Here is the really weird thing: I can see Spike in this role. His best episodes and even some of his bad ones have him learning these lessons, even the gauntlet of fire had him take up a cause not for himself but for others protection and then when he saw that somebody else could take up the role he was willing to advocate the power he had gained to another because he knew that they would be able to take on the role for him.

Clayton Johnson well to start there is dragon quest, essentially he avoids falling into the soldiers shadow "the sadist" through no interference from the girls, he resist the call from the other dragons to harm something merely to cause it pain. The Crystal Empire part one and two have him giving support to twilight and even ultimately taking the Crystal heart to the others. The gauntlet of fire I already mentioned. But I noticed a lot of his episodes seem to focus on him taking on aspects of a leader or in this case a warrior.
@leohino92116 жыл бұрын

Clayton Johnson well that's also another strength of the warrior that was highlighted in this video. Spike will heed the call and be a hero but when it's over he doesn't try to continue trying to find more and more glory he's content. I mean he earned the right to be the dragon lord, he could've been king of the dragons and they would have followed him, but he is happy with his lot in life so even though he's treated as the punching bag of the universe in most episodes he's happy with what he has.

One archetype that I do want to see him cover is that of the king. I think it will be difficult for Silver as the king specifically is about denying freedom of choice. The king is the one who takes freedom away from those that aren't responsible and unites previously free but aimless people into a common goal. It's very needed as without it we couldn't ever have advanced beyond what was possible on our own. Also the king does generate stability that allows those not directly under him to explore new things in safety but the king does take away the individual potential of his subject for the common good. I actually think in modern media the king is even more underrepresented than the warrior. One who is put in a positive light by guiding others away from their individual goal to a more important common goal?

this is why cartoons from the 80's where so GOOD. they had action, fights. but it was always about making the right thing, to protect others, prevent something worst, and never becoming what they fought against, even try make the enemy realize of what they are doing allowing them an option a chance to change (granted almost they never did). Some of the best examples are: Saint Seiya, Transformers, Spider-man, Sailor Moon, DragonBall & Dragon Ball Z and so many others (mainly Anime) Characters that fought, grew, died, and always did it for the right cause, not just for pride or the thrill of the fight
@rainpooper70886 жыл бұрын
Zoe Lycan Anime has always been more action oriented than western shows and it is to this day. That’s because Anime doesn’t really care much about the age of its target group and just goes for the things it wants to do while western cartoons always have to be „appropriate“ for the kids. Also, notice how those shows you listed are mainly adaptations of something that already existed, like how Spiderman had its comics, Transformers had its toys, the Anime had their Manga, etc. That‘s because it was pretty hard to get something original off the ground(that wasn‘t just to sell toys and other merch) that wasn’t all moral guardian with a „valuable lesson“ at the end back in the day. It’s just that those shows aren’t remembered as much as the good ones are. I think that the action in western animation is very lacking in this day and age though. Even shows that claim to be action(usually action/comedy) have little to no action in them and when they do, it feels more like they want to get it over with and go back to telling stupid jokes than the characters actually believing in what they’re fighting for. Maybe we could take the action attitude of the 80s, but leave the moral attitudes behind?

The fact I main tanks in Overwatch makes this video more meaning full. The roll of a tank is to make space and protect his team. And sometime the best way is to charge in and attack head on. Keyword being SOMETIME. Knowing when to do that and when to just hold a point or fall back is impotent. You play too passively and you will never take any ground. You play too aggressively and you get every one kill. Some of this shows in Reinhardt's character. Like when he was young and arrogant, he left his team for dead to get as many kills as he could. And it lead to him nearly dying, if not for the help of anther tank. But it cost that other tank everything. They were force to peal back to a hold able position. And in the end it end with a final stand by the dying mentor so the enlighten student could right his wrongs. The final stand has full of glory but that did not matter. All that did was getting the solders out who were still alive, so they could try again anther day.
@MrMarinus186 жыл бұрын
But effective combat also relies on the magician who can launch powerful attacks while protected by the warrior, the lover who keeps everyone together through hard times and the king who focuses their efforts and understands when to launch an attack.
@generalzeta70006 жыл бұрын
True. But my post was just on the roll of the Warrior in combat and how it mirrors his character. The other rolls are just as vital. But if there is no king, then it often that the warrior will take up that mantle as well, as they also tend to have a front row seat to what happening, but that can also make them blind to whats going one behind.

