I had a request from a fellow KZbinr, Jay jay, asking if it was possible to say/show how I prune my Mme. Alfred Carriere Climbing Roses. This is my first attempt and I hope it's of some interest. All roses behave differently and you have to get to know them. I prune it back usually before Christmas. Some new canes I keep and tie in. Some I cut back to three buds, third leaf. I hope that at least two will shoot but it's usually only one. The following year I'll cut back to below that shoot to keep things tight. You can also actually cut right back to a cane and do what is called 'stumping'. Leave the 'stump' 3 - 4 mm high. New shoots will emerge from that 'stump' - usually. Keep what you want. This rose, like most roses, is very forgiving, and is usually very healthy and has no thorns. I'll do another video in 2 - 3 weeks time when the shoots will have grown some more and things will be a bit clearer.
I shall also be doing one of my Pink Flower Carpet by request.
Any questions - please ask.

Wonderful Peter, it is full of bud just fabulous, I'm certain it will be spectacular in full bloom. I can't wait to see a video of that. You have buds breaking all over it and some of those laterals from last year that you've tied in and promoted to be canes are also full of laterals now and breaking bud it's going to be stunning in the summer ! well done.

Thank you soulgirlktf for you kind comments; you're very observant. I certainly hope we get a good show this year. Mme. A C. is pretty reliable and I love it. I've had a quick look at one of your videos and boy oh boy do your roses looked loved and well cared for. I'll be looking at more properly very soon. You love your garden and it really shows.

@@peterhaymaker7562 Thank you Peter that's very kind of you. I am really enjoying developing this garden - all trial and error, lots of errors of course along the way ! but that's how I learn :) I've never had a greenhouse before moving here, it was already here and that has allowed me to do much more, especially with seeds and over wintering some of the more tender plants. One day I hope to have a garden as fabulous as yours, it's early days only two years here.

Nice Peter and thank you. It was very helpful because we get to see it and know now it’s possible to grow up a house that isn’t a mansion. Also the idea of reaching across and above your pathway is something I’ve never seen before and a great use of space. During the course of the growing season do you hit it again with the long canes that will come up? I think the Blakeney guy mentioned his south facing one he hits his during the summer, and cuts back all the canes that aren’t flowering or in bud when he cuts it back. Leaving only the smaller stems that are in bud at that particular time. I’m pretty sure I will allow my Madame Alfred to wrap around the side of my house to fill the area of Paul’s Himalayan. And your video shows it’s possible to keep it pretty well tamed. I enjoyed watching that thank you

Thanks Jay Jay for the kind comments. I'm glad you liked what you saw. Yes, I do hit it again during the season as it's very vigorous. It's also very good at sending out new flower shoots even if you don't dead head it. I'll do another video in a week or two and see how things are progressing. Who is the 'Blakeney guy' you mention? I'd like to see what his Mme. A. C. looks like. Peter.
