I love how he saw that Moana was doing very good and he went: "that's it, we need more Moana" instead of thinking: "what was it that made Moana so good and how can we make more movies as good as it was?" It's literally so lazy

When I worked in animation, that was legit how the producers thought. They'd be like "Oh, Frozen was a hit, let's make an ice princess movie because the people are into that now!" Just the most superficial reasons. I never understood it. The last time that producer mindset benefitted us though is when Spiderverse droppes and now they all say "People want stylized movies!" And like.... You're still wrong but at least this time it let us to artistic expression we have bee craving for years 😂

@@samtbenjamin I agree, even though they were releasing fewer movies during that time frame than today at least a lot of those movies were new, original ideas (Winnie the Pooh being a partial exception since it included shorts made in the 60s) even if some of them were pretty subpar by their standards at the time. Nowadays it seems like they've entered a doom loop where their original movies started sucking so now they're going to rely even more on sequels which never live up to the originals, as Ralph Breaks The Internet and Frozen 2 demonstrate. Encanto is looking more and more like a lucky fluke, a "miracle" if you will.

You can sum up Bob Iger's "leadership style" with this quote from him: "We are not obligated to make art, we art not obligated to make history, we are obligated to make money." The difference is when Eisner had crowds of people who screamed at him to stop, he actually stopped. Because he knew if the crowd was angry, no money would come from it. And it didn't have to be a large crowd. Iger and Chapek (both from the same thought school) have decided they need X amount of people to complain before they act on something and change it. They want as much money as possible and hatewatching is still watching. They don't care. They want your money. Any publicity is money to them. Eisner is still a chump. Eisner still sucks. Eisner still knew that if you had at least ten people grumbling, that represented enough people to indicate he should do something before ten became ten thousand. Iger and Chapek know that the climate of human beings have changed. We won't do anything to stop them. We have apathy too badly and we will not actually boycott any of these creations. When it comes to the live actions, despite us as a whole finding them vapid and uninspired, we'll go see them to support the WOC actresses. While they do deserve our support because of the hate they're getting? You can do that without seeing the movie or buying the merchandise. You can give support without money. Close your wallets and if Disney sends you a survey or anything to ask why you're not buying... Tell them how unoriginal they are, how the sequels are not your Disney, and the remakes aren't "magical". That's the only way to get them to change.
@jennifermcilwrath
@jennifermcilwrath 6 ай бұрын
That’s not the full quote. Eisner actually said: “We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make a statement. But to make money, it is often important to make history, to make art, or to make some significant statement. We must always make entertaining movies, and, if we make entertaining movies, at times, we will reliably make history, art, a statement or all three. We cannot expect numerous hits, but if every film has an original and imaginative concept, then we can be confident that something will break through.” There’s plenty to criticise Michael Eisner for, but I’d say the the current Disney ethos - making money irrespective of quality - it pretty antithetical to Eisner’s philosophy as expressed above.

Another big trend I’ve noticed is how afraid of “showtunes” Disney has become. The music is now very pop-y and more mainstream rather than suiting a character or story. And that lack of rich music has been a huge contributor to why the movies feel so empty. The songs aren’t bad, they just don’t have the same soul that they used to. Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (responsible for the scores of Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, etc.) were classical Broadway songwriters/playwrights and understood what they were writing for- animated Broadway musicals. When the emotion is too much to speak, you dance, and when the emotion is too big for dance, you sing, and that was the philosophy of Disney's renaissance scores written by Menken and Ashman. To give Lin Manuel Miranda credit, he also knows what he's writing- pop music for cash grabs. It doesn't have to be thoughtful, lyrically engaging, or soulful- just catchy enough to sell and get the kids singing it.

The sad thing is - all though people are dissapointed by the movies, there are still enough parents with children who see names such as 'Moana 2', 'frozen 2', 'live action Alladin' and think: "Oh, my children liked those movies, lets go to there", or the children themselves will beg to go to the movies because they recognize characters. Even if it isnt turning huge profit, or are critical dissasters, Disney has the money to take the fall. And by doing this, they dont have to put a lot of money into creative teams and animation. Adding to the whole 'workload of the employees' question: Moana 2 is made in Vancouver, a studio branch that Disney just opened about 3 years ago. They stated they would only outsource TV work there when US animation workers voiced their concern about major flagship projects potentially going to the cheaper location, too. So, not only do a lot of US workers feel replaced and betrayed by this, I would also guess that not all workers in Vancouver knew about this change when being hired. Traditionally TV contracts pay way less than big feature animations, so I am really worried that they been underpaying a lot of their employees through this.

