Enrico , Harry'The Hunchback' Riccobene was a high-ranking member of the Philadelphia crime family who later became a major figure in the short, but violent, gang war with Nicodemo "Little Nicky" Scarfo following the 1980 death of the long-reigning boss Angelo Bruno.

Excellent report! I lived in South Philly during this time. It was INCREDIBLE! The phone booth hit was legend. Here the 72-year-old hunchback is trapped in a phone booth and manages to fight his shooter with his bare hands to foil the murder! People were being shot on the street weekly. You really had to be careful not to be caught in the crossfire. When the shooting started you hit the floor and stayed there because you didn't know if they were finished. People were getting shot by stray bullets IN THEIR HOMES! Those were the days.

I hadn't heard that, but it makes sense. After Castellano was hit Gigante set up a car bombing for Gotti that was supposed to draw suspicion away from the family and towards the Irish gang Westies. What's going on in Philly these days? I see Skinny Joe always posting on Instagram and Facebook. What's that about?

Awesome. Thanks so much for this one. I saw this guy on some A&E documentary 15 years ago and I always wondered about him afterwards. I tried looking him up but didn't find much. This was a great choice cuz he's not so well known, and a real character. I said this a couple months back, but I'll say it again. A video on "Big" Al Bruno from Springfield, MA would be a good one. My own father was investigating his crew back in the day and they ended up being members at the same golf club years later. My pop says that he didn't hold a grudge about all the trouble the detectives gave them through the years and was always a gentleman afterwards. When he was killed, our whole city went to hell with heroin which I've heard was because the flood gates were open cuz Al wasn't around to fear anymore. Anyways, great stuff man. Keep it up!

My grandfather told me, Harry Riccobene was big into drugs and because my grandfather and Alfred Eppolito were also big into drugs, they would supply Harry with heroin, imported from Panama. Drugs was against the rules, but my grandfather was BIG into drugs and he worked with Carmine Galante, Charlie Barcellona, Alfred Eppolito, Giuseppe Rispaldi, Giacomo DeRosa etc. Those guys were big in heroin. I could see Riccobene with that beard at Woodstock sitting around barely clothed passing around a ganja bowl with total strangers and something like this: Hipster 1 to Riccobene: “like, what do you do to survive, bro?” Riccobene: “I’m a mob boss” Hipster 2: “Far out, maaaan. (laughs) That’s like so kewwl and all. Lotsa dannnnger and unknowwwwn and all. That’s really kewwwl, duuude. Becky, hand me that hash, please, But right onnnn maaaan. I never met a real ganggster before, I mean, I prefer peeace and all, ya know, but here take the bowl, duuuude. Wow, yer a gannnngsterr. Hey Ronnie, this dude’s a gangster ! “ (laughs and exhales weed smoke)

Harry had a lions heart he should of been called Harry The Lion Heart Riccobene. He wasn't afraid of scarfo and I believe if he had the right type of muscle with him he would of turned the tables on Scarfo.Riccobene was built for the life he took the bullets, the time, and he had the smarts. He also kept his mouth shut and took his situation to the grave.

Why would he do Henry Hill. Just watch GoodFellas or, better yet, read Wiseguy. From what I've been able to tell Gene Marshall has made a commitment to producing short docs about lesser known mobsters who were major factors w/o the glam.

As much as it was terrible that he was a killer mobster, this guy is a fucking badass. First made man ever, powerful basically from 1927 until his death. This guy was short and not at all physically imposing, but he still took plenty of bullets and did damage back. And most of that was when he was already really old! And, to top it all off, he survived the war and lived to be 91 before dying naturally. Crazy life

Thanks brother...entertaining as always. It just seemed that with Scarfo it wasn't about his power it was about him proving a point as to who would eat first and how much they would eat (earning and paying tributes). It seemed like he felt a sense of special entitlement over even established families and other bosses in the Philadelphia syndicate. What are your thoughts?
