Phones usually are faster, have more bands (most cheaper hotspots in Europe only have B1/3/5/7/8/20/28/38/40 for example) but a weaker reception.

?? Great Video: Could you do a video (or simply 'comment') on Mobile Router -v- carrying either a spare phone (with a pre-paid Pay As You Go SIM) and / or using one of those phones that can take two SIMs. (Using a spare phone instead of a mobile router would presumably mean you could call someone - from your 'primary' monthly plan mobile - while simultaneously accessing the web from your 2nd, pre-paid, SIM on a spare phone. Also, that kind of set-up would give you a back-up phone too. A medium spec 'spare' phone might cost about the same? as a mobile router (could buy a second-hand one). Only thing is, could two people connect to a single spare mobile (either one-at-a-time, or both at the same time?) Cheers

Champion! Exactly the information i've been looking for. If you could set me straight please... I'm a vlogger based in Laos who uploads daily life and travel videos of this country. I do not edit videos while travelling as it's too time consuming and interrupts our time away. I edit all video captured upon our return. Problem is the channel takes a hit because of the few weeks without uploads. I have been toying with the idea of doing LIVE streams while on the road to keep my subscribers engaged, but after doing some "test" LIVE streams on my mobile phone network I found the quality very poor, even though the speed is still good enough to watch Netflix on my phone. So, your saying a portable wifi router using a sim card and even the same internet provider would produce a better quality LIVE stream on my mobile than just using the phones own hardware? Thank you for your help 🙏 Todd

One of the things most reviews do not address are items that cannot use WiFi. If you tether your phone to one of these routers, you can hard connect an ethernet into your item that cannot use WiFi. Now, it depends on the router sometimes (because maybe a lack of ethernet port). But, something videos on KZbin rarely talk about.

I'll be traveling from the US to eastern Europe for a few weeks. I'm looking to get the best possible internet performance on the go and am wondering if I should add a hotspot data plan to my existing AT&T (and possible roaming charges) or go with a local SIM? It's just for temporary use so I'm leaning towards a local SIM, but curious if there are downsides. I need around 25-30 mbps. Thanks.

Sorry if this is a dumb question.. But... If I put a Sim card in my phone and play games will it be faster if I put that Sim card in a router and connected my phone to the router? Or will the extra step for the data not be worth the bigger antenna of the router? If my question makes sense.

And if it is taking it away from my cell phone data then I assume I could only use as much data according to how much inteneret i have on my plan right?

the problem here is that you would either need another plan, or need to take your sim card out of your phone to use in your mobile router and lose your access to calls on your phone while using it. i cant seem to find any information as to how to tether your phone to a router and use the routers Ethernet ports to connect devices. example: frank has a camp with no internet access but has good cell signal. frank doesn't want a separate plan to pay for as he only goes to camp twice a year. frank just wants to tether/connect his phone to a router for the internet and let his router do the rest for his wired and wireless connections. i should be able to do this with a USB-C to Ethernet adapter, and connecting to a router in theory but cant seem to find any info. would hate to spend money only to find it doesnt work. any suggestions?

Not an answer to the question, but on trying to find a temporary solution for internet that's down at home, I got on a network who has in their ToS (for unlimited data) that "...[their] SIM card should not be used as a permanent long-term alternative to home broadband". There was an example given on what counts under that, though I don't know at what point they'd enforce that limit...
@jk41shadow
@jk41shadow 8 ай бұрын
Lots of people have tried it since its cheaper on the pocket. But the internet providers put a stop to it. Thats why phone plans have a limit to how much data is allowed to be used. Its in the terms and conditions, If you pass it, they can cut your line without any questions or issues. You cant debate them on it. But if they enforce it its a different question. Now, I dont think they do as long as your not downloading extreme amount of files and just using it to stream netflix, or other media sites. But it your using it to game, and download files its a probability and most likely will happen. Since you will be using an extreme amount of data.