I'll be real with you, Strange World is terrible. I give every Disney movie a fair chance because animation deserves it even more so. It's yet another Journey to the Center of the Earth story with absolutely no charm or heart. The twist is mildly interesting but all I did was sit there the entire time and go "When you did Atlantis you failed because of an overbloated but interesting cast." Which let's be honest. Think of Atlantis. If you can't remember names, you remember their personalities and their character designs. Strange World doesn't even have that but they have a cute gooey mascot. They still have too many characters I can't keep track of but at least in Atlantis, I wanted more. In here, I'm irritated by the presence of these characters who roll in out of nowhere and go "MEMBA ME? SO WE GONNA DO THIS LOL YEAH YOUR DAD GOT LOST DOWN HERE HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE TRAUMA!" And it becomes a family affair which is the only tolerable part of the storyline. The problem is we go back and forth on potential resolutions to family drama and because the other half is this uninteresting expedition cast and we have to actually move the plot along, there's no sign of potentially resolving any family differences or drama. BUT THE MOM IS COOL THOUGH. It's a 2/5. It's not even made for children in mind, it's absolutely for middle schoolers and I don't mean that for the queer topics because it's very much blink and you miss it. It's very shallow and barely there. You'd forget it. Nah that's the science which while cool and very much grounded in real life, it may not feel fun for everyone watching because the science gets absolutely beaten into you in a few scenes. And once you see some of the more fun science things, it does spoil the movie. As someone who really doesn't like Atlantis, watch Atlantis instead.

Like you said, he was often in debt and put any profits back into new creations and projects... and he didn't live extravagantly. He didn't actually enjoy the business side of things and he wasn't driven by a desire for personal wealth. It really makes me sad to see how the Disney company has become the opposite of what Walt stood for - basically synonymous with greed and lack of originality. There's no heart or risk-taking, as you pointed out. We need another great storyteller with *ideas* and genuine enthusiasm for the work, like Walt Disney or Howard Ashman. Thank you for making this well-researched video - I feel like so many have forgotten Walt's stance against sequels etc. I hope this reminds people of what Disney used to be, and could be again. The audience needs to demand better quality and more of a focus on *story* and *art*, and stop supporting the inferior "products" they're pumping out. Maybe if they keep losing money, they'll become desperate enough to start taking risks again?

Return of Jafar was subpar, but the series that spun off from it and the final film (which felt more like an actual sequel while also being a proper series finale), were pretty solid. I don't have any way of knowing for sure, but there seemed to be alot of passion and heart that went into creating them even if they were operating on a very limited budget (and it showing). One of the few examples of them actually doing a good job expanding on the characters personalities in a way that seemed consistent with who they were in the first film (only downside being Dan Castallaneta replacing Robin Williams for the series, but the animation picked up alot of the slack and made it less of a problem IMO).

My biggest gripe with the newly announced sequels is that they literally do not add anything new to the originals. Moana had an ending that resonated with finality. Frozen II had a conclusion that did not leave much left to be explored, apart from mythology and side characters that could theoretically receive stories in a spin-off form. The only sequels that I think have potential are Inside Out 2 and Zootopia 2 because both of those narratives have ideas and mythology that can be expanded upon and made into a new narrative that continues the growth of the main protagonists. A good sequel in the Disney canon CAN be done. There is a precedent from way before Frozen II. A sequel done right that often gets forgotten for some reason in the Disney canon is The Rescuers Down Under (1990), which continued the relationship between Bernard and Bianca while also raising the stakes and taking them on a journey in a new country. The side characters and villain were also well-written and the arcs and narrative felt complete by the end of the story. As part of the Disney Renaissance, it felt like it belonged with the other films, which is why its absence from discussion regarding Disney sequels is baffling to me, but that’s a different story. I wish that Disney would return to its roots with 2D animation, which is what they should have done with Wish (2023) - oh the irony - but with the lack of animators who are exceptional in that arena, I fear that this upcoming era of Disney is going to be bleak. I want to believe in their storytelling, but everything in that department seems to be pedestrian now.

even with the straight to dvd sequels we had actually good ones like cinderella 3 and aladdin and the king of thieves. i feel like those movies with a bigger animation budget and a more concisive story would be great bc they actually play with some neat concepts and explore more of the world and characters. cinderella 3 was great for fleshing out the characters more, like making cinderella be more present in her own story (unlike the previous movie which was like... too much mice chase scenes) and fight for the happy ending that her abusive stepmother stole from her, the prince has an actual personality and he's actually pretty funny, anastasia got character development, we saw how cruel lady tremaine can get... and this movie has STAKES oh my god. aladdin 3 had some issues (too much disney/pop culture references coming from the genie, jasmine basically doing nothing the entire movie), but we actually get some insight into aladdin's backstory, his father, and a good adventure searching for the hand of midas.

The Rescuers was conceived as a three part movie but it ended at two due to our loss of many of the cast, Miss Bianca in particular. What COULD have been is heartbreaking because the books have a wealth of small ideas to launch to bigger ones. And to be fair, The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under are the only movies I accept from Disney as done well for sequels. While the Aladdin straight to VHS movie are fun, they are fun and nothing else. The Rescuers had a reason for them both to be there.

