Why is Shohei Ohtani able to achieve great records so easily, and to built big moments? "Shohei's top priority is to realize the team championship. He does not consider the achievement of his individual result as his primary goal". Shohei believes that the team's championship is more important than his own record and that the ultimate goal of playing baseball is for the team to win. This is why Shohei is able to stay calm and not get nervous even in the face with the opportunity to achieve great records, and as a result, he is able to achieve an amazing record with ease. This may be similar to what the Japanese often refer to as “the triumph of selflessness (MUYOKU no SHORI)” or “maintaining a normal usual mind anytime (HEIJYO SHIN)”. When we human being has a strong desire to accomplish something, our body tenses up and we cannot move as well as usual. You may feel, “I can usually do this, but only at important times when I really need to do it, for some reason my body tenses up and doesn't work as well as usual.” This is because the cognitive mechanism of the brain that controls our thoughts and awareness is also linked to the autonomic nervous system, which controls important functions in the body such as blood flow, hormones, and the respiratory system etc, which we are usually unconsciously and automatically working without realizing it. Cultural difference here. In Japan, striking out is disgraceful; they emphasize contact. In the US you can strike out 200 times but if you mash 40 you get paid. So guys kick their legs up and try to destroy baseballs. Ohtani's toe never leaves the ground because he's contact first. The power's already there. Comes with being 6'4, 210.

Mike Lowell is basically correct in his breakdown. Unfortunately, he’s wrong when he says the "back elbow never goes down" and "elbow up, perfectly fine" (min. 5). And it’s definitely NOT fine for little leaguers 12 and under. It will not help them hit better. The result will be a lot of pop ups. When players are older and stronger, and can control the bat, it’s OK to incorporate “elbow up" in their swing, if it’s a comfortable set-up for them. There is zero reason to teach/preach “back elbow up” to little kids. The stability of your base/legs and hand path determine your hitting consistency. The back elbow absolutely, always comes down when the front heel goes down. With every hitter. It’s right there in this slo-mo video. Same thing when he shows video Ortiz and Thome. Power hitters like to put the back elbow up to “pre-load”. The elbow has to come down for the proper hand path, as the weight shifts (transfers) to the front leg.
