6:18 absolutely is a balk, look at his back foot during his delivery, it comes off the rubber and goes back on, a little hop. Plus, when you speed up your windup like that, it will be called a balk almost 99% of the time.

A few notes: 1) "He's walking away" is no protection against being thrown out. 2) Distance from the umpire is no protection against being thrown out. 3) Umpires are under no obligation to keep star players in a game. 4) No fan I know of ever came to a ballgame to watch the umpire. 5) If any major league umpire had the stones to call the strike zone as it's actually written in the rule book, half the league would get thrown out of games.

The greatest thing about baseball is the human element. Check swings, balls and strikes. Outs. That’s all judgement calls. There are zero rules that defines what a swing is. Balls and strikes are basically what level you’re playing at. If you get too tight with kids, it doesn’t fair well. Once you get into the pros you are allowed to squeeze to the exact strike zone we all know. Im learning that now with legion and teens. You have to throw a bone here and there. Or else you’ll be there forever

MLB should institute a rule that if an Ump is found on film to essentially "bait" a player into an ejection, that ump faces a 30 game suspension with no pay, and must apply for reinstatement to umpire with the MLB upon completion of the suspension. Said ump will then be allowed to umpire again, but more or less under a "parole period" where if they are caught baiting another player/manager, they are stripped of their duties in the MLB and reassigned to the MiLB for the next 2 years as punishment

22:22 Phelps’s ejection is exactly how I got thrown out of a game my senior year of high school. He breaks zero rules and asks a reasonable question. Not arguing about balls and strikes, he was asking if it missed in and by how much. Pitchers should absolutely be within their rights to do so without getting canned for it. That’s such horseshit.
@tomfoley67182 жыл бұрын
I think it’s a crock that you can’t argue balls and strikes I mean if it’s a bad call strike or ball and it’s so obvious well the inevitable gonna happen

As a catcher I have respect for you and Phelps on that but ya you're right that call was really bullshit and coming from a fan of the Dodgers I understand you're view on that
@michaelfalkner11862 жыл бұрын
That's another "blame the culture" thing -- umpires basically take even any question of ball or strike as a technical argument, and it can be an ejection at any time.
@IKnowImAnAsshole2 жыл бұрын
If you want to ask about location, you can bet your ass that if you march down from the mound to home plate to do it you'll be leaving before you get there. Zero problem answering if a pitcher asks me, 100% problem when you feel the need to march down to do it.
@sammenegat2 жыл бұрын
@@IKnowImAnAsshole I get what you’re saying, but I just don’t think it was a march. The way he came down was so passive. Pair that with the fact that the way he asked where the pitch was wasn’t breaking any rules in the MLB rule book, I just don’t think the umpire needs to have that quick of a trigger. It’s a big spot in the game and I don’t think what Phelps did warranted getting tossed that quickly, let alone at all. If he thought it was a strike, he can ask without arguing. That’s totally fair. If he kept going, then he’s crossing a line.

The announcer at the 23:20 mark hit the nail on the head. A manager or pitcher should be able to ask what was wrong with a pitch without being tossed from the game. There's no arguing, even if the ump is so blatantly wrong that a blind person could see it. And some umpires even believe that they are celebrities, and fans look forward to seeing them call a game. It's ridiculous. Replace them all. Let them call foul balls only. And maybe home runs. Maybe. Let's see how they do on the foul balls.
