Battery life is actually pretty important and different enough to mention. Advertised run-times: Edge 540: 26 hours vs Bolt v2: 15 hours. DC-rainmaker found the Garmin's 26 hours was conservative - he got a bit more in his testing. If you are like me and keep the same computer for 6+ years, then the longer battery life means a much longer usable life span.
@mlegrand
@mlegrand Жыл бұрын
I still wish there was a way to switch out batteries after 2-3 years of usage. I hate the idea that people just start getting crap battery life when these lithium ion batteries give out.
@RomanKostyrko
@RomanKostyrko Жыл бұрын
It is not so important as many people think. In any case everyone rides with a phone and has to charge it. So if you ride 24+ you have a pitstop where you can quick charge devices or you have a powerbank. As for long term usage - battery can be replaced in service and it doesn't cost much money. So 15h runtime is enough to 99 percent riders. For example I ride marathons 300-400km once a year. For this cases I will take power bank. BTW I use 1030+, and it also keeps 24h+ But this is not so important for me.

Something else to consider with the Garmin you get a bunch of training metrics built right imto the device; training load, recovery, and daily suggested workouts that adapt based on current circumstances. With wahoo you have to subscribe to their system plan for $15/month. So after 5 months the Garmin is actually cheaper.
@mlegrand

The Wahoo System or Wahoo X doesn't feel at all like a requirement to me. Most of the people that I know who have Wahoo computers don't use it and are still very happy with their Wahoo devices. Those training metrics built into Garmin are fantastic but I don't think it makes Garmin cheaper or more affordable than Wahoo. Just my opinion. I’ve been using a combination of my Garmin Forerunner 255 and iPhone up until recently and today I went for my first ride with the Wahoo. I care! I still love my Bolt V1. As for GPS, in my experience between the Bolt (GPS with others in combination) and the Garmin Forerunner 245 (GPS combination with GLONASS or Galileo), Instinct 2 (GPS combination with GLONASS or Galileo), and smartphones (GPS + cell data), I'd say they're all pretty accurate on long straight lines such as you'd find in road or gravel riding. They're all terrible with MTB riding, especially on tight and twisty sections. The Bolt is more accurate in terms of distance though when you pair the device with a speed sensor. My phone was more accurate than the Bolt when relying on just GPS for mountain bike rides. It also seems like the Garmin devices will add some distance when you aren't moving anywhere depending on where you are at, almost as if the signal is kind of bouncing a bit and the device is adding that to your distance.

Great video Matt! I bought the Garmin Edge 540 over the Wahoo bolt purely for Garmin’s incident detection feature built into their computers. In my past experience, it has not been perfectly accurate-maybe 50% of the time, though I don’t crash often-but it was very useful every time it was accurate. Plus, even a 50% that it will accurately detect a crash is a comfort to my family so there’s that too. Apart from that feature I likely would have chosen the Bolt V2.

Hi, hoped for the best when switching from Garmin to Wahoo, but had to return the item: 1. Notifications from other apps are not working. Forget it for now, app broken since November 2022. 2. 'Take me to' navigation does not work, just wait spinner forever. Addresses are never found. 3. Have to load the Companion app before ride (unlike Garmin) and constantly watch if it was killed by Android. Otherwise device loses connection. No wonder it's getting killed by Android first - it takes a lot of RAM. 4. Companion App itself takes huge chunk of RAM (>500mb vs 24mb Garmin Connect). 5. Bolt v2 is an USB-C device with crippled USB-C implementation which cannot transfer data or charge from USB-C hosts. What a shame!!! Can only be charged from 30 years old USB-A port. Not chargeable using modern notebooks, powerbanks etc. Beware! No reviewer said about that. Are you guys using the devices you reviewing? All these issues confirmed by Wahoo support.

I was wondering how common the bug with the 'Take me to' navigation was on Android. This feature was great and hope it gets fixed. When I am out riding and want to change up my route I am left making temporary routes on the Strava app and then selecting them in Elemnt app. Not convenient at all. @ONjAXX is there a similar "take me to" feature on Garmin app. I can still select the location on the map on the Bolt head unit but not nearly as convenient as copying an address from Google maps and pasting it into the Elemnt app.

Really great comparison. I definitely prefer a layout of the Bolt. And I have a question about maps. Do you know by any chance, which one is easier to navigate on the go? Without any preparation before the ride. Let's say you are somewhere, you want to select something on the map which is not included in the original route and cycle there, without touching your phone. Thanks🙏

Hi Matt! I wonder how many functions in the wahoo bolt 2 are connected to the paid wahoo app? because if you have to have the wahoo app to see the power, navigation... I don't think of taking the bolt 2. I guess the training plans in the wahoo and garmin app are not good enough for actual trainings. Otherwise, I intend to buy a cycling computer for serious training (road cycling) and I can't decide between edge 540 and bolt 2. What is your opinion?

