Starlink Plan Changes: Roam Increased to $165/mo, In motion Use, International

Late last night, Starlink rolled out a revamped data plan line up - in many ways simplifying things.
The biggest changes are a price increase to what was once Mobile Regional (now called Roam Unlimited) from $150/mo to $165/mo. And the 50GB Roam plan is now available for all Starlink Dishes, not just the Mini.
With the price increase however comes new features - including official in motion use up to 100mph and international use for up to 2 months per trip. However, the option to opt into Priority data by the GB is gone, which will leave ocean going nomads having to purchase the more expensive Mobile Priority plan.

I got the email and this is ridiculous. I do not have residential starlink (neighbor has). I have gen I guess its 2? Dish that has to be set up on a pole or ground mount etc etc. First it went to 135. Then 150. Now 165. I do not need in motion but even if I did... I am about to start paying for in motion starlink on a dish not capable of inmotion. In my opinion these people SHOULD ABSOLUTELY send me a dish free of charge that IS capable of "in motion". Otherwise I am literally paying for something I physically can't have on plan that was drastically different. Either give me a discount or give me a free dish or something. Grrr.

While in motion was one of the features added, the plan did add other features like having full global coverage and coastal waterway support up to 12 nautical miles. The price increase encompasses all these new features together. These new benefits may not be beneficial to you, but Starlink service has to make compromises on what they offer for each plan and they have in their TOS they will notify you at least 1 month in advance of upcoming changes that may negatively effect you and Oct 10th is a month away for the changes to take effect. While you are correct the Gen 2 was never approved for in motion, Starlink has added a "tilt flat" option to the app that would allow it to be used in such a manor or 3rd party mounts are available if you so desired. The Gen 2 hardware is also no longer current and all current hardware now officially supports in motion. You could always try reaching out to support on possibly offering a discounted price or even free upgrade on a Gen 3 hardware to take advantage of this new in motion features on your plan that your Gen 2 cannot take advantage of.

One option if you have multiple internet sources that you would be falling back to is to change your plan to the cheaper Roam 50 GB plan and use Starlink more as a backup and if your total usage is under 165 GB, it will be cheaper than the unlimited plan. You are giving up unlimited data, but you are still getting to take advantage of Starlink at a much more reasonable cost and maybe combine it with other sources.

I've been watching all the whining on various social media Starlink groups about the price/plan changes. If someone can afford to "island hop" or use it in their Cessna, I don't think they get to bitch about the price of Starlink. For me, I use it to make money, so it's a no-brainer. I'm not going to drive around in my $100,000 truck and R.V. and then complain about the means with which I afford it. Does the price increase suck? Maybe, but no one forced me to buy it. I just bought the $299 dish and 50Gb plan because we only use it a few times a month during camping season. After getting the dish setup, it took an update and used 2.3Gb of my 50Gb plan. I wasn't too happy about that, so hopefully that doesn't happen often. We do use a Onn Pro streaming box, that I turn on data saver mode and we can stream video with a little less than 1Gb an hour. That is just the little trick I use to conserve data.

I see and understand a lot of the negative comments about this, however I'm excited for the changes. At least in my situation, I'm using the Residential plan and changing my address once I get to where I'm going, but should I need the in-motion capabilities, its' worth (to me) the extra coin of switching to the Roam plan. I'm keeping it in my back pocket for just that scenario. Thanks for the updates!

Unfortunately Starlink makes changes that often affect a larger pool of customers. The latest changes really change things for boaters that island hop in coastal waters and only make brief passages between them. The plus is now the $50/month 50GB plan is available to any hardware so if you have other options to stay connected, Starlink could be come a better backup service to cellular and help keep the overall costs down.

I got an email from Starlink at 2:01am. It talked about the plan features changes for Starlink Roam like the removal of the in-motion usage restriction. What it DIDN'T tell me is that there was a $15/month price increase. It says nothing about that, so imagine my surprise watching this video. For a guy and a company I hold in very high regard for the most part, that's pretty lame IMHO. Please don't tell me all the great new features of the plan and then conveniently leave off the bad news.

