Watching this as a mets fan was tough

Welcome to Toronto, Giminez! I know Jays fans are a bit shook by this deal right now because Horwitz was the only real other batting threat besides Vladdy last year. However, as much I liked Spencer, he was not the guy to put up a threat behind Vladdy as a cleanup DH. The Jays need a real power threat, as Vladdy was the only one who hit 30 HR and Springer in 2nd place didn't even hit 20. Horwitz hit 12. That's why defense be damned, they're potentially in on guys like Teo or Santander, who hit 33 and 44 HR respectively last year. They will likely regress, but even those are still a legit threat at the least. If Giminez ends up being the only major acquisition like Varsho last year, and supplemental low-power bats like IKF and Turner are the pickups again, I will definitely rejoin everyone in screaming that it's nowhere near enough. However, this was not a bad trade at all. Clearing Horwitz opens the DH slot that they honestly don't have a fantastic internal option at the moment for, they need to acquire someone to fill it. They could give Orelvis a try, but I don't think they shove him in there unless they're just really blind or trying to tank. In exchange for a lower floor DH Spencer, they're filling a hole that's massive since Semien left and preparing for the worst in case Bo leaves next year. It could even be that they keep Bo but finally convince him to move to 2B and bring Giminez back to his natural SS position. This acquisition fills many needs that many fans don't even want to really look at because the most fun, glaring hole to fill right now is the poor batting. 8 Jays took at least one crack at 2B last year: Spencer, Orelvis, Wagner, Biggio, IKF, Ernie, Davis, and Jiminez. They were there to fill the roster, and most of them could barely field their position. Gimenez or sliding Bo to the spot for good adds security to a spot way too many baseballs creep through. Batting killed the Jays last year for sure, but a lot of close losses or even the situations that put them there could have been mitigated with a solid 2B. Remember Bo was also out most of the year, so SS was also rough. This is one sector they really badly did need to fix, and they honestly couldn't have done better here. They got a platinum glove level defenseman for a slot they will hopefully fill with someone considerably better than Spencer was. They just damn well better go and find some more proper power in the lineup. A DH like Teo or Santander for sure, but also potentially a LF or CF that brings more pop or even contact than Varsho does. You keep Varsho in for the defense, but they should shop their crowded infield prospects for a longer term CF or LF hitter.
