The lane splitting between the m.2 slots and PCIe was the first thing I noticed as well. It's a really weird design choice to prioritize storage over the GPU rather than going PCIe Gen 4 for the other 3 slots through the chipset like how MSI does it.
@guycxz
@guycxz Жыл бұрын
Well you need to dedicate 4 slots for the GPU now, so you might as use that real estate. It's not as though GPUs come near utilizing and entire 16Xgen4 link, so you could just take the extra bandwidth elsewhere. That does rely on people using newer than 6000/30 series GPUs if they use 3-4 m.2 SSDs, and I reckon these folk have the money and willingness to buy a 4090/7900XT. It's odd, but will probably work just fine for most people. The expense of it is a bit odd. But then, this board looks to be aimed at 4090 buyers with 4 m.2 SSDs so selling it at a premium won't be an issue.
@buggylama

We will see what happens with the next generation of GPUs. Maybe they will not need more than PCIE 4 x 8 connectivity, but I am with you. It is interesting that only the flagship (and halo) X670E motherboards offer one PCIE 5 x4 from the CPU and 3 PCIE 4 x 4 divided among the two chipsets. The cheaper X67E motherboards, give you two PCIE 5 x 4 M.2 drives, and two PCIE 4 x4 M.2 drives, but if you use the second PCIE 5 M.2 drive, it cuts the GPU's lanes (whether they be PCIE 3, 4 or 5) from x16 to x8. This means that you can only use three of your four M.2 drives without cutting your GPU's PCIE lanes in half to x8. The motherboard I currently have my eye on is the ASRock X670E Taichi because it doesn't cut into the GPUs lanes. It has one PCIE 5x4 M.2 and 3 PCIE 4x4 M.2 drives. The PCIE 4x4 M.2 drives are split between the two chipsets. Also, they have a really good block diagram of this in their manual and it is relatively affordable compared to say the MSI Ace which is $200 more. It also has a cool looking PCIE 5 M.2 cooler with a little fan on it.

You see, seeing an integrated wifi means there is also bluetooth there. And having bluetooth is nice - Xbox controllers, headsets etc, its nice to have. Also with the wifi is - When your main internet is dead its nice you can just connect to a hotspot from a phone and finish the work you had/have urgently. And manufacturers recognized that. I have z390 aorus ultra and it has wifi, and i had to use it few times - And bluetooth is a nice thing to have without relying on addin cards or usb dongles that suck ass.

It also makes more sense to just have PCIe slots for more flexibility in what SSDs you can use. I like enterprise SSDs since I just like good SSDs but they don't come in M.2 format much anymore and it's very hard to adapt an M.2 to the U.2 or SFF-8639 connector without some really jank adapters.

'Thanks Gigabyte for sending me this board, I shall now repeatedly tell >90% of people not to buy this board". 🙂 One thing not mentioned here (not usually covered), which I'm seeing conflicting information on, is whether the cooler/socket backplate is removable, providing compatibility with most AM4 coolers. DeBauer (unless I misunderstood) found that the ILM screws into it, but didn't previously and therefore coolers which require their own back-plate aren't compatible because the ILM won't screw into them. However, Wendell said his AsRock was fine (though may have been a misunderstanding between us in comments).

This is a board configuration I appreciate, as a storage array enthusiast, granted my next upgrade won't be until at least the ~2024 cycle. The answer I would need though, is whether upcoming GPUs are actually saturating the gen.5 x16 worth of bandwidth. Would have to run something like intel pcm-iio to figure that out. If the x16 bandwidth on the lanes is going to waste on the GPU, and they don't need more than x8, then I'd rather have the lanes assigned to discrete M.2 devices, and yeah, slotting a bifurcation card is kind of meh for gpu cooling. The 5V regulator may be an approach they're practicing in anticipating a migration to ATX12VO?

That GPU bandwidth isn’t really necessary, because even x8 slots had more than enough for PCIe 4.0, so a PCIe 5.0 slot has even more bandwidth to spare. Those M.2 slots are going to be super convenient, because most folks are going with SSD storage only, and M.2 drives are the best when it comes to speed with NVMe and the lack of ugly SATA cables that restrict airflow, which is going to be more critical with the CPUs that run in these boards.

Also Renesas doesn't list the 105a power stages anymore, just the 90a, they were likely the exact same product but they didn't want to get caught out lol.

tl:dr: unless you're doing high-end OC stuff is using a B-series mobo a bottleneck/poor quality/failure risk on curent/next gen hardware? I note that you recommend B series as much as the X series for general gaming use? I struggle to work out what is a 'good' mobo - I notice a lot of differing opinions on it. Especially the idea that B-series boards should not be paired with current gen/next gen hardware as it is limiting? As an example, I tried to put a 5800x3d build together at my local computer superstore (Australia) together with a B series board - I am on an '17 Z370P i8700k build - and was told this: 'Mainboard: You’re running high end hardware - a budget board typically isn’t a great fit. These parts will all technically get along, but the extra stability that the higher end boards provide is beneficial - even if it only means the machine lasts longer.' I think it's upsales exaggerating but I don't want to hamstring myself - esp. with the 13thGen/AM5 etc. boards being a significant price increase.

And as usual the motherboard manufacturers prioritize m.2 instead than making pcie slots and just giving a darn pcie adapter

why is every MB maker crazy about M.2 slots. how many M.2 disks do you need???? But that limits PCIe slots where you can plug other cool devices. even M.2 can go to PCIe clot with a raiser but WHY so many M.2 slots??? waste of everything

Whats up Zoid? I have a "burnt-out" X470 Crosshair 7. I think I broke it by drawing too much current from the front panel USB port. It's just sitting in my closet doing nothing and you could probably fix it and resell it or whatever.

Buildzoid or any buildzoid watchers I am in big need of help: Brand new Pc 32gb ram X570 rog strix-f mobo I turn the pc on, all the lights of the ram cpu cooler motherboard keyboard and mouse all come on, it boots to the screen that says “press f2 or del to enter bios” and it will not let me enter the bios I tried 6 diff keyboards, mixture of gaming, office and old keyboards and yeah it will not enter bios no matter how much I press f2/del. It doesn’t do anything. Any idea at all what this could be? I can’t find anything for this specific issue on google or KZbin.
