Not only does it cover real Pacific Islander mythology, but it's based on the real-world thousand year period where anthropological evidence suggests they completely stopped traveling between islands. They were voyagers, stopped for a full millennium, then began voyaging again, and nobody knows why.

The scene where the ocean parts & Te Kā comes racing across the seafloor towards Moana, only for her to see what she really is and help her break through the pain and rage is one of the most well-crafted and beautiful moments in animation, period. The same goes for the "I Am Moana" sequence.

Fun fact about newborn turtles: a big thing that's always made clear is that if you're going to help them find the water, you absolutely cannot carry them there. They have to find it on their own. The scene at the beginning is essentially how Moanas journey ends up going out on the ocean. She may have been pointed in the right direction, but ultimately she had to do it on her own.

The ocean chose Moana because of her HUMANITY. Maui couldn’t do it, he's shoot first ask questions later. The ocean couldn’t do it because water hurts Te Ka.

*I love Moana's development, but Maui's personal growth was amazing. From being such a vain, self-absorbed, borderline narcissistic demigod to becoming a kind-hearted and loving friend and mentor is awesome, plus hearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sing is pretty damn badass. I love how they cast Nicole Scherzinger (lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls) as Moana's mother.*

I think the reason the ocean sent Moana back to the island the first time was because she didn't know the film history of her people yet, and she had to know they were meant to be voyages in order to have the full sense of purpose that would power her through her journey. Not to mention the fact that her grandmother still had the heart of Tefiti, which she would need to fulfill her purpose.

16:25 2 things about that: 1. Friend or not, the oceans helpfulness isn't infinite. It can barely stop Te Kas fireballs. 2. Moana wasnt taking it seriously. She only did it to prove her dad wrong. If not the fish, she would've found an excuse to go out there anyway.

I think there's an even more critical point at work: Moana was (unknowingly) trying to leave WITHOUT THE HEART. Why would the Ocean help her leave when she isn't in possession of the most crucial element of the mission?

I called the twist the first time i ever saw it. Something Maui said made me think of other female villain motivations. Basically, theyre more personal. Usually something was done to them, or had something stolen from them. Specifically, i was thinking of the land before time sequel that introduced chomper. The whole movie had them being chased by a big dino, only to realize its Chompers mother.

One of my favorite things about this movie is gramma saying "This was a lot to put on you, & it wasn't fair. If you want to go home, it's okay." Too many times in books/movies the chosen one is pushed to continue no matter what, & has little support or acknowledgement of how much is being put on them.

I suppose the grass - or seaweed - is always greener on the other side. lol I think they did a good job at balancing the protagonist Moana and deuteragonist Maui. The demi-god is a larger than life character, so it could have been easy for him to overshadow the lead - which is intentionally played for both comedy and drama a couple of times. However, they ensured Moana remained the primary drive of the film, with her actions and choices moving the narrative, as we also follow her character development - with its dips and recoveries - which also encouraged Maui's own growth. They skirted the line with Maui's obnoxiousness, but that adds to the the reveal that his arrogance and showboating were born from insecurity and grief due to being abandoned; Maui created the pompous persona as to appear god-like to the humans, and he was afraid of losing their love, thus why he had an escalation of stunts in an attempt to cling to that love. In a way, the story is a coming-of-age for both leads, with Moana learning her limits but ways to succeed despite them, discovering her cultural identity and focus her sense of independence (both also allowing her to reach mastery of oceanic navigation), and Maui learning to no longer become so enraptured by worship that he would cause chaos again, stop being so selfish, and learn that he doesn't need everyone to love him to feel complete. (also, while Maui is millennia old, his maturity stagnated, so in a sense, he was also still a child) I recall reading Heihei was made to be the dumbest, most useless animal sidekick, just because it'd be funnier. I think Moana's emotional arc could also be a parallel for any kind of self-discovery, so it can work for anything really, whether one cares about the ocean or not. As it may be noticed for Tamatoa, Jemaine Clement is performing similar to David Bowie, which was apparently because Bowie was originally considered for the role, but his health declined and he passed away before recording could be completed. The character himself - with his flair and fashion - is like an affectionate if comedic tribute to the late singer. Mildly amusing when he makes the fourth wall break in the post-credit scene where he complains people would care about him if his name was Sebastian.

