National League 1 @ American League, 4, F -- The last All-Star game of the 20th century gathered together baseball's "All-Century" team, the greatest living players of all time. This spine-tingling spectacle was augmented by the appearance of the legend among legends, Ted Williams, on hand to throw out the first pitch. His magnetism led to one of baseball's most spontaneous of magical moments, as the current and All-Century All-Stars gathered around the fragile Splendid Splinter, basking in his greatness for what was perhaps the last time. Finally, the game had to go on; the lovefest was dispersed and Williams tossed the first pitch in front of a delirious crowd. Then AL starting pitcher and Fenway's own Pedro Martinez took the mound, and made a little magic of his own.

RIP Blockbuster.. RIP 20th Century. The pre-show nearly made me cry, tears were in my eyes. God damn i love baseball! I played little league from 4-16 and those were the best damn times of my life, with all the friends I made some of which I still actively keep in touch with today. All because I experienced a slice t of what makes calling America home life great, but the most important part of it all was having my father by my side through the wild and crazy ride.

For those of you who never saw this as it happened, Ted Williams avoided Fenway Park after he retired. This was his first public appearance. It reminded me of the movie CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, when everyone walked up to the aliens. :-) It was also the last time we looked at MLB players with wide eyes and respect. There we see McGwire whom I went out of my way to watch as he belted out home run #53, I collected all tickets that had him break the HR record. Folks tried to obtain those tickets as collectibles and now they are just kindling. Yet seeing Ted Williams was a thrill.

Thank you so much for downloading the entire pre-game, and particularly The Splendid Splinter. He's been my baseball hero since I was a 9 year old in 1960, and the more I learned about him later, the more I admired him. Maybe the greatest hitter who ever lived, but his character, his integrity, and his service to his country in two wars makes him my hero. I've not seen his like since, but I keep hoping. I hope you are up there timing a Bob Feller fastball right now.

This is not just the best All-Star game. It's one of the most remarkable events in the history of baseball. Aside from Ted Williams' entrance and asides with players, there are a bunch of little moments that are priceless, including Reggie Jackson mouthing the words "Carl Yastrzemski" when Yaz is introduced, Jim Rice getting Willie Mays' autograph. Oh, yeah, then there was the game and Pedro racking up Ks. And who better to sing the National Anthem than Donna Summer? An all-around dream game.

Yeah the all star games were stacked in the late 90's and early 2000's. Every player with 20-25 hr, 50+ rbi, and a lot of them hit for contact so quite a bit had .300 and .310+ batting averages. Now you get praised for doing that in an entire season.

I was only 5 going on 6 when this happened. I wish I could remember it... I'll be dead for the 2000 all century team... If I was a player that season and didn't make this all star game I'd be really pissed at myself. For some players this could've been the greatest moment of their career.

Over nearly 145 years of professional baseball, no player was tougher to strike out than Hall of Fame shortstop Joe Sewell. In 7,132 career at-bats, Sewell heard the umpire say “Strike three” just 114 times. That’s one strikeout for every 63 at-bats, or once every 17 games, or in just .014 percent of his total times at the plate. Hall of Fame slugger Babe Ruth, whose power at the plate became synonymous with baseball during the time he and Sewell played, racked up nearly 12 times more punchouts in the big leagues. “I never had trouble seeing the ball,” said Sewell, who often claimed he could see the spiraling seams on a baseball. “That’s because I followed it in. Why, I could even see the ball leave my bat.” So it was more than a noteworthy occurrence when on May 13, 1923, Joe Sewell struck out twice in one game for the first time in his career. In truth, it was more like an historical aberration. As an American League star in the 1920s and 1930s, Sewell regularly faced some of the best hurlers the game had ever seen, including Hall of Fame names like Red Faber, Waite Hoyt, Walter Johnson, and Herb Pennock. In 96 matchups, Hall of Famer Lefty Grove - he of 2,266 career strikeouts - could never reach strike three on Sewell, prompting him to call the shortstop the toughest batter he ever faced. So with those impressive hurlers in mind, “Who was the first pitcher to strike out Joe Sewell twice in a game?” might make for one of the better trivia questions in baseball history. That’s because the answer is rookie Cy “Wally” Warmoth, who was making just his sixth career start when the Washington Senators traveled to Cleveland’s Dunn Field to face Sewell’s Indians. By May 1923, Warmoth did have a couple wins against the Yankees under his belt, but few could have predicted that he would be the first to send Sewell back to the dugout twice. Though there is little anecdotal evidence from the game, a New York Times box score shows the lefty Warmoth collecting four strikeouts that day, but also issuing nine walks and losing to Cleveland by a 5-2 score.

If Pete Rose had confessed to gambling in 1989 then he would have been suspended for a year or two and then welcomed back to the game with open arms. Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were suspended for a few years for working for casinos. He probably wouldn't have managed again but could have been a hitting coach. The fact was he was arrogant and thought he was above the law. Then he confessed in 2004 by writing a stupid book about it.

All those big, top-of-their-game, world-class ballplayers with the world at their feet, crowding around with their eyes popping out, like Little Leaguers looking for an autograph. That's because they know they just met the greatest hitter who ever lived.

DivineSimply I didn’t know that Babe Ruth was there, lol. Ted was an amazing hitter there’s no doubt about it, but Ruth and Gehrig are the top two on my list, if Gehrig didn’t get sick he could have padded his already insane career stats. Ruth is the greatest baseball player ever because of this, before he was the most dominant hitter of all time he was a beast of a pitcher. In 1916 he was 23-12 with a 1.75 ERA, 40 starts, 9 complete game shutouts and in 323.2 innings pitched he surrendered ZERO, yes ZERO home runs, that to me is an incredible ball player. I’m a Mets fan by the way, not a Yankee fan waxing poetic about my teams historical past.

I love every second of the all century team introduction. Seeing the smiles on those boys faces as they get cheered on for what might be some of their last time. Only thing that hurts me is Mickey and Joe D passed before the all century team was created.

Williams was as American as an American can get. Quite a fisherman in his elder years as well. That All Star Game Ceremony, with the old-timers and infamous steroid era players, is profound. Pitchers and catchers report next month! Let's play ball!