Most likely your service is currently paused so you would not be affected by the price change until you unpaused the service. The email alerted those with currently active service that the price change would occur on Oct 10th.

@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Yes, that's true. Having just recently purchased a Peplink Max BR1 Pro 5G and a T-Mobile Business Internet Unlimited SIM, life's been pretty good living on the towers. Even in Montana so far. Not going to call it perfect by any stretch, but it's allowed me to keep Starlink on pause. Looks like I'll be more reluctant than ever to come off pause. Seems like Starlink saw T-Mobile AWAY go to $160 and said, "Hold my beer!".

Just bought the Roamlink to supplement Starlink. Thinking the same thing as you. Between 100GB of Roamlink and 50GB of Starlink I'm probably covered for most months. Plus, I have an unlimited Calyx 5G hotspot to fall back on after that. That would save me $115 a month.

I don’t think the changes are all that bad. You have to remember that we are always unhappy if something is taken away even if we didn’t use it. My only gripe is with priority data as always on and first use on the $250 plan. Considering it’s the most expensive plan, we should be able to turn it on or off. And as you said, for actuel cruisers making longer passages, this is a key feature. Question though: My boat is in Panama and obviously I don’t want to buy startlink here in NY and then ship it down there. Can I buy it in Panama and will my plans be US based, or Panama based? Is there a difference?

Yes, it has always been a bummer that Starlink does not allow you to toggle the priority data on/off so that you wouldn't use it first in the billing cycle. Starlink is available in Panama according to the Starlink.com/map. I'm not sure if their hardware or service prices are cheaper there, but likely it would be better to order locally from there. By staying local with your service, you can use the cheaper residential or roam plans and also not have to worry about running into the 2 month trip limitation that recently changed in the TOS/FAQ.

We have more reports of better upload speeds these days with Starlink - so it might be more possible. So much depends on how much congestion there is an area however.

While this seems like bad news on the surface, the addition of the pausible $50 of 50GB plan is great! Yes, 50GB isn't much, but the additional data is the exact same price as the first 50. Anyone who uses less than 150GB per month (ie, the equivalent cost of the old unlimited $150 plan) will actually save money with the 50GB+ plan, and I'm guessing the majority can stay below that. When we both worked full time with lots of Zoom meetings for both and lots of KZbin videos (720 res), we never went over 100GB in a month. And you pause the service at the end of each month if not needed at that campsite and unpause as soon as it's needed. So I'm pretty happy about this!

I just bought the standard Gen 3 kit this past Saturday. We plan to possibly use it for our RV when we travel & at our seasonal lake spot. So I opted for the residential plan instead of the mobile plan to just try it out at both locations to see how it worked for us. So.my question is can I switch to the 50gb plan now from the residential & would they prorate or credit the remaining for the residential plan to the account? Or will the change have to wait until the end of the current billing cycle?

When going up in price on a plan, the change takes place immediately and the user is charged the remaining month a prorated amount. When going down in price, the change happens at the next billing cycle and there is no prorating. So if you switch from residential to the 50GB plan, it will happen at the next billing cycle with no prorating.

Right now we're in the purgatory between T-mobile 5G Home Internet and Starlink while also rigorously testing reliability on FMCA's unlimited but throttled AT&T plan. We haven't been notified or booted yet from T-mobile but we did fire up Starlink and plan on mounting it to our rig soon (we'll still do that). With our data usage, not sure the 50gb option would be a value for us. Sigh - the inevitability of change.

So I have a system at home that’s costing $90.00 a month but I got the message that it’s changing. I have a second Gen 2 system that I plan to use this winter in the southwest. It looks like I’ll be paying $165.00 a month but I’ll be able to roam, drive down the freeway. I’ll only be using it for 6 months and then shutting it down.