Ah yes, Moana (2016), directed by the great John Musker and Ron Clemments, the same guys who also directed The Great Mouse Detective (1986), The Little Mermaid (1989), Aladdin (1992), Hercules (1997), Treasure Planet (2002), and The Princess and the Frog (2009). Also, I like Moana, you see, is not entirely CGI, but has a little 2D animation as well, such as with Mini-Maui. Overall, Moana feels like the last good, fully-animated feature film from Disney. All other fully-animated non-Pixar Disney films released after this one range from meh to dull. However, the last good half-animated live-action Disney film would be the recent 2018 sequel to Mary Poppins, called Mary Poppins Returns.

I think the reason the ocean doesn't help her more is that this is her journey. It helps in small ways, but she's the hero of this story. I suppose the ocean could have just taken the heart back to Tefiti, but then there'd be no story to tell. We see similar themes in religious stories across cultures. There are gods that champion certain heroes in Greek mythology, but it's part of the hero's journey to face and overcome adversity. Speaking from my own religion, Christians believe that sometimes God let's us struggle as a means of growth. There are miracles in the Bible, but Moses still had to journey back to Egypt and face Pharaoh. The Hebrews found their promised land but had to sojourn in the wilderness for 40 years before they got it. Moana is destined to be the hero of her story, and the ocean won't do for her what she can do for herself.

I lived 5 years in Waikiki Beach, suburb of Honolulu and this movie goes to the part of my heart where Hawaii lives. Grandma chose to die when she did. Dad was going to destroy the boats so she distracted him with what was coming anyway (earlier she was coughing and unsteady), and grandma told Moana to go while he was distracted. The little turtle and the big one are Crusher and Squirt from Finding Nemo. Hey Hey means trouble some child. I tell my troublesom students to not be a Hey Hey. They were afraid Rock couldn't sing. It is great to see it again. I have seen Moana 88 times. I know, right! I worked at a museum with an IMAX theater so I could just walk in and sit down. When Moana opened there, every seat, and the aisles and the stairs were full. I do animation presentations for Middle School art kids, and Moana is one of the movies I use. Kokamora are based on the island Minihuni, little trouble makers that live in the forest and are never seen. DId you see BayMAX in the Kokamora crowd when she first jumps on the pirate ship? You're so amazing wasn't scripted, Auili'i made it up. In Hawaii, babies were thought to come from the sea, and if one came that wasn't right or wanted, they were returned to rejoin the circle of life. The chior, Pacifica Voices, was assembled for the movie and as I understand it still performs. Islander bodies are more robust, thicker, and the Moana that appeared in Ralph Breaks the Internet, her lovely, solid body was made into a Barbie. You edited this masterfully. There was a lot removed, but you succeeded in keeping the story flow. Now, Moana 2 tomorrow, but not 88 times. I've begged the theater general manager for a poster.

It seems to me that the answer to the question of why the Ocean didn't help Moana leave the first time she tried is quite obvious: she was trying to leave WITHOUT the Heart! It has chosen her to restore the Heart, so clearly it can't let her leave until she has it back in her possession, and can take it with her.

I think we all have that one weirdly instinctive and childish desire deep down, the one you can't tell when it first appeared, it was just always there, but no matter how old you get it never went away (mine was always to sit down under a sunshade in an empty beach with white sand, looking at the clear water and feeling the wind in my hair) I've always loved the way this film represents the fact that her dream is literally in front of her, that she could make it come true at any second, and on top of that the conflict of knowing that she could have what she wants at any second and having to deal with her responsabilities as a princess They represented this indecision so well, and every time she screams that "What is wrong with me" in her solo it gives me goosebumps all over

way I see it, first time she tries sailing she doesnt have the heart, her grandmother does so the ocean needs her to go back, also needs to teach her how scary things can be. Later its a bit more questionable but also ocean is gonna be ocean, as much as it wants to help her etc it can't really go against its own nature too and ask any sailor, the ocean is fickle and treacherous!