To be entirely fair, I really liked some of the newer original movies you listed (Luca, Soul, and Turning Red). They didn't feel super formulaic? The problem with those was that they were released straight to streaming with little fanfare, so they couldn't really perform well at the box office. Something similarly happened to Onward and Encanto. They had their box office run hindered by being sent to streaming right after their theatrical release. Encanto was a huge hit regardless because of the virality of its soundtrack. Also, Coco (2017) is counted as a recent-ish addition, right? I'm not disagreeing that Disney is putting corporate greed over art, that's true; but I don't want to discount the creativity and love that went into some of the recent animated films they've put out.

The problem with Onward was that literally a week into its theatrical run the world shut down because of Covid, which also forced Luca, Soul and Turning Red to go directly to streaming (as well as Raya and the Last Dragon), and they couldn't just sit on those films until the world opened back up (because we didn't know when we'd be able to get back to normal)

My faith in Disney is at an all-time low, Wish was the last straw for me. If they couldn't do right by their 100th anniversary celebration movie, then what hope is there for them in the future? It feels like they've entered a death spiral where their original movies started sucking and underperforming, causing them to rely more and more on sequels to films that worked in the past to the point that eventually the milk from these cows will run dry and then unless they manage to produce new ideas in the future that prove successful they'll be left with nothing. This is at the same time that the competition is starting to outdo them and beat them at their own game. At this rate Disney could very well become the Sears of animation, an all-powerful giant that grew fat and complacent in the face of new competition before withering away.

I can't help but compare disney to Ghibli, as many other people do. Disney keep producing these lifeless, pointless movies that follow, as you said, some template, a check-list that should (in theory) secure their success...still, people fall out of love with the studio with every movie they release. On the other hand, Ghibli take creative risks, with their last movie feeling so personal to Miyazaki as if he has made a movie for himself and nobody else, but everybody loved it. I don't know a single person who would say that movie wasn't mesmerizing...I'd even say it changed the course of my life, as dramatic as that may be. I think the point of this comparison is that art shouldn't strive to please as many people as it can because it ends up pleasing nobody, its creator included.

Those words, coming from her artistic, creative, trivia loving, wanted-to-work-for-Disney daughter had said the words she never expected to hear. And it was a hard dose of reality in how much they have sunk. Thank goodness all the Disney's are passed on because it would break their hearts to see the company now. It's a laughing stock that is oversaturated with soulless CGI milking nostalgic cows until they're dried up and then they kick them for more milk. I gave and watched Frozen II but that was the last CGI animated film I watched. I'd rather go back to my VHS collection from the 90's and talk with my kid about all the methods used in the creation of 2D art, the art that inspired me decades ago to want to become a professional artist. I could sit there and tell you all the nuances that went on behind the scenes and what was adlibbed and what frames to pause to see something you shouldn't.... god, the good old days. Farewell Disney.

Because we're actually a very small group and the majority of people do want these things. Disney only responds if you hurt their bottom line with a message that you're not accepting any of this. When the straight to VHS stuff got worse and worse, they stopped making it. Because people didn't buy it anymore. If you stopped seeing the remakes and stopped your friends from seeing it, we'd get things done. No more remakes. No more sequels. No more nothing. But until you start costing them money for making sequels and remakes, you're actually not giving them criticism at all.

The best way to artistically expand these worlds is through a series. That gives time for genuine expansion. Take TTS, that show expanded on all the characters from the film in some way, and created some great new ones, like Cassandra and Varian, all with an interesting overarching story. (Highly recommend that show BTW.) But they've only done it for Tangled and BH6. How about an Encanto one? With a dozen main characters to work upon. Or a Raya show, where we learn more about the characters and their cultures? These worlds are ripe for expansion! Sadly, TV shows aren't as profitable, so we get stuck with these movies instead.

Pick some fairytale that aren’t well known, from countries other than England and France, and do retellings with the Disney magic. I think it would satisfy the need for refreshing stories, as well as cultural representation. I also think they should revisit the romance aspect of their films. Maybe not every film, but they should consider introducing it back into their films. Can we also get a princess that has a ball gown transformation? I miss those too

It is very weird to me how in the last 5 years, Disney seems to increasingly decide that stories that should be TV shows are going to be movies and stories that should be movies are gonna be TV shows. Moana ends with the PERFECT hook for a TV show, with several seasons of Moana exploring with her father, growing up into a leader, and overall maturing. Why make it a sequel movie? The Marvels and The Eternals should have also been TV shows, while She-Hulk and Loki should have been movies, and I could probably go on about that if I actually cared to watch anything Disney at this point in my life.
