There are multiple points of contact that are sordered to the pcb, normally you need a heat gun to heat up the entire part and have all the points of contact come loose before you can pull it out. What he is doing here is spreading solder and connecting all points of contact into one single blob so he can use a simple soldering tip to remove it. Messy

In case this may help someone else, I decided no to do this method and instead just used a small flat head screw driver to pry the connector off. It pulled some of the solder mask with it though.. so be careful if this pcb is important to you.