Also when I was playing Star Wars battlefront piloting The solo millennium falcon I learned how to avoid being a target and protecting my teammates. With balance and harmony at my side the warrior spirit of mine grows with an awesome power playing both overwatch and Star Wars battlefront. And I will admit the animated short is more awesome than the others, even the new one that came out the shooting star.

A warrior ends the violence in a way growth can happen after. The bully ends enough violence to ensure it happens only on their terms. The masochist and soldier cannot end the violence but fights anyway out if a sense of duty or obligation. The destroyer and sadist ends the violence with as much violence as possible. We need more warriors.

I’m a little surprised that you didn’t even make mention of Pharynx. We could see from the beginning that his heart was with the safety of his people, even if his attitude was misguided. He inspired the other Changelings to fight off that mole monster, non-violently at that, and after he realized the value of true kinship, he transformed without changing who he was- still the rough and tough big brother willing to get between his kin and anything that’d do them harm. Yeah, he might still have some growing to do, but the whole time I’m watching him, I was thinking, “Yep. This is gonna be the Warrior of the series that Silver Quill talks about”. I now see that the fact that he’s only made one appearance thus far makes that statement silly, but I’m still surprised that you didn’t even mention him!

I think the best modern depiction of The Warrior is Captain America in the Marvel Movies. He's honorable, fully dedicated to saving lives no matter the personal cost, staunch in his beliefs, and despite his name, Captain America is loyal to the PEOPLE, not the government.
@jennpenn106 жыл бұрын
I had a whole rant i could go on about this comment, but i decided to change my response. I was quite angry before at the Captain because he abandoned everything for the sake of one friend, but when i think of it like that he truly is the best depiction of a warrior. That doesn't mean i will start liking him though. XD (actually now that i think about it, i only hated him in civil war and not ANY of the other movies so i agree)
@valiant5456 жыл бұрын
That is PRECISELY what he is! However, that is why he is Captain AMERICA not Captain FEDERAL. America is by the people, for the people. So is the government, at least when it works. And that is precisely what he took his oath to as a soldier, to the American people, and to the constitution.
@MrMarinus186 жыл бұрын
The warrior is defined by his selflessness. I disagree with Silver Quill in that working hard for a test is channeling the warrior as doing that is for the benefit of yourself. Channeling the warrior means doing something that doesn't directly grand you anything but is for the greater cause you're loyal to. THe 4 male archetypes are defined by that rank. The king focuses on those below him, the lover on those equal to him and the warrior on those above him. The magician is the one who falls outside the hierarchy for whatever reason. I think Captain America forsaking the common good for the sake of a friend is him kind of abandoning the warrior for the sake of the lover. In it's purest form the warrior is actually one who can fight against the people. For the sake of peace and prosperity it is sometimes needed to forcefully suppress the will of the people. The warrior is the one who can let go of his morality to do things that might be unpleasant but need to be done.

I would like to see the philosophy of the "support" classes in games. I am a Zenyatta main, not just because I enjoy his gameplay, but also because of his lore and influence on others like Genji. I am rusty on my Overwatch lore so bare with me. Zenyatta is technically in his 20s, while still wise, we can only imagine the pain and sorrow he felt with Tekhartha's assassination. What's not to say that he wanted to take his own life, blamed himself for his death, or was willing to abandon everything he knew and take revenge? I want a cinematic that highlights this and maybe we will. What we do know is this, Zenyatta remembered his time with Tekhartha and continued his path on traveling the world helping others in need. Eventually, he met Genji in his travels and felt the need to help him. I like to think that one reason he helped Genji out was because he saw a little bit of himself on him. Genji was at his lowest during this time and Zenyatta knew how it felt when no one was around to help, so the omnic monk took it upon himself to release Genji of his burden and accept himself as he truly is, a man.

