Hey Lisa, I love your Surface Pro 3 Videos.Great testing! What I would like to know is, is the Surface Pro 3 Keyboard actually worth the price or is a mini bluetooth keyboard like the Anker one a great alternative for the Keyboard. It's also handy doesnt weight much and i think you can carry it arround you and you are much more flexible with it, while using the Surface Pro 3! For example you could lay the keyboard next to you using CTRL+C to copy while you are writing in One Note. I would love to see you making a review about it, comparing a bluetooth keyboard with the Surface Keyboard!

Useful and informative video, but lacking comparison of features for business users. For example, does surface come with full Windows Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) and if it does, how do the apps for Android compare to the full Windows versions? That comparison may even be more important than the PhotoShop one, which was quite superficial anyways. Also, the Surface has a mouse pad in its keyboard and a touch screen; does this put Galaxy note at disadvantage since it only has touch screen and the keyboard didn't have a mouse pad? These are just a few suggestions to improve the comparison. When comparing updates and their frequency, it would be nice to know the size of updates. If updates are large this essentially forces users to buy the more expensive version (also, some apps cannot be run when moved to SD, so you are stuck with running them off native storage).

All Surface Pro's are full PCs, it just looks like a tablet (keep in mind the 'pro' tagged on the end, a Surface RT, the non-pro's, cannot run desktop applications, but all 'pro' devices can)

I'm not sure if it is the processor not keeping up, bad drivers, or Microsoft hobbling OneNote on Android - whatever it is, much patience is required using the pen feature of OneNote on the Note 10.1.

Honestly, I rather have the Samsung. Right now I can get it for about 300 dollars versus Surface Pro 3 which is easily 500 dollars and up. I just need it for note taking, multitasking, and entertainment. I am a student with a simple laptop and don't need something like SP3 because I don't need things like photoshop. I don't get why there is so much hate. If the SP3 fits your needs better that's fine but you don't need to drag down another device.

I really think the best feature I like the most on my 12.2 is that I can use it as my only communication device. When my smartphone died I put my phones Sim card in this one and with my Bluetooth headset I'm using this as my very capable smartphone. I love that I'm only carrying one device now.

Thanks for the review. I was looking at both of these tablets today at my local electronic outlet. You were able to shed plenty of advice on both. I am looking to supplement my collection of MS PC's so the Samsung Note Pro will work for me. Email, surfing the web, reading news etc. If one is looking for a single solution and need the best of both, the MS Surface Pro 3 would definitely be the way to go.

So I used both of these at work and decided to buy the Note after my experiences with each. First, I must say that each device is really nice and can do many things quite well! Overall, key factors in my decision was: 4G LTE, battery life, and the easy connection and sharing options (ap mode, side sync,etc). As an IT Project Manager, this device really keeps up with me when I'm on the go. Like I said before, both devices are great but ultimately I chose this for productivity on the go.

No, they're both PCs (Personal Computers). Just one runs on a bastardized mobile OS (Android), whereas the other runs on a non-bastardized mobile OS (Windows 8 Pro). Note that I called them both mobile OSs, that's 'cause the conventional definition of a mobile OS (bit ly/1me6PK3) is that it can be used on the mobile FORM-FACTORS of a PC (Tablet and SmartPhone). It has nothing to do with the versatility of the OS, that's up to the developer, and Google is slowly making Android as versatile as Windows (I think it's 1/10 the way there). Windows 8 Pro is both a mobile OS AND a desktop OS (bit ly/1oNO4uB), just like the Surface Pro is both a Laptop AND a Tablet. Trying to categorize them to just 1 of the olden days categories is like going against advancement in technology.

Ahmad A. They are both PCs and they are also both not PCs. I see people say this all the time trying to correct those who say PC. It just shows how many people weren't around in the old days to know why we call it a PC. PC was once short for IBM-PC which later became IBM-Compatible PC as other companies began to compete against IBM's brand. Most of us in this time just called it a PC for short. As the Mac vs PC battle which has raged on forever continued and Windows became the dominant OS of the PC brand(replacing DOS or better put, merging with DOS), it later began being known as Windows-based PC or Windows PC. Of course, it still was just called PC for short. So most of us when we say PC refer to branding and not definition.

