something like that