Most likely the email you received on the $90/month plan was just a TOS notification that the name was changing. They changed the name from Standard back to Residential or in your case Residential - Discounted. Yes the Roam - Unlimited is $165/month but also keep in mind if you are a lower data user, you may benefit from using the Roam 50 GB plan for $50 month and if you stay under 165 GB a month, it still comes out cheaper. You can also switch between plans.

Many cellular plans can match that price, but I do understand that Starlink might be available when cellular is not. $50/mo. for a "backup" is only viable for people with substantial incomes.

I work on a ship and use Starlink Regional, paying only for what I use and pausing the service when I disembark (28 days at home, 28 days on the ship). I will have to cancel it; the price increase is too steep... I hope they resume offering ocean data services for regular people, not just for those with money or companies.

While you can no longer just opt-in to Mobile Priority Data from the cheaper Roam plans, you are prepaying for some Mobile Priority Data and then once that is exhausted, you would continue to pay $2/GB which is the same cost as before. The main difference is you just can't control exactly when that original bucket of Mobile Priority data your plan has (such as 50GB) is used when the billing cycle first starts but with some discipline on how you used it an the beginning of the billing cycle, it may not be that much more expensive for you.

By managing this, could I reduce the monthly cost from $250 to $125?

Yes, you can use the Standard antenna with the Mobile Priority plan. You can pause your Mobile Priority plan. When you pause, service continues until the end of your billing cycle. When you unpause, you are charged a prorated amount based on the number of billing days remaining. So it would depend on when you went to sea in relation to your 14th billing date.

Oh wow, I noticed the Roam price increase. I just returned from a three-week trip and found that my Verizon Wingard, at $108 a month, worked great, so I didn’t need Starlink. This service can be started and stopped when needed. I was considering using the Starlink 50GB plan as a backup for areas without cell service. I’m guessing you can’t switch to the unlimited plan on the go.

Changing to the 50 GB plan and using Starlink as a backup is a great option and yes you can change to the unlimited Roam plan anytime during your billing cycle and you are just charged the prorated difference of prices for the remaining days in your billing cycle and you receive unlimited data from that point. Going up in price in plan, the change happens immediately and your are charged the prorated difference. Going down in price in plan, the change happens at your next billing cycle. So depending on when you switch plans, it could come out cheaper depending on when you make the change.

@@Somebodysomewheresometime Speeds range from 5 to 15 Mbps, depending on your cell signal strength. I’m currently using LTE, and I imagine 5G would be faster. I’m not sure what the cost of 5G is with Winegard, but they do offer a 5G router and antenna setup for RVs.

I believe you are incorrect on the boating aspect. On the plan, it says Specifically, subscribers can receive Starlink access “up to 12 nautical miles off the coast and for a period of up to 2 months,”

it remains unclear the 12nm aspect… the wording in starlink FAQs can be interpreted two ways (or more) in the context of australia coast.. there are islands that are territorial to australia, that are >12nm from coast… so unclear how where the “12nm” test is applied. certainly i didnt read it that this is only applicable to locations outside my home country?

Many boaters bought the Roam Mobile Unlimited plan for the Priority Data toggle. This feature gave them access to data 12mn offshore. Without this feature many of them will likely return to the cheaper mobile BB alternatives.

Question re proration related to changes of plan. It’s clear that if you switch from the 50$/50GB plan to the roam unlimited, you get charged the incremental $115. What happens if you initially opt in for additional GB at $1/GB. Say you get to 100 GB, so you’ve paid $100 total at that point. And then (in same billing period) decide to switch to the unlimited plan. Is it clear that you'd get charged only $65 to do so or would it still be $115? If you don’t know as of now, appreciate if you can clarify as/when you find out. Thanks

Likely any data over 50 GB that you paid at $1/GB wouldn't count towards the prorating when you switch mid billing cycle, so if you think you might need more data than a total of 165 GB which would be equal to the cost of the Roam Unlimited plan, it is probably best to just change directly to the Roam Unlimited plan once your 50GB is exhausted and just pay the difference. Keep in mind, the longer you make that original 50 GB last though, the cheaper the prorating is when you move to the Roam Unlimited plan since its based on the remaining days in your billing cycle, so your cost could be less than $165 total, yet still have unlimited data for part of the month.