While I may come off as aloof quiet or shy I can "come to life" in seconds once I feel like my friends are hurting or about to be hurt wether its cracking a few jokes to lift a really heavy mood and get some laughs or just giving advice and being something solid people can rely on for support. Like one friend had a crush on a person I could see he had no chance with so first I tried to guide him away from her. And when she told him the bitter truth I knew I basically knew it wasn't the time for jokes it was time for comfort so I comforted him and basically gave him a shove in the right direction. Yay! Silver Quill is back and I really need to catch up on MLP because I’m really behind 😀😅 And also I agree what your saying Silver Quill, violence is used as either revenge, hate or wanting to kill. Violence is only seen now in days as something stupid or just for the fun of it. But if your fighting for what’s right then that’s how I see violence. For example, Batman is someone I’ve watched back then and I understand what he was doing because each day he would save people such as the Joker, I didn’t even know who the Joker was till I saw Batman help him. Even though Batman fights in the shadows he’s still someone I can look up to. And what I normally see in violence is someone doing something right or making a change in life or protecting those from danger. 😀❤️👍

I am looking forward to when you're going to do the King who is also increasingly rare. MLP doesn't really have a king character. Your use of Fancy Pants is indeed accurate and he represents the King but he just doesn't have enough screentime to use him as an example. Many shows seem reluctant to put a strong domineering leader character in a positive light. MLP actually stood out to me for how positive it portrayed Celestia with her hard work, dedication and love for her people. Showing dominant male leaders in a positive light is incredibly rare.

Mmm... Fascinating. I've never played Overwatch. However hearing this character information has definitely peeked my interest for the series. It certainly gave me a few things to consider regarding the Warrior archetype. Thank you very much Professor Silver Quill!^w^

This really speaks to me on a personal level, when I was young I wanted to be a hero, being admired by those who look up to me, but whenever something happened I would usually channel the bully or even the coward. If it wasn’t for movies like Spider-Man and Disney’s Hercules I would still be like that, now I myself am not a fighter the word hero use to be a term for people who do great things being a soldier or an astronaut, I wanted to be a hero for those not for the fame but for the feeling, but then I started regretting myself for making not so good choices. After watching this video I think it’s time for this would be hero to become a warrior.

Silver, maybe try doing a after the fact on the arrowverse. Because I think in those shows (most of the time) it shows the characters not being violent for the sake of violence. In an early episode of arrow a man who is an arsonist isn’t beat up by are hero but, gets talked to. Flash offers to try and help the criminals often to his dismay. I think in those instances there is a health hero arcatype. I know we might never get a after the fact: arrowverse but, that’s what I thought of during this video.

Great video as always Silver. These archetype videos are some of your best ;) Although, I can’t help but think a darker interpretation of what Ocellus says at the beginning is that this Yickslur was such a terrifying “YAK SMASH!” warrior that when he went into battle the opposing side just surrendered right away rather than try and fight him. So, he technically ended things peacefully...
@MLPSilverQuill6 жыл бұрын
That's true. He might have been so powerful that most gave up the fight before it started. Yet with that comes the idea that this Yikslur fellow accepted that they'd given up. He didn't have anything to prove by forcing the battle to continue. I think that's where the "honorable" part of his description comes into play.

Hey Silver Quill, I have some info that maybe you could use in a future video. If you ever discuss the Major Arcana that is. In terms of the Death Major Arcana, it's core meaning whether or not the card is given to reversed or upright, is change. Despite the massive stigma surrounding this card and its namesake, the Death arcana is arguably the most positive card. I can think of one video game character who represents this card in both the reverse meaning and the upright meaning. In tarot reading, which is where these meanings for each Arcana comes from, neither meaning is a bad thing. The reverse is meant to help you understand and recognize a problem that's holding you back in life. The reverse meaning for the Death arcana essentially is the resistance of change. You might be worried about the results of letting go of something, or you may be uncertain about the changes you need to move forward in your life. This can limit your future and make you feel as though you're stuck in limbo. This doesn't mean you're trapped forever though, rather the reverse meaning of the Death arcana card is telling you to assess the ways you're approaching all the changes in your life. Perhaps you are afraid of them and this halting the change due to those fears. It's ok to be afraid, but the reverse meaning is there to remind you that you cannot let your fears stop you. You need to have faith in yourself and the choices you're making in order to better yourself and your life in the future. The Death card when upright has multiple meaning. It signals that a major event in your life is ending. A cycle ends and another is about to begin. You need to close one door to open the new one before you now. In other words, put your past behind you and focus your energy on the days ahead. This card also informs you of a transitional period that you're going to experience. The old version of you has to 'die' if the new you is to flourish in this next stage of your life. This may be a scary event, and understandably so. You can still be afraid, that is always ok. But you mustn't let fear stop you from welcoming the coming change. The last meaning of the card when upright represents unhealthy attachments in your life. You must learn to keep moving forward and let go of these attachments as time goes on. These attachments won't help you in the future, they'll instead hold you back from it. They must be let go in order to progress and move on. There's the meanings of both sides of the Death arcana card for you. Now back to what i said earlier. I know a video game character who I believe embodies both meanings throughout their game and their life in the canon lore outside the games. Death from the Darksiders franchise. Perhaps you could discuss this arcana card and the characters you think represent it best Silver Quill. Look forward to more in the future.

