The pitching staff has been great all season at limiting base runners because that's how runs score. Hitting 3 batters, those first 2 innings who all came around to score was the difference today in a 3-run loss.

Yeah I think Woo was just struggling with location there early. These 2 teams are close anyway, it would take quite a bit more than normal to get them pissed at each other. Marte and J-rod, Fraley with the Mariners and Eugenio with the reds, many good relations.

Mariners have been playing MEH for the last week, but the Home Plate Umpire was really really bad. There exists technology that would allow balls and strikes without a swing to be called 99.99% accurately. Unlike Marvin Hudson, who really had no clue from first pitch to last. Since the Reds were swinging at anything close to the plate, terrible calls did not happen to them very often, but for the M's, who are choosy, there were at least 15 to 20 calls that were flat out wrong. That last call as an inch below the strike zone and Julio was mad and he never gets mad. Many calls the entire game were clearly inside the zone and many were out and he was wrong. Had a bad day? Technology (high speed cameras hooked up to a super computer, relaying yes/no responses in a millisecond to the ump) would solve this problem. But no. We have to live with terrible work. It's infected M's games since they arrived in NYC. Hopefully, the team will get mad and play better

This is why the mariners will never be taken serious as true playoff contenders. Bats are too inconsistent and Julio is not the player, that he showed flashes of last season. He is a good hitter at best but your best player just can't be a "good" hitter.

I think the M’s are def playoff contenders, but Julio is incredibly un-clutch. In this game alone he had two late game opportunities to pull the game back into reach and he struck out both times. I love the dude, but the clutch is not his strong suit

It also doesnt help when the weakest link of your rotation is on the mound and puts you behind early by tossing 3 HBPs all followed immediately by RBIs If any other starter was on the mound today, i think this game goes very differently, at the very least maybe a 1-run game instead of being doubled up.

The problem with the Mariners is their entire pitching staff. All of them, from the starters right through to the closers. If they don't address this issue. The Mariners WILL NOT make the playoffs in 2023. Yes they are in first place. So the division and playoffs. Are in their control. And what that looks like is allowing 3-runs and under each and every game. If they can achieve that level of consistency. They will win the division and advance in the playoffs. If not, their entire season was waisted. Can they do it? We shall see. 'Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, 'It might have been.'