Nice that was the video i was looking for, thanks! But i'd like some numbers like speed and ping compared to a smartphone in tethering (mostly ping). I live and work in a RV and in tethering it's hard sometimes because, first of all Samsung network coverage is worst then my old Huawei, second my provider will throttle my connection speed sometimes because it's not allowed to use the Hotspot "too much" (wtf). I heard also that with these mobile routers, the data used will not be considered as "hotspot" from the carrier. Is it correct?

hi mate thanks for the video, quick question regarding the performance of 4G routers. Im currently using my Phone tethering to game on, using speed test i average around 25-35ms of ping. Would i be likely to see a lower latency with a 4G Router or nothing noticeable. Thanks
@pucciox40
@pucciox40 3 жыл бұрын
imo not significantly to justify the cost. 4G latency is due to the placement of the BTS and you'd only improve your WiFi latency signal of a couple o ms, not worthy imo but, if you game on a pc/play station and can use an ethernet cable, then a non-portable LTE router with Ethernet ports would be better (Huawei and tp link have a couple of good CAT 6 choices)

@@pucciox40 yeah this was my idea. Ill be gaming / streaming on a PC. its as i will be moving to a house with no Built in broadband so would rather use 4G until 5G is available in the area. Thanks for the quick overview on these, it didn't quite answer what I'd hoped which was for a little more in specifics, but you might be able to give a little from personal experience with these devices. To describe why these interest me, a good friend is in an area where he can only get a 8mbps landline but has direct line of sight to the local mobile tower - he's currently using his phone basicly all the time for tethering. Hence me looking for the ping and bandwidth like for like comparisons

Ahhhh! Ok, well I can tell you that I have been running on a SIM internet at one of my two main work locations for more than a year and it's always been a solid connection. 70-80 megabits Download on the 4G SIM router and that compares with a 100-120 megabit physical/landline connection I have. More direct comparisons are going to be tough (so many variable in location, physical building surroundings, etc) - even day of the week and fair usage policy from the mobile data provider will play their part! I'd say that if they have already well establish good mobile data coverage, than a mobile router is going to be excellent. Most places are going to have return policies, so you can always try first.

So I did an experiment last night for a podcast. We record most of the eps over zoom but I wanted to do mine live from city centre using my generic Android tablet (the podcast is being recorded by my friend a few miles down the road on his laptop) Now using the phone was fine for a normal chat. But as soon as he started sharing his screen or recording the zoom my audio quality and video quality dropped considerably to the point where it was unworkable and they couldn't make me out. Do you think one of these routers would help with the quality? Or what do you advise in relation to mobile routers?

@nascompares 2 жыл бұрын
If both the sim in your phone and the sim in your router are o2, then they are subject to the same cellular coverage from that phone network. HOWEVER! It is also worth adding that some routers have external antenna that are considerably more powerful than the small, internal antenna of your phone/handset and therefore have a much wider/stronger signal capture. Here is an example of a 5G SIM router I reviewed that has such a thing - www.google.com/search?q=dlink+5g+router+review&oq=dlink+5g+router+review&aqs=chrome..69i57j33i10i160l2.6220j0j7&client=ms-android-google&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#

No they have there own sim card and dedicated allotment. Thats why you pay extra for that particular line and wifi on the router. When your using your phone hotspot its counted as hotspot data on your phone not phone internet data. Your phone plan either has it or it doesn't. Its count seperate as your data on your phone. If you use hotspot on your phone and you dont have any hotspot on your phone plan you will be chadged extra by your provider for using hotspot. So check your phone provider.

You can connec a tv to anything that provides internet. So you can use your phones hotspot to connect intertnet on your tv. But the battery will drain fast and have to have it connect to the wall all the timre to use it. As a quick solution it works. A better solution would be a mobile router or mifi. Would work great for a period of time using the same concept. The battery will last longer than the phone without being pluged in all the time. 10 to 12 hours. Its a easy get up and go device. Its cheaper on the bill to provide internet access then your regular internet plan and router. But a mobile router will do the trick. Keep in mind the regula router and internet data and will always be ideal and the best choice.

A lot of talk, but no testing / benchmark = useless. Until you actually do the testing or can point to a published benchmark, all the talks are just speculation. A dedicated hotspot may in theory have more room for better antenna and a more purposeful design, but I am not sure at all if what you can get on the market are not optimized for providing just enough performance at the lowest cost vs better performance vs a typical smart phone. The manufacturing economic of smartphone has such a big advantage in term of scale so even a $99 smartphone like a last year Moto G has a much better processor, 2-4x the amount of RAM, and about the same size of battery as a dedicated hotspot device that I am not at all sure it does not also outperform the hotspot in terms of speed and throughput.

Don't get a turbo Hotspot 2. They are junk. Just use your phone as a hotspot. trust me. There are more options with using the phone as hotspot as well. You can figure those out yourself. wink wink...

thanks! now i will stop using my iphone as a router, it deteriorates the phone's health and value. I will use a bag from now on for that portable router. i don't mind the "inconvenience" of it.