Love your videos. Will say this. I spent 15 years in the infantry, and I can say that there are many points that you got close. I say close, because it seems to be more of an outsiders view of the warrior, and the motivations of the warrior. You see, when he makes the statement, "I've been called, I will answer every time I am called." This statement, is one that is honestly hard to explain to someone that has never answered the call. In trying to find the words for someone else, I finally found at least my own way of explaining the commitment of the soldier. Not all soldiers, mainly the ones that go back into it and have become the soldier instead of just lived as one. It starts with this understanding. A soldier doesn't write a check, as has been said in many cases, to the country to spend how it will. A soldier knows just how easy it is to die. Especially one that has been deployed anywhere. So, writing that check is kind of downplaying what a soldier does. He in essence, gives the country their time of death. It is an understanding, that the soldier knows his life is there to be used, and in too many cases, used up. And we just hope that when our time comes, we will be used for something of worth. That our lives will be spent doing something that is beneficial to someone. On the adverse, a soldier also gives his oath. In the case of us here in the US, we give our oath to protect the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. And not a single one of us has ever been released from that oath. We may have a little of the Don Quixote syndrome in us, but if you ever ask a vet about this, they will look at you with a hunger in their eyes and tell you this. They are just waiting for the word. And we are. Because you see, that is the driving force of the warrior. We know that we are not the great heroes that stand against the coming storm, alone, with sword unsheathed. We instead see ourselves as a stalwart wall, waiting for the chance to stand up and be able to do our duty. We pray for the chance to have our lives have worth again, and you honestly can't find that kind of worth being a greeter at Walmart... We hope and pray that we will never be called to action, but we also long for it. And yes. It is likely that at that time, he was not thinking much, but in the event of those that HAVE been in those situations and actually lived, (they usually have medals and won't talk much about what you are asking, mind you,) they will usually say "Just wondering if my guys made it out OK." Edit: Oh. As for your question about not seeing the Warrior portrayed anymore, I will say this. When you have a society that is trying it's hardest to destroy what it means to be masculine, and to stand up for something, you will see a decline in things that show the masculine in a positive light. Look at how popular it is to try and speak about "toxic masculinity." Yes, you can have men that are toxic. But when you try and take away from the roles that men have had that got us to this point, and instead of glorifying the feminine AND the Masculine, you have movements that are trying to say that those things are contrived societal aspects.

Hey, Silver-Quill actually pointed your comment out to me. I'm enlisting in the Army as soon as I get a waiver, and I found your comment to be extremely eye opening in terms of helping me differentiate between what I think, and what I know. I'm just a kid fresh out of high school, but I'd be honored if I could ask you a few questions about the service, what to expect, and building a good "warrior mentality." Its hard to approach any topic about the Army with my friends already in, especially about anything deeper than "82nd all the way!" or "Death from above!" or the day to day shenanigans and total BS of the life of an infantryman. God bless, and thank you for your service.

Would be happy to talk to you some time. There are many things that a person that is looking to go in would benefit from knowing, that a recruiter will not tell you, and your friends may not even think about. Not saying they are not smart and can't tell you some good things, but the truth is that while you are in, you will not be able to look at military life objectively. I will say this though. Even what I can tell you, will not give you a full picture of Military Life. I am only one man, and the military spans generations and continents. I can give you an outline of military life, and some anecdotes, but that may not give you a full picture that you would experience. Every soldier experiences it differently.