Accurate data provision would be expected from a 400 EUR bike computer. I have no comparison with Garmin, but GPS on my Bolt v2 sucks. It is good enough for road cycling, when it is clear where the crossroads are, but for the slow gravel cycling in some hilly terrain, often under forest canopy, it is so inaccurate I am often unsure if I should turn right now, or does the path I am closing to leads to some private property. A side effect of GPS inaccuracy are spectacular max speeds on Strava activities. According to Bolt I somehow reached 79 khp on my gravel with 36 mm tires.

One thing I have found useful is riding vocal cues with Garmin. I can ride with on apple earbud in and it announces the turns so if I am not staring at the device I know exactly where and when to turn. Wahoo has no such thing, and the preview it does list goes away after a few seconds and I have missed it if I wasn't looking. So Garmin from mapping seems to be better at cues when following a set of instructions. I also don't understand why Wahoo has no street names on their mapping, it's basically just a line. Garmin always has prompts of the street name coming up at the top whether you are following a route or not, which is very helpful when you have no idea where you are going and need reference points.

@@AndrewTSq - I will say that the menu and layout of the 1030+ and 1040 is very similar. So . . . . Garmin doesn't seem interested in fixing that.

If you are using a Garmin 955 watch (or any garmin watch at that) will using the Wahoo still be a viable option or would you stick to the garmin ecosystem?! Amazing video! (As always)

I don’t hesitate to recommend mixing and matching between devices. There are a few features where having the same brand helps. There’s a triathlon hand off feature between Garmin devices. There’s also the acute load metrics and all the health metrics that sync between Garmin devices. But personally, I mix and match and don’t have any issues with it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

I had Garmin 530 and got rid of it because of it is not navigation. Navigation (for me) means that if I go of the route (or planned route, if you wish) it will find a new good way to get back on the track and to the finish. And that is exactly what the Garmin is not capable of. Wahoo rules the navigation. It will not say Make a U Turn! I t will always find a new way, where it is possible. You can then choose by yourself if you will go the new way or will make a UTurn. Garmin is not a smart navigation. And the buttons on the sides are also pain to use. Wahoo is also much more easier to setup - it is done by companion app in your smartphone - not in the deepest levels menus by buttons on the device. Also, when you want to get somewhere, you just use Get me to... in app. Then you hit the start button on device and you go. My life is so smooth from the point when I manage to sell Garmin 530 and bougt the Wahoo Bolt2. I highly recommend it.

I am a huge fan of the Bolt v2 and I've heard from a lot of people that agree with you about the Garmin navigation. It'd be nice if it was configurable to avoid U turns like that. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

Had my Bolt v2 for nearly 2 years, and trading it in for Garmin 840. Tried everything and the software won't upgrade, and the battery life has diminished. Also, rides on my Bolt won't show up in my Garmin app (I use a Garmin watch) unless I manually download and upload the .fit file.

Garmin comes with a sensor set. speed and cadence. is that also work with Wahoo? or does wahoo need that?
@mlegrand
@mlegrand Жыл бұрын
These sensors are compatible with other brands. Typically I don’t need the sensors personally. The GPS gives speed details and my power meter sends cadence data. But these can be useful to have. Keep me posted on what you end up doing and how you like it. 👌

I just purchased wahoo elemet and must say i dont like it. Screen is so small and very dim dark. I have a really trouble to read the display. On the bike i have standard sunglasses and then is just dark screen. I have tried in the settings bud there is no brightness control. There is auto on and off. For this price is is very not reasonable to build such a thing.

Hi Sascha, Is it too late to return it? Does the screen seem dark when outside biking or is this an indoor cycling issue? I hope that you can find a way to get a cycling computer that works a bit better for you.

After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. kzbin.infoUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.

Hi Matt. Thanks for this review as after much deliberation over the various pros and cons of all the devices out there I finally took the plunge and bought a Wahoo Bolt V2. Looking forward to it arriving and more importantly getting out on the bike to use it. For me it came down to price and matching up what my needs were; tracking my rides and the occasional navigating on new routes. But I am looking forward to the features on this newer device to my Garmin 520 plus, in particular the climb feature (well done Wahoo for catching up). If my riding opportunities start matching my ambitions (family commitments keep me on 2/3 short rides per week) then I will look to upgrade to a larger device. Hopefully Karoo release their version 3 as I think this could end up being a cracker. Once again thanks and keep on producing the great content.