Boaters took a big hit with these changes. One big one is that you can no longer just opt-in to Mobile Priority Data from the Roam Unlimited plan and instead must subscribe to a Mobile Priority Data plan for ocean coverage. The change in terminology around the "2 month trip" also makes us wonder if Starlink may start enforcing this restriction for global users. As a global user, you may need to start transferring your dish to accounts in new countries after you exhaust your 2 months, but we'll have to see how/if that is enforced.

If you currently have your service paused, then your email did not include the price increase because you'll get the higher price when you unpause. Only those with active service received the price increase in the email to notify them it will take effect Oct 10th.

Yes - Canada and the US are now considered different countries. There has always been a 2 month limit in other countries even inside your own continent (just never enforced). So no change there, really.

Technically that $30 bundled mini roam plan was not supposed to be able to paused, but some people have been able to pause and this was likely a bug. Perhaps when you resume, you will only be able to at the $50/month price point. Please let us know so we can track this also.

The $50/50g plan is interesting. I wonder if it will still have a locked in monthly billing cycle? For example, say mines on the 21st and I turn it on on the 7th, do I only pay $25? Do I only get 25gb or do you have 2 weeks to use 50gb?

All Starlink billing is by the month - they do not pro-rate when you pause.

They don't prorate when you pause (as service continues through the end of your billing cycle), but they do prorate when you unpause in the middle of your billing period. So yes if your billing date on the 21st and you unpause on the 7th, you would pay a prorated amount for the remaining days and get all 50GB of data during that time.

You will get the full 50GB of data even if you only activate with only 2 weeks left. Starlink has never shorted you on data when you upgrade plans or unpause.

When we were first offered unlimited internet from space, starlink should have charged 200. A month. And we all would have paid for the ground breaking technology happily. Then starlink could have lowered the price 10.00 every year and we would be soooo happy. Things cost money 💰. It's not food or shelter and complaining doesn't do anything. If it's to high, cancel it.

@@silviuflorescu6838 If you know where you are going, then that allows your Starlink to immediate get service once you set it up, but you can also change the address once you get there, it just may take a little longer to get service. You cannot change the country on residential plans. You would have cancel and transfer the dish to a new account based out of that country. Technically the residential plan cannot be used out of your home country so the 2 month rule doesn't even apply. If you move your dish to an account in that country, then you are in your home country. You can change plans as you see fit depending on your usage. You are not stuck on one plan and you may find times it makes more sense to change. The Mini dish may not be able to be used on residential service though in the US.

In-Motion was already a part of my Mobile-Regional plan. I just had to switch the priority data toggle and pay 2 bucks a gig, because that toggle not only turned on mobile priority data, but also included use in-motion use with my high performance flat kit per the (old now, I'm sure there's a new version after this change) terms of service. So now I simply will be able to not have to use the toggle and pay the 2 bucks a gig. Not sure it's worth 15 bucks more a month to simply not have to toggle that switch, because our in-motion use never equated to more than a half gig or so in a day when my wife worked while I drove. And we only needed to do that a few days a month. But I guess it is a convenience nonetheless to not worry about making sure we turned the priority data back off when we stopped moving. That did cost us extra a couple times because we forgot it.

Correct, you can no longer turn Priority data on/off.. which means in motion use will always be available. But you also won't be able to get priority data when you desire it.

@@MobileInternetResourceCenter Yup. I understand it. It's convenient to not have to worry about the toggle. We're full-time RV lifers; working and traveling the states while taking in the sights. But, I'm truly getting less for my money now for sure. As you say, that's the downside to no contracts. Granted, we don't ever really have a need for the priority data speeds. In places that we may get throttled due to residential plans chewing up all the bandwidth, there's usually good cellular and we have a dual SIM hotspot to take the role in those situations. Thanks for the video. I was curious what all was happening in the change. You seemed to cover it all.
