Are you dumb, The MLS and USL are two different leagues, USL wants to adapt a relegation system but the MLS doesn't, Messi plays in the MLS for the Eastern Conference side, Inter Miami. Which is currently 15th place, Also known as bottom table. Since the MLS doesn't have a relegation system then there is no way Inter Miami gets relegated. Messi should be able to carry his team to mid table to make the mls playoffs. Although I do think next season Inter Miami will not be first. The mls is not a farmers league. I think they will be around 6-4 place in the league as having a good striker can only get you so far. Hope this helped as an avid MLS viewer myself. Cheers!

An observation from the UK. There is huge interest in promotion and relegation, it is the defining aspect of every season. This is because every club in the country can aspire to great things. My local club plays at the eight level of English football, but there is a clear path to the top, and some clubs have achieved incredible things, literally going from local leagues to level 3 (Accrington, Newport, Wimbledon for example). Teams going the other way have made last season's level 5 the most exciting ever (witness the drama of Wrexham vs Notts County). The most incredible excitement is generated, leading to massive end of season crowds. If you get relegated you just build again and try to get back. I would have thought that sort of ethic would appeal to America, rather than the rich kid being protected from his own incompetence - the current ethic.

Exactly, isn't the US all about meritocracy? Really, the issue is money though. Fans wood love relegation and promotions. Much more exciting, and the teams always have something to fight for, it's the club owners that don't want it.

@@JFP1988 It is on paper, but really it's a cartel system. The top clubs in the MLS will eventually form something like the prem top 6 and the rest will just be making up the numbers, surviving on the lower end. Same system in Ice hockey around the world, the top teams stay top and the lower teams are just in it trying to break even and survive.

Sounds like telling your kids about "Santa Claus". Pro-Rel is just what you are used to. We don't need it in our league/country, nor do we want it. We have Playoffs! Plenty to get excited about. Like in Baseball, our lower-level Soccer leagues can exist as "Minor Leagues," its fine. Also consider, we have 100,000 crowds at many of our College Football games, about 50 teams average 50,000+ attendance.

@@RecklessBikesTV LOL, here we go again with that word... "cartel".... Oooo. MLS and the Major League system is just how normal Sports leagues operate, been that way for 140 years (MLB). And unlike in Soccer, there is no FIFA-"cartel" in our sports leagues in the U.S. deciding what our teams can and can not do. The best thing about promotion and relegation is that it helps teams grow an organic fan base ...when a group of people from a town decide to form a team enter the league and progress to the tops it grows such a passionate fan base since the team has the DNA of the town/region embedded into it, it's struggles and everything...this is quite different from businessmen in New York for example saying San Diego has no football team ,let's make one....

But MLS currently makes most of its money on expansion fees. If they do true pro/rel, then you could make it to MLS by winning USL, and not paying 500 million dollars. The only way it happens if after MLS expands to 40 teams. Then you could split into 2 20 team leagues, and no team can fall further than the second division.

@@halorc56not really. Given the structure of ownership and marketing in the MLS compared to Europe, the league has way more relative parity than any other domestic league. Even if more star players like Messi join, it's not like they will form a super team like real Madrid in a big market. Pretty much every city has an equal team and every fan base will have hope. If u start a relegation system, u r encouraging super teams and discouraging parity. Though I do like pro/rel, the side effects are that it usually causes only a few large teams to be able to compete. Bringing it to the MLS would destroy the values of the clubs, make the smaller markets worse, and thereby decrease fans for a growing market. Because the sport is still growing here, no one really has connections to these clubs, and if their local team is bad they won’t be interested or will just band wagon

Agree 100%. As much as I enjoy pro/rel from a fan perspective, a closed system is just more financially viable. It's one of the reasons the American sports leagues are more valuable than football/soccer leagues (including the EPL), despite having smaller fan bases. For example, Michael Jordan recently made 10X on the sale of his majority stake into one of the worst franchises in the NBA (Charlotte Hornets) after 13 years. Meanwhile, football giants like Barcelona are drowning in debt.

In the european side, the money trickles down to the grassroots, and there are many national based talent schools where the youth meet from across the country, in off season tournaments, that is held by the national football association. The mls would just start poaching players, it's how all the european elite leagues and teams remain at the top, players won't have the incentive to stay without being paid to do so especially since many are taking high financial risks to play football and the end goal ideally is europe anyways which mls clubs have much more established links to European clubs, the usl would also need to start building connections with many of the big "development" clubs in europe to make staying seem worthwhile and since European clubs like the money the mls often brings in pre-season tours they'd immediately favor the mutually beneficial agreement unless proven otherwise

I find it weird that no one notices that the MLS already has a format similar to the relegation/promotion system, and that's the playoffs. The top 7 + 1 QR winner from each conference go on to play in a single elimination tournament while those that didn't qualify just sit it out. It's not traditional relegation/promotion but it does keep out the low performing teams from competing for the biggest prize in their league

Playoffs doesn’t have anything to do with the drama and excitement of your team being in a relegation battle or achieving promotion after not being able to get to the top division previously. Playoffs are the standard for American sports and they’re good but they don’t measure up to pro/rel. It really adds so much more to the sport and to supporting a team that may not be very good because it punishes you for not being consistent. Every game there is something to play for, whereas in the USL Championship right now Las Vegas Lights is way at the bottom of the west and won’t be making it into the playoffs this season (unless a miracle happens). Hopefully pro/rel happens 🙏

