Honestly, one of the most exciting finishes to a WS game in my recent memory. Anything that puts everyone in the stadium and at home on their feet is frickin' great baseball.

@MANCHESTER UNITED Gosh. I didn't know baseball was in competition with soccer or futbol or girls kickball or whatever it is called. It's odd that something like soccer could be so popular and I have never even once watched more than a highlight clip of it on television. It's not popular with me, kind of like basketball, competitive dart throwing, hurling, or figure skating. I don't like those either.

I’m watching this game in preparation of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final. Hopefully the Blues beat the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final like the Cardinals beat the Red Sox in Games 2 and 3 of the 2013 World Series. Although hopefully the Blues beat the Bruins to win the championship unlike in this series where the Red Sox would end up winning this series. So hopefully in the Stanley Cup Final, it’s St. Louis coming out with the victory and NOT Boston. Boston doesn’t need another championship

It actually doesn't matter if the umpire thought the run would have scored minus the obstruction. On obstruction, all runners advance safely to the base where the umps judge they should have been able to reach, but the runner who was actually obstructed is GUARANTEED at least one base past the last one he touched.
@almostfm7 жыл бұрын
Actually, you only read part of the rule. 7.06(b) says that "If no play is being made on the obstructed runner, the play shall proceed until no further action is possible. The umpire shall then call ‘Time’ and impose such penalties, if any, as in his judgment will nullify the act of obstruction." Because the ball was past Middlebrooks and he wasn't going to be able to retrieve it, he was no longer "making a play" on the runner, and this becomes a "Type B" obstruction-in which case, the umpire decides what "will nullify the act of obstruction". IOW, what would have happened if the obstruction didn't happen. Because Craig busted his ass toward home and made it a relatively close play, the umpires ruled that barring the obstruction, he probably would have scored on the play.
@charliedecker11057 жыл бұрын
CORRECT! Good obstruction call, HOWEVER, his first step after the slide and the ball gets away is back to 2nd base. Then, he is obstructed and therefore, should be awarded 3rd base!
@almostfm7 жыл бұрын
No, because he'd already reached third. Taking a step toward second to get his feet underneath him is not an attempt to go back to second.

Why is Craig running way off the baseline
@musicman76enator8 жыл бұрын
Mmmm kay lol
@almostfm8 жыл бұрын
What he's running "way off" of is the foul line, which is not the same thing. A runner can choose his path to the next base until the defense attempts a play on him. At that point, his baseline is established-a direct line from where he is to the base he's trying to reach. Because there's no play on him when he starts home, there's no baseline. at that time.

Copied from an older version of the official rule book, on umpire bible.com, but also as stated in the rule book PDFs on MLB.com "7.06 - When obstruction occurs, the umpire shall call or signal "Obstruction": (a) If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the batter-runner is obstructed before touching first base, the ball is dead and all runners shall advance without liability to be put out, to the bases they would have reached, in the umpire's judgment, if there had been no obstruction. The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base last legally touched by such runner, before the obstruction. Any preceding runners forced to advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruction shall advance without liability to be put out;"
@almostfm7 жыл бұрын
Except this was a "Type B" obstruction, because a play was no longer being made on him. In that case, it's a delayed dead ball, and the umpire places the runner where he believes the runner would have gotten to had the obstruction not occurred. BTW, Craig did the smart thing by busting his ass for home. Had he just ambled (assuming he would be awarded the base), or just stood at third, he almost certainly wouldn't have been awarded home.

Yes, it was obstruction. However, notice on the replay how Craig's first step after he slides and the ball gets away is towards 2nd Base. Therefore, he was obstructed, and should have been awarded third base.
