so i made this , I extruded the outside contour as a solid and trimmed the top surface to it but than the whole part became a surface and not a solid, is that correct?

Mike once you have trimmed the created surface to the main part it will create surfaces. The next step is to create a solid from the surface. Select the solids tab and then From Surfaces. Window select the entire part and this will create your water tight solid. Thanks for the question.

Ok I got that part now how do you flip the part over and reverse engineer the bottom of the part and keep it all aligned to the top part?

Without going into too much detail, once you have both sides of your scan in your project you will need to have one of them a solid or mesh so you can use the alignment functions. Right click on the feature you want to align to transform it. Global reg with best fit selected is one way, N-Point align is another, but this would make a useful video follow-up!