As you said, the cost of Android apps is considerably better than those on the Surface Pro 3. One of these apps is Kingsoft Office (Now WPS Office) which is very good and, incidentally, is free. Also, I don't care to use a hardware keyboard, and, preferably, really like a Swipe type keyboard, most likely T Swipe Pro, or Swype & Dragon Trial. With either of these I'm actually typing faster than 100 wpm. Also, there are several programs that work very well with capacitive pens on the Android system. One of these is Mobilesheets, and is a sheet music editor, file management tool, setlist creator. This app will simultaneously support the capacitive pen, USB keyboard and wireless Page Turner Pedals or wireless keyboard w/USB Page Turner. Anyway, for the time being, I'm running on a 10.1" tablet, but as soon as I can afford it I do intend to get the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2" tablet. This would be wonderful with a lot of my apps. By the way,I just spotted the 16 gig version of the Note Pro for 349.00 Also, I love the way you do these reviews. I abandoned the PC the years ago, and just love the speed, power, and flexibility of the Android platform. Blessings

Lisa as always top review again. I find since the Notes came out i was hooked. I preordered the Note 1 phone and the 10.1 tablet with drop in keyboard. I own every Note tablet including 12.2 Note Pro. with that said, I spend more time on the 12.2" in tablet mode then my gaming desktop, or the Ultrabook or the monster HP 17" which has the dock, etc. I am ready to buy a Surface 4 or 4 Pro, and Windows Lumina 950XL (pen capable). When Sammy took away the removable battery and the SD slot. I am leaving the Sammy Notes and jumping on the MS Surface. Since I have so many PCs, I just want a tablet with a pen and everything sharing Win 10. Be Well, and keep those great reviews coming. I seldom buy anything gadget wise until I check out your reviews. So please get ahold of the Lumina 950 XL so we know how it stands against the other choices.

+Gatorproof Very interesting. I too liked the Note series of tablets until I bought 2 Windows tablets and found I wasn't using my Note anymore. Admittedly, I only had the Note 8. I am really interested in getting a Windows 10 phone next contract renewal as my Galaxy S5 (which always ran like a dream on KK 4.4.2 and literally never had a crash) runs like a POS with Lollipop 5.0 and I probably won't get the appropriate updates to fix it before my contract renews and I get a new phone. Michael S Surface Pro all the way for sure... if you want the ability to do everything you can on a PC. I certainly want that ability. For those who don't then Android is a great second choice and is way more useful than iOS. There is nothing crap about Android, it does everything you would expect from a mobile OS and more besides. It is just too restricted when you need professional applications and they simply don't exist.

Good review....I have been using my note pro 12.2/LTE version for almost a year.....kills everything I have compared it against, surface 2,3,4 and every iPad due to slick android os...now finally running lolipop. I use hancon office...with full microsoft office compatability for the office (word, powerpoint, excel). I use the quill app for note taking with evernote for handwriting note taking and archiving....have last three years of handwritten daily notes available on the fly. Works great with my NAS and home network, Gmail, Outlook. Very fast....easy to share info and files with samsung's side sync....simply outperforms a pc/laptop for portable computing. I carry it like a note pad....I have three windows laptops and almost never use them since I purchased this device......most iPad users I have compared functionality with are shocked at what is easily possible with this device. Don't believe all of the windows hype....check out the samsung note....you will not be disappointed.

I don't have the Note version, but the SM-T900 (12.2) screen. I realize this review is from 4 years ago, but some folks may still run across it...I did because it was given to me because of that battery/screen blink issue. Then the B wouldn't even factory resell no matter what I did...ridiculous, factory reset twice? F that...Samsung wanted $169.00 to fix it, this in fall 2018 in the U.S., well, I went here on Y.T. and read a bunch of blogs as well. For me the fix did work; used my tech mind in addition to supplement the things I researched...the fix involved opening the dang thing more than once but it is totally fixed. It's a known hardware/motherboard issue. I think the robot/or person, that snapped the battery in place on hundreds of these must have been needing repair work, or if a human...stoned...if I purchased this new, I'd have been very pissed. Not going to trust it with heavy warrior work, but as a supplement to my desk stuff...it'll do, beautiful screen....for now. Have never used a Surface, but worked for MS so it would be the way I'd go to try it out.

