I feel like I've boiled down the issue pretty well. She's so caught up with trying to be a broadcaster that she stops being a baseball fan invested in the on-field action. Doesn't really matter what the context of the game is, she just wants to get her quips and zingers on air. It's like people who are in love with the pageantry and theatrics of love without being in love with the other person. Good commentators sound like people who, if they got the day off from broadcasting, would buy a ticket and go alone to watch the Tuesday afternoon day game anyways. They love baseball, commentary just happens to be a strong suit for them. Kavnar is in love with commentary, baseball is just the medium she expresses it through. That distinction can lead to those weirdly timed or questionably phrased moments.

Very good comment. And I think this applies to my team's announcer, John Schriffen. He also seems too caught up in trying to be a broadcaster who stands out that it comes out all wrong. Color commentary is the difference. Play-by-play is a different beast. Color can be literally any entertaining banter that gets you from pitch to pitch. There's a lot less stress on just being naturally yourself -- if you're natural self is someone mildly entertaining for one reason or another. Play-by-play is about the game itself and very specifically so. You don't even need to know baseball all that well to be a color commentator. You can pick things up along the way, but your job is just to fill the space between pitches and to not be boring while doing so. They often have interviews of players, celebrities, even bring guests in to fill that role. But the play-by-play is always done by someone with a certain set of skills, and a true love for and understanding of the game. Some people are so talented at both things (cue Vin Scully) that they can call the entire game alone. But not all play-by-play announcers are able to be color commentators or vice versa.

The problem that follows is that anyone that criticizes the job performance can easily be tagged with the "anti" tag (anti-woman, anti-black, anti-gay, whatever) even when the criticisms are objectively fair. A high voice will never sound as good as a low voice, and it throws me off. There is a reason Radio announcers had booming deep voices, and it wasn't because of discrimination. @ThumbFollowMe2 ай бұрын
@@bingobongo8701 I would say that saying she sucks is childish. What does that even mean? She knows her stuff, she does her homework. You have to have more than just, she 'sucks' to claim she is inept at her job.
@brighamsunday27682 ай бұрын
@@bingobongo8701 Yeah, not buying it. Saying she sucks sounds like a cop out and seems much more childish than claiming sexism. Why does she suck? What evidence do you have for that. She knows her content, she has stats, she does a great job. I am listening to her right now - she has got talent. I would still put my eggs in the sexism basket for all of the haters.

Her broadcasts are terrible. She should have acclimated in the minors or college ball before jumping right into the majors.
@menta1case1822 ай бұрын
Those calls you used as examples in the beginning were not good. She doesnt give details of whos head the ball went over, her cheeky sayings and her tone are just not good. Those things can be improved upon if she gives it more effort. But no one is immediately excellent at something new so I would say give her some time. Maybe she can get it together.

To me this lady always sounds like Dee on It’s Always Sunny. She isn’t great to listen to, but she thinks she is and tried to find ways to make us listen to more of her. I remember a game where she struggled to come up with a way to call a homer and referred to the home run as “a four base hit.” I’m not allowed to suck this bad at my job…

I'm sure she'll get better... Jerry Remy wasn't very good when he started out, albeit as an analyst as opposed to the play-by-play announcer, but he be found his voice and became a widely loved fixture in the broadcast booth. I'm sure you're right that A's ownership cheaped out on their broadcaster hire and now Cavnar is unfortunately bearing the brunt of the trolls.

I listened to her when the A's played the A's. It was such a stark difference between her and Ryan Lefebvre and Jake Eisenberg. I do wonder if the A's being such crap and the energy around the team and her being a rookie make it that much worse.
@tboneoutdoors688Ай бұрын
In Colorado she did player interviews and other things like that. She was liked, so when she did play by play here, people were kind and didn’t bash her too much even though she was terrible. She has already established herself as a likable personality in Colorado. Go to the A’s where she is unknown, people are judging her on her play by play skills, and it’s pretty bad.

The problem women will always have with play by play is that if they don't get excited enough during a big play, they will get called out for not being into it. If they get too excited, they sound like a hysterical banshee. Men instinctively think something is wrong when women raise their voice.

I think if she was born and bred A's fan she'd probably be more passionate, so maybe if she ever got the rockies job it'd be better. As for the fact she's a woman, means nothing, but whoever the woman Apple TV had last season (if its the same woman my opinion is so skewed) and I don't know if she's still there this year is awful. That woman talks like she's never seen baseball before. Extra note: as a Brewers fan I feel a bit spoiled, Uecker and the TV team (BA, Rock etc.) are all great. However, when you hit the post season..... Wow. Press mute. Every game is diabolical nonsense. I'm so glad I can choose the audio on mlbtv.
