I'm assuming you are asking about the concentrated winding case. It is labor intensive and expensive to have distributed windings. Instead, each slot has the same amount of phase A windings, phase B windings and phase C windings. This creates a more square wave type MMF. But still a sinusoidal MMF fundamental is achievable (think in terms of frequency content in a square wave).
