Ghostdialoog the Cueto call makes absolutely no sense. The batter rules the box, it's unquestionable. Although once contact is made, the batter has a certain amount of time to run before interference is called. Since Cueto was in the box when he bunted, there is no way he could've gotten out of the way of the ball. Tough luck for the catcher but it is his problem not Cueto.

Eric, There are a lot of things the batter can do. What he can't do is interfere with a fielder attempting to field a batted ball. He needs to get out of the catcher's way. Here is the rule that covers this play; 6.01(b) (7.11) Fielder Right of Way The players, coaches or any member of a team at bat shall vacate any space (including both dugouts or bullpens) needed by a fielder who is attempting to field a batted or thrown ball. If a member of the team at bat (other than a runner) hinders a fielder’s attempt to catch or field a batted ball, the ball is dead, the batter is declared out and all runners return to the bases occupied at the time of the pitch.

OK someone help me out here. I've read the whole interference rule of the 2016 rules and it doesn't mention interference with a throw. Is you take the first examples in this video of runners being called out for blocking the catcher's throw, is there any rule against this? I can't find one. I'm looking for the actual written rule in the rulebook, so please give me a rule to look up, thanks.
@ryanaltfillisch71558 жыл бұрын
So it goes with rule 6.03(a)3. That rule states: "A batter is out for illegal action when...He interferes with the catcher's fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter's box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher's play at home base."
@renardmigrant8 жыл бұрын
So in fact, it doesn't have to be intentional.
@ryanaltfillisch71558 жыл бұрын
No it does not. A common offensive interference is a runner running into a fielder that comes into the baseline to field a ball. The runner generally doesn't intend to run into the fielder but that is still textbook interference.

@generatorx7 жыл бұрын
That is why it is called "batter interference." The intent does not matter. A batter should be trained and should know the rules. If he/she breaks them, hence the penalty. It is much like in a football game if a lineman in a 3 point stance slips and falls forward in the neutral zone before the ball is snapped. He could not control himself, but a penalty will be assessed.
@californiacrunchmuffin29187 жыл бұрын
Interesting, so are they trained to move a certain way? Because I could assume the catcher could just throw the ball into the hitter and claim it was interference.

@ryanaltfillisch71558 жыл бұрын
For an education, there are 2 lines the last half of the first base line. If a runner runs outside of those 2 lines (either in foul territory or fair territory), and there is a play at first base, and doing so interferes with a fielder receiving a throw (aka gets hit with the ball) or fielding a ball, that is interference. Also, yes a batter running into a player trying to field a ball or running into the ball in fair territory, even by accident, is interference. Have you played or watched baseball past tee-ball? I learned those rules when I was like 8.

I can't find the rule in the rulebook covering throws by the catcher (or indeed any fielder). I thought interference had to be wilful and if accidental not an interference call.
@ryanaltfillisch71558 жыл бұрын
Martin - I answered the throws by the catcher in your first comment earlier, and in regards to the "willful" comment, the phrase "willfully and deliberately" only applies to breaking up a double play in rules 6.01(1)6 & 7. There is a comment at the end of rule 6.01(a) that states "A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not." So I'm not sure what play you are exactly referencing but interference does not have to be willful.
@DavidStruveDesigns8 жыл бұрын
If the catcher gets hit by a bat then he's clearly far too close to the batter and it should be HIM getting called for interference on the batter! Do these people not understand how the human body works in relation to momentum and physics? If you swing a bat with that much energy, you can't just stop the motion mid-swing ... well, not without doing some serious damage to yourself or completely letting go of the bat.

Whoever gave this rule the go ahead has no idea how back swing works. As you can see there are 2 lines the last half of the first base line. When running to first on a fair ball, the runner must run between those 2 lines. If the runner is hit with a thrown ball while running and he is not in between those 2 lines, he will be called out for interference.

One of the worst rules in baseball....well actually probably the worst interpreted rules by the umpires, on few occasions are there actual interference, if a batter swings and the swing takes him towards the other batters box then at least in my mind that's not intentional interference....and in the cases where the batter stays in his box and still gets called for interference then that's on the catcher not the batter

Fucking moron, it’s not called intentional interference for a reason...it doesn’t need to be intentional...

It's a difference between runner's and batter's interference.

baseball, the only sport where an opposing player can intentionally run into you while you're standing still and you're the one who's called for interference.....

You aren't supposed to stand still after hitting the ball.