Listening to you I think Silver hit the nail on the head when he said that the warrior feels nothing when fighting. They are fighting not because they want to but because they feel like they have to. If anything the entire concept of the warrior is build on the idea of motive and not action. It's the idea of doing what you're normally unable to do for the sake of a cause greater than yourself. (I hope it doesn't appear as if I'm lecturing you because that's not my intention. I'm trying to further my understanding and also add to what you have said.) On that last part from what I understand though Silver believes in the 8 archetypes he also views their splitting based on gender outdated. That all people can channel all 8 and he even directly stated that desiring to prove your masculinity is a sign of immaturity.

Johnathan Jarrett I understand. Everyone’s experience will be different, but it’s something so foreign for someone on the outside looking in. I think my biggest question would be what the transition is like? Also, what life is like with your squad mates? I’m not the most extroverted guy, and the picture painted by my couple of friends in is that I’m going to have trouble making friends with the other guys if I don’t come out of my shell. I know it’s a stupid question to ask, but it’s something that’s a little hard to really dissect with your friends.

Well Marinus, actually, a soldier does feel many things while they are fighting. Fear, anger, loss, even euphoria. The thing is though, we usually go through a LOT of training. If we aren't working on something, or cleaning and repairing our equipment, we are training on how to do our jobs. We do what is called "Hip Pocket Training." We usually have a small notebook or something with a set of things that our first line supervisors want us to work on. Because of this training, when we are in a position where we are in a combat situation, we can fall back on that training so we can get things done. But where you see a difference in things, is not in feeling, but in what you are thinking. You feel a wide range of emotions. However, one of the ways to combat the rush, is to focus on one thing for thought. On the adverse, when a soldier gets deployed, or anything like, we do something which I call "becoming the animal." We kind of talk ourselves out of needing modern conveniences that we have become dependent on in a modern world. Sure, we complain about not having clean clothes, or having a shower for week or more, or there being sand and dust in our food, or even that the food we have is something that would gag a maggot. However we still go on without any real need of those things. At least not till we come back to a FOB, or Post. Altis. The transition really happens in Basic. You are broken down to the lowest you can be, and your only means of surviving is within the group. Everyone is "punished" when someone does something wrong. Even if no-one does anything wrong, the DS will SAY that someone did something wrong, and then you are punished as a group. Of course everyone also blames everyone else, but this is also normal in the beginning. After some time, you guys will realize that it is an "us against them" type of situation, and you will start to bond. Some will have a harder time then others. To be honest, it isn't those that are more loners that will be worse off, but those that are either the most sociable, and those that think they are "bad ass." The most sociable ones, won't know what it means to be isolated, and so they will have to learn it. The "bad asses" will learn quick, fast, and in a hurry that they are nowhere near as "bad ass" as they thought they were. If I had a dollar for each time I heard someone say something like "I would beat up a DS if they get in my face!" And then I saw that exact thing happen and those were the ones that cringed and squeaked "Yes Drill Sergeant! No Drill Sergeant!" After you get out of basic, you will be sent to your first training station for non-combat arms, and your first duty station if you are Combat Arms (as combat arms you go through what is called OSUT which is One Station Unit Training which means that you will do basic and Advanced Individual Training which is learning the basics of your job.) When you go to your first duty station, you will be assigned to a small group, which is part of a bigger group. You will then start really learning your job, and also start getting close to the men and women that are assigned to the group you are in. They will at first raz you, and tell you to do stupid things that are meant to both show you that you are the new guy, and help you to be part of the group. If you see through those things, don't worry. All you are doing is showing that you are at least somewhat smart, and it brings it's own acceptance. In the end though, the only way to get acceptance in the military, especially in a combat arms group, is to listen to those that have been in longer then you, do your job to the best of your ability, learn from your mistakes, watch what your squad mates and team mates are doing, and not screw up badly. And I can guarantee that the best way to not screw up badly is to follow directions. And one thing that will destroy any good will you have built up, is to lie. These guys need to know that you will be someone they can trust to be at their back when (not if) the shit hits the fan. Oh. One bit of advice. If something DOES happen, unless it is illegal, you never saw anything. You were too busy doing something else. That is another way to watch someones back in the ARMY. Though that is only for things that aren't illegal. If someone does something illegal, and you are questioned, you had better answer truthfully. And ALWAYS follow the chain of command. You have it for a reason. If you have a problem, then go to your team leader. If he can't help you, then you go to your squad leader. And so on. Do not jump the chain of command.
