So I have a theory on what happened. Clearly this takes place after Twilight builds her school, but before she takes the throne completely. So my theory is this: Spike had always felt small and useless after Twilight became a princess. After Celestia and Luna announced their imminent retirement, Spike felt even smaller than usual. Twilight barely had time to spend with just him anymore. She was always so busy trying to prove how ready she was to take the throne that she seemed to forget her oldest friend. One day, Spike just couldn't take it anymore. He flew to Canterlot on his own and confronted Celestia, Luna, and Cadence. The three princesses who had stolen Twilight from him and made him feel small and useless. He started demanding that they revoke Twilight's royal status so that she could never become princess. His demand was refused. That night, Celestia teleported a scroll to Twilight, explaining what Spike was doing. Twilight was devastated. She knew Spike well enough to know that if he were allowed to continue, he would destroy all of Equestria. She gathered her allies together and they began to formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Spike is still making demands of the princesses. This is where the animatic starts. After the animatic, Twilight and her allies storm Canterlot. Spike has grown into a monster, hungry for Twilight's attention. He gets it, but not in the way he imagined. After a hard battle, in which many guards fell, Twilight and her friends had no choice. They harnessed the power of the Elements of Harmony. Spike was reverted to his normal size and banished under the earth. From there, Twilight assumed the throne with her council of friendship. She never had a friendship ambassador. But beware, young ponies. One day, when the ground quakes and lava spews from the volcanoes, Spike will return. He will be back, more power-hungry and attention seeking than ever. Only one pony can stop him. Will she be able to do what is necessary to save her people? Only time will tell.
