With the new Wi-Fi 7 standard officially being released in January 2024, it's time to take a big-picture look at the current and near-future state of Wi-Fi for use in RVs, vans, and boats, and to give our recommendations for what to look for when shopping for new hardware.
Everyone loves Wi-Fi, which has almost become synonymous with the concept of having an internet connection.
But Wi-Fi doesn't magically connect you directly to the internet - it's a fundamental technology used to wirelessly connect your devices to some sort of router or access point that is connected to the internet.
This typically makes Wi-Fi a crucial piece of the connectivity chain involved in getting you and your devices online.
But Wi-Fi can be used for a lot more than Internet access. It also enables local connections-including between your devices and network storage devices, printers, smart TVs, and more.
Like all Internet-adjacent technologies, Wi-Fi is not static. The technology and standards behind the Wi-Fi advances over time to be more capable and robust, supporting ever-faster speeds and new capabilities.

Nice video, Andy. Good overview and very timely. FWIW: Lower frequencies, like 2.4 GHz, penetrate non-metal walls better than higher frequencies, but for clear line-of-sight applications, power will be the main determinant of effective operating distance. I presume the power output of all Wi-Fi devices is limited by the spectrum regulations for those devices, but I do not know the exaction specifications. That is why directional antennas are used; all of the power is “focused” at a small target some distance away. Exact same idea as you report on with cellular boosters, etc.

Most mobile routers, hotspots and smartphones use omnidirectional antennas to distribute or receive Wi-Fi signals. Directional usually only comes into to play for Wi-Fi access points such as in a campground, and perhaps an RVer using a directional Wi-Fi antenna to pick up long range Wi-Fi. Directional antennas are also rarely useful in a marine environment with a boat that is always in motion.

@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Of course, but that was not the core of my point, which was the basic physics of electromagnetic propagation.

Excellent video. I have a Google Wi-Fi mesh system with three access points. It was purchased about 8 years ago. It automatically selects 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz, depending on the device. I pay for 500 Mbps download speed from my ISP. I do get 400+ Mbps near the main router, which is next to the modem. The other two access points are connected wirelessly. I only get 90 Mbps download speed at the third access point, which is on the opposite side of the house of the router. Is it normal to have speeds reduced that significant at the third node with these older mesh router systems? Would a tri band Wi-Fi 6 mesh router likely provide better speeds at the third access point?

I use to use my hot spot off my phones, to stream just SD tv and it works fine, but my son liked to play games on the internet so his sister brought over the T-Mobile home Internet and I just pay the bill. Well come may 8 they are gonna geo lock the gateways to the address you singed up with and wont work if you go stray to far away. But for just 160$ you cant take it wherever you want🤣🤣🤣🤣 They can have the gateway back and I will just go back to hotspot, its included in my old sprint plan. 60 gigs if high speed 3g speeds after that. 360 or 480 p video. My son is gonna be mad

I feel they are pushing new WiFis too soon. WiFi 6E should never have existed in the first place, and waited for WiFi 7.. Please stop pushing these "small" changes to fast, and make more significant changes before releasing it. that would nice!