Because it doesn't give me millions of results for something I search for, but gives me more relevant results compared to google, on the first page. Also, the results are far more updated than Google. Don't believe me? Try editting a website yourelf and then search for the edited par ton both Google and Bing.

Not even a contest, the SP3 is in a completely different class and more than likely the buyer of a SP3, needs the power of a PC and a true desktop OS. Buyer of a tablet, will just be using for mainly games and social media stuff, with slight productivity use, but nothing a PC can really do. I have the Galaxy Note Pro12.2 & Dell XPS 12 w/full i7 & SSD. I cannot think of a time when I was using my Galaxy and need to switch over to my XPS. I use the same USB 3 thumb stick in both and the Hancom Office Suite let me work on anything from work and switch back and forth. Samsung has really stepped up their game and I would purchase the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 all over again.

NightStalker03 That might be your story, but it is not mine!! I barely touch my Android tablet since I bought a Windows tablet. I need REAL software and the watered down office apps, photo editing apps and video editing apps just don't cut it in Android. Android is fantastic for "playing" and doing very basic things. If you ever achieve a high level of Photoshop, CorelDraw, InDesign, MS Office, etc. then Android is totally frustrating. There is not even ONE photo editor in Android that is usable for proper editing other than Photoshop Touch, but that is a far cry from real Photoshop. I love sketching and checking quick info, etc. on my Android phone and tablet, but that is about all they are good for.

This is a very good review. In summary, it sounds like the Surface 3 is an ultrabook replacement (almost) and the Android is a tablet. Since I already have a nice ultrabook, there really isn't a point in duplicating it. Android it is.

I really like the functionality of the Galaxy Note Pro. It is handy for a lot of the type of tasks that I find myself needing to do while in a conversation, for example, or in a meeting. I use it as a base for getting organized too and finishing up on a desktop. I think it is rather unbalanced to try to compare it point for point to Surface. Surface is running a full desktop OS and if I compare the Surface to my HP Elite-book Mobile Workstation, or even my 27 inch iMac for that matter, that I use for work-horse, Graphic Card & memory intensive animation rendering it would be just stupid. Surface is great for certain things but it too has it's limits when compared to it's own family of computers running a desktop OS. Do I really want to try to edit video or make a Web site on a small screen like Surface anyhow?? Not really. So being able to run Windows OS doesn't really give me $1200 (or more) bucks worth of the while. Just saying. If I go and invest the $1500 for the power I need to actually do anything on the machine then maybe I should just invest a few more bucks and get an Alien 18 that is indeed a scream'n machine in comparison to the Surface..... But I'm sure not going to be lugging either an Alien 18 or my HP Mobile Workstation out into the field unless I'm getting paid super big bucks and I have help for the heavy lifting. So I have to ask myself how much filed work could I get done with a Surface Pro 3, really.

Here in Germany you can get the Samsung for 350€ (433$) and the Pro3 with small i5 cpu, keyboard and 128gig for 950€ (1175$). Not a really fair compare. you use a windows tablet in an other way then a android tablet. For some things the android Tab is enoughth. And the surface is to slow for real PC applications. Rendering Videos, editing pictures etc isn't funny on a windows tab. Write something down etc. stuff like that you can do on android an windows.... I use a high Performance PC at home and a MacBook Pro at work and mobile the 12.2 Tab.

People please note surface Pro 3 are a real PC with a real processor beast Intel I3, Intel I5, and Intel I7 specially this processor which is running at a clock speed of 1.7 GHz with a maximum Turbo frequency of 3.3 GHz, build in a thin magnesium case. Is a great device, if I could afford a second surface pro 3 I will do it, but I have an Ipad air 2 (128gb) WiFi model. If I can sell it and get another Surface pro 3 it would be nice. great review +Lisa

I understand comparing two devices at the same price point, but other than that there is no comparison. Sure they're both touch screen, but outside of that nothing. Surface 2 with Windows RT would've been a better comparison. I'd take a Surface Pro 3 over an Android tablet any day.

The Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is still being sold at around $650 (more or less) in most websites like Amazon for the 64 GB version. That said, I'd rather get the SP3 with its cheapest configuration ($799) than Samsung.

the only issue for me would be virus software , an added cost and the endless windows updates for the SP3. The SP3 is a superior device, but overkill for my needs.

