As a lifelong Bucs fan couldn't stand that Leyland batted Bonds leadoff until 1990. Look at his stats, in 1988 he had 24 HR and only 58 RBI for a 2nd place team that could've used those extra possible 40-50 runs while chasing the Mets. When he wised up and put him in the 5-spot his RBI jumped to 114 and the Pirates started winning divisions.

Their second best hitter was andy van slyke , who in their right mind would put Bonilla and andy in the 3 and 4 hole when you’ve got a guy that can be counted on every year for 30 taters with 100 walks and 100 rbi ? Having him hit leadoff seems preferable to 5th unless you can do a better job explaining things than you did in your original comment

Let’s see he could run like the wind hit to all fields had the second nicest swing I ever saw (Griffey jr). Oh and he had 30 plus power as a skinny dog. He could effortlessly hit. He had the most god given natural baseball ability you or anyone you ever know got to see and that’s a fact. You can call him a mean prick. But you can’t doubt his ability

@@thereisnosuchthingasanativ904 Personally I would pick Griffey from the standpoint he had all the tools Bonds did (although maybe not quite as fast) but he was a MUCH better fielder and I prize defense over stealing bases. Griffey is the most talented position player to play in the last 50 years. Had Tony Gwynn kept the weight off and his stolen bases up (or sacrificed some of his average for power) he'd be up there with both of them too.

Bonds only added like 5-10 HR a year from his Pittsburg stats. He only had the one year with a huge HR total. He just consistently hit 35-50 HR a year his entire career. He probably added a total of 5-10 HR a year for the 15 years in SF. He wouldve ended up right around Willy Mays stats without the juice.

It was no secret that the only thing Barry Bonds wasn't good at was throwing his throwing armt was actually mediocre at best, fortunately he had Van Slyke in center and Bonilla in right, so he was just lucky to have been part of that dynamic with a gold. @thereisnosuchthingasanativ904 Жыл бұрын
I disagree he had a great swing. I thought it was pretty. Not sure where you see prettier swings besides Griffey? And even those where show off moon shot swings! Not level short to the ball swings. Barry was a waaaaayyyyy better hitter than Griffey and it wasn’t really close at all
@scottb3034 Жыл бұрын
@@thereisnosuchthingasanativ904 Was he though? Griffey would have had him in basically every hitting metric but raw average and OBP had he stayed healthy on the back half of his career. And even with his back half slide he finished like .010 batting pts off Bonds in average. Bonds also had the luxury of 2500 walks to inflate his OBP compared to 1300 for Griff and a .440 OBP vs .370. It at the very least is a LOT closer than you think. Especially if you take into account Bonds natural decline the last 6-7 years of his career had he remained natural his entire career.
