Technically that's not true. Mamura has met a lot of girls, but he started to hate them due her mother's actions. After that, Suzume was the firat and only girl who never gave up on trying to be his friend, that's why both of them developed a close relationship.

I read this manga when chapters were still being released weekly, so years ago at this point. But these two still remain my favorite manga pairing of all time and I’m still so sad it never got an anime... but some stories are better left as a manga anyways. Spoiler!! I think the reason I loved this manga so much was because the female actually ended up with the second male lead, who I was rooting for the entire to time. most shoujo manga bait you into liking the second male lead more than the main one, but the female always chooses the first guy. Which is sooo frustrating because of how amazing the other guy is, yet the girl is so blinded by naive love that she won’t look at anyone else even if she’s being treated like garbage. This was the FIRST shoujo manga I’ve ever read where the female lead got the opportunity to go back to the main male lead and chose the second one over him. The second to last chapter was sooo painful to read lol because I had to wait a week for an update and the mangaka made it seem like she was going to end up with Shishio. Luckily that wasn’t the case though and finally a second male lead finally won over the girl 😭

this manga had my emotions go wild and crazy, i always love the male leads yet i end up crying my heart out for the 2nd mls. so when i finished it and knew that she ends up with the 2nd ml my heart just skipped a beat. I think Hirunaka's second lead gets girl troup overshadows so much of it's masterful story telling and development. The fact that I have reread the story 5 times isn't because it is nice to see the 2nd lead get with Suzume but how beautifully everything played out. Suzume is one of those rare female leads that are strong and straightforward with her feelings, she is a socially awkward country bumpkin navigating within the superficial city high school environment, and makes friends because her genuine she is. She's not one of those characters that are just so angelic that it seems faked, she gets angry and sad but she tries to fix her problems in a way that carries no malice. Her and Mamura's relationship isn't one giving and the other one taking but its reciprocal, she also brought many things to the table and as a reader I could understand why Mamura wanted no one but her, especially at the ending chapters, they are one of those rare couples that fulfil boxes of wholesomeness, shippable whilst ultimately remaining realistic and relatable. The side ships and friendships were also gold, I love how Hirunaka doesn't have any of those troupy f2ndl that's just there to ruin the relationship, girl everyone moves on. It's so wholesome and realistic, even now I dont think many manga scratches close to how it made me feel when reading it.