As much as I love using my Note, I'm rather dissapointed that the art apps aren't nearly as good as they are on an iPad or other tablets. I mean it's fully capable of doing so. :/

***** IPads aren't nearly up for the task of desktop art applications. Even, if it did have programs, and the processor, to rival a desktop, your art is limited to death. No serious artist wants to draw with capacitive pen, decent pen input or at least access to a pen tablet with some pressure levels is a standard to digital artists.

Soccercrazyigboman Such as? Can you elaborate? I know you cant run things like Photoshop and the like but why not use a desktop with 2 24in monitors instead. You can argue that laptops aren't productivity machines when you compare to a desktop with large monitors.

For All Who Complain About the Lack of Apps on SP3, I have News: you can download Google Apps onto your surface using the BlueStacks app. So how's that. It's a PC, Duh. Unlike it's previous failure, the surface RT. ITS ability to download & run just about anything is its sole triumph over any other tablet.

While I definitely prefer Windows 8.1 experience over any mobile OS including Android and find the form factor of Surface Pro 3 quite appealing, I must admit that some comments are a bit too subjective. First of all, the price is not exactly the same: it only gets relatively similar, if you compare the top configuration of Note 12.2 and the cheapest configuration of Surface Pro 3. What do we get out of the top configuration of Note 12.2? We get the Snapdragon 800, that makes all of the Android apps and games fly, even with the laggy TouchWiz on top, we get plenty of storage (Android OS and Apps do not require that much space, so 32 Gb is ok) with affordable possibilities of expansion without any compromise on speed, and we get LTE/3G module, that can get you online literally anywhere. And what do we get out of the cheapest config of Surface Pro 3? We get an Ultra Low Voltage i3, which, while being definitely faster in theory and on benchmarks, will NOT get you a smooth enough experience in desktop Windows 8.1, especially - in powerful productivity applications, that so many people like to emphasize on. We get a 64 Gb SSD, which is just ridiculous, considering how much space Windows 8 occupy and how much space is needed for the mentioned productivity apps. Yeah, you can use memory cards as well, but in this case it's a hell of a compromise, considering the Read/Write speed difference between SSD and a memory card. So, in the end, to get a satisfactory Surface Pro 3 experience, you need to go for i5 and at least 128 Gb SSD. A-ha! And here we get a several hundred dollar difference, don't we? Also, the battery life worth mentioning as well. Not only you get a significant difference already in casual usage (9-10 hours Note 12.2 VS 6.5-7 hours SP3), but also you have to remember, that SP3 will be able to pull out such a battery life only if you use Mobile Windows Apps or some processor-light text editing. Whenever you launch some productivity desktop Windows application, you will get you battery dying several times faster. My Dell XPS 12 with Haswell, which is actually a "real energizer bunny" (thanks for the nice phrase, Lisa) in comparison to SP3, demonstrates that quite well.

Ruslan Serdjuk I can't be bothered commenting on all of your points, so I will mention one. The i3 DOES give a smooth experience in Windows 8, a lot smoother than you could imagine!! I bought an el cheapo $385 HP Omni Pro tablet with a Bay Trail Intel Atom Z3770 "mobile processor" (which is half the performance of a Core i3) to see if I liked Windows in a small form factor. It is as smooth as silk and is way smoother than my Galaxy Note 8 tablet and my Galaxy S4 phone! I am amazed how smooth it is. Stutter and lag simply do not exist. Obviously, I wouldn't open and work with 20 layer Photoshop files on it, but 16MP images with two or three layers are fine, A colleague of mine recently bought an Asus Core i3 very low end laptop and swapped out the hard drive for an SSD and it flies.

Both of these devices are extremely priced. I seriously doubt they will cell many. Neither one of these devices comes with a keyboard, nor does any one of them has a keyboard dock accessory that comes with an internal battery to extend the battery life of the device which would make the device that much more appealing despite the insanely high price.

The Surface Pro 3 is simply the best device on the market. For the money, you are getting more features and access to more apps and programs. People. It is an ultra book. That does it all with the convenience of using it as a tablet.

The Surface Pro 3 is the top dog of all tablets, including the iPad. The versatility and power are unmatched and it will only get better with W10 and upcoming hardware upgrades. Cost is the only drawback though.
