Nobody of reasonable intelligence would sacrifice themselves for 5 people in that scenario. Human nature prioritises self preservation. If someone puts a gun to your head: you would do exactly what that person says, unless they're telling you to kill somebody much closer to you (family, child, close friend) in which case you may doubt it. There's no reason for you to act so selflessly, the average human fears death to a certain extent, even if they don't actively contemplate it.

Personally I agree with Talia, in my head I would like to think I would be the hero and save the 5 people, but deep down, I wouldn't have the balls to essentially "kill myself", the thought of inflicting pain upon myself is terrifying, and in the moment I would try and avoid that fear and deal with the survivors guilt

Simon for example is saying he would sacrifice, but really? That is nonsense. Would he really give up every little thing hes done in his life for 5 random people? Im a million percent sure he wouldnt even do it for 5 of his friends, and that is completely normal. There are certain things such as love, attraction, self preservation that have been present in humans since the dawn of time. Those wont change just because you want it to.

On the end, by not switching you also didn't save the one person, you let the train do its natural course Also switching could mean that you get charged for murder, accessory for murder or at best man slaughter

Simon probably doesn't realize that pulling the lever in any given situation means that he will be held accountable for the consequences that may come later on. Choosing to be a witness is a safer option as no matter what happens, you aren't directly responsible for anyone's death. Sure, you may not be able to save the larger number of people but at least you aren't a murderer.

Whether or not you see yourself as a murderer is entirely up to you but you wouldn't be legally marked as one as you had no input in what was happening

You're literally participating in an action that involves putting someone's life in servere danger whereas choosing to remain as a bystander would mean that you aren't responsible for anything that occurred.

In real life, when you know you have the ability to save those 5 people and kill the 1 person for it, you kill the one person. Otherwise, you KNOW you "observed" 5 dying despite having the ability and complete control over the situation. There is no competition. I'd be glad to be ostracized as a murderer in that point (although I wouldn't be). The problem didn't occur because of me, I made the best case scenario CHOICE in the scenario I came up upon, in which I had all the info needed to save the most amount of people. Nevertheless, my original comment had NO ONE dying if you pull the lever. You'd still be "observing" 5 people dying if you did nothing. But the whole point is that you know that you have the choice to alter the situation. Hence you pull the lever.

As much as I want to be able to say that I am a good enough person that I would save those 5 people over myself I think realistically I wouldn't.
