The amount of violence involved in university life is ridiculous, especially the all-out anti-university riots (similarly as in Oxford). Have you heard of such animosity of the townsfolk towards the Charles University in Prague or anywhere else? I wonder if the situation was inherently different in Paris, Prague or Krakow? As the biggest cites in their respective realms and royal capitals, those municipalities presumably weren't getting nearly as dominated by the universities, and the authority supporting those institutions was at the site. Of course, we all know that Charles University was involved in a lot of unrest, but one indirectly cased by the ideas and teachings of some of its masters.

Haven't done any research in to it so I can't really say for certain but my gut feeling would be that early centuries of every medieval university had some sort of a town and gown problem.

Fair enough but if you're just waiting for a University to reopen you need a close place to wait it out so size doesn't matter that much. Plus it had a bunch of religious establishments at the time (Bradwell Abbey, Snelshall Priory) that could provide help while waiting.