There's tailgating, fight songs, band marches, football backyard BBQs, secret superstitions, costumes, signs, etc. Hell in colleges, PARENTS of the athletes, and even the students who aren't even players get into fights and riots outside stadium grounds. There's literally an ad-campaign by the Big-10 in college football that says "Born to be ______ alum." Baseball is the same deal, and baseball has been in America longer than ANY of the five major European leagues or any of their teams have been established. You go to a Giants-Dodgers game or a Cubs game and you'll know how much passion we have for sports. I had a neighbor who partied for 3 STRAIGHT DAYS after the Cubs won their first World Series in a 108 years. As a Bay-Area native, I was essentially destined to become a fan of the 49ers, Giants, A's, and Warriors, and hate any team in Southern California. In hockey, all I'll say is go to a Red Wings game. American sports need more consequences for placing dead last in a league table, like relegation for example It also makes incredible chances for teams to prove themselves, even if a team is a few leagues down, they can win promotion and make the fans proud, even barely avoiding relegation has been massive for some teams and creates incredible moments

Relegation is not only the major difference. It's about heritage. Most European, Asian, African, and South/North American teams are stories and build around culture and cities. Take Spain for example, you have teams that represent identity - Barcelona (Catalan); Real Madrid (Madrista); Real Betis (Andulusian); Athletico Bilbao (Basque Country).

Relegation belongs in all pro sports. If your team sucks you shouldn’t be allowed to just throw the season for a better draft pick. Basically giving up because you think you can’t win it all is so shameful and any coach or player who does that doesn’t deserve to ever be a winner.

More likely for Americans, there’s a mind bending amount of money to be generated from this. In England, of the 3 promoted teams, the top 2 (from the lower league) get automatic promotion, the next 4 enter a 4 team mini tournament. The 5 games in that mini tournament generates over half a bullion US dollars in just 10 days with the winner recieving $200mill prize money.

I have never understood relegation from a business and owners POV. So the NY Mets have the worst record in baseball. Then the next year they are a AAA team with a $100M budget and playing games in Rochester and Hershey? Meanwhile a team in Lincoln, Nebraska will be hosting the Yankees on ESPN? Makes absolutely no sense financially.

The problem is MLS owners would never open themselves to relegation where USL are already second tier so why not but still up in the air if they’d want to. But the problems are how the MLS and U.S. soccer is set up in every way. Salary caps and ‘superstar’ player caps is beyond ridiculous

I think that the lack of promotion/relegation leads to complacency in the American leagues. It’s why you see such stupid things as tanking or whatever the baseball’s A’s are doing… In Europe, with relegation, teams always try their absolute hardest and it can create some wonderful stories

What I think could work in the MLS is just some of of Champions league system. Divide the league into the conferences by region, where you have relegations. Then the top teams in each conference earn a place in a cup completion similar to the champions league that unites the different conferences into one.

USL should let any team join at the bottom rung. When that gets too big, add another league, or split into two geographically replicating the English pyramid. Allowing tiny teams from villages to dream of reaching the top division. It creates a system that naturally fills up with teams for every available spot in the ecosystem, swamping the MLS.

I’m from Chicago, but my local team is Union Omaha which plays in USL League 1, they even ranked 1st of 12 in it last year and made it to the semifinals. If USL becomes the relegation/promotion version of the MLS I believe that it would result in a massive surge in viewership from slightly smaller places in the US that don’t get to have MLS teams, just like relegation and promotion does across the world

MLS needs to do the same thing baseball did. Reach out to Mexico and merge the leagues, then with both Mexican teams vs American teams, you'd have a much more robust league system. You could do relagation and you'd end up with a FAR more financially viable league system in general.

I think that when MLS does eventually adopt pro/rel, it likely won’t be before 2030 and if that were to happen, it would make sense for the USL to turn into something like the EFL. The top three teams in the championship rise up to MLS, and the bottom 3 teams fall to the Championship. Conferences would need to be eliminated for this to work. If MLS adopts pro/rel, it doesn’t make sense for both the MLS and USL to technically be on the same level of the pyramid

All sports need a promotion and relegation system. This participation trophy system is awful. How can the Browns go 0-16, get first pick at the top rated scout in the country, go 0-16 again and still get rewarded for it. Shit makes no sense. But that’s how billionaires play it in America. They have guarantees on their investments.

my one great hope for soccer in the US is not for us to win a world cup (although that would be insane), its for the USL with pro/reg to either surpass or compete on par with the MLS to the point that the MLS has to merge with them and use pro/reg too. i want a true football pyramid here like in every other country, but in the US. it would be glorious

Trust me. No one is "too big to lose" and especially not the mls. The mls falling off is a very realistic possibility and not a strech. Whatever gets popular attracts attentions which equals more sponsors money and then it snowballs.

The biggest reason why the mls isn’t serious is because it’s all about money. It costs so much to register teams that it doesn’t let there be competition. Also look at their academies it costs thousands of dollars to join an academy so a lot of talented players who can’t afford it never get a chance while in the rest of the world academies bring in players for free
