Mock Medical School Interview: Do's and Don'ts!

I reviewed this interview for my son. I have been a Physician for 25 yrs. The candidate did extremely well on his interview and appeared to be honest and showed vulnerability and honesty when needed and had no qualms in admitting it. Biggest hallmark for a future doctor not to be delusions about one's knowledge and strengths but have humility to accept drawbacks also.I am not sure about suit and legs crossed but the interviewer had more "Umms" then the candidate himself.My opinion - selected .

Yeah, she tries to attack him on his "poor" communication skills. He was great. I was very impressed at how calm he was in front of the whole audience. He started sweating at the end, but to me that's normal. Also her questions were pretty dumb. Pretty much lazy questions.

SuprSilvr You can't really be upset with an interviewer as they probably interview plenty of people & is probably confident in the mechanism they've developed to weed out our funnel in what they're looking for. I've had tough interviews & have also been complimented on my (same)interview. This can also be a good way for some people to realize that this may not be for them or that they just did not want it bad enough up until that moment. Resilience can always be appreciated.

Oh god this woman almost made me throw up. Eric's sociability and communication skills, which are pretty vital for the interview and for the application as a whole, is leagues better than her's.

Well said. He can actually build relationships better than her. It's obvious she's a socially awkward robotic type of person. You can tell by her lack of expression, and monotonous demeanour. In the real world of medical practice, guess which type actually builds better patient-doctor bonds? He did lack specificity and focus though. He was not prepared, obviously, and if he simply hones the scope of his focus and is more concise while sitting more formally, but speaking candidly and providing discrete examples relevant to the question -- he'll do just fine.

I think they need someone else conducting the mock interview. She didn't seem very interested in explaining how you can think of your answers, and she didn't notice anything good about what he did. To me she didn't seem like she had very much experience, and seemed a little arrogant in her body language, facial expression and tone of voice. Sure, she gave pointers in areas he could improve upon, but to be honest, her attitude and standoff-ish approach was off-putting, and I think she should be someone looking for good aspects of the interview as well, which she didn't seem to care to do. He seemed friendly and made good eye-contact, which are important things in an interview. This is just my opinion though, because I'm guessing these people are paying money for this mock interview, and it'd be nice for them to have a good experience worth what they're paying.

I agree with a lot of her comments - critiquing advisor, crossing legs, no suit, not answering questions, etc. To say "she seemed mean" isn't really a fair critique to make of her - some interviewers purposely come off cold to see how the candidate handles themselves. Would you rather have her be honest and actually help or try to make him feel good? To me, she actually seemed she was doing a good job making the conversation flow. However, she seriously couldn't come up with a positive about his interview? It would be almost impossible for someone not to do SOMETHING good, and to not give him any good feedback is really bad for his confidence.

An actual feedback needs to start with positivity and ends with positivity while having the negativity in the middle, however, the interviewer was so rude on the way she made her feedback especially since it wasn't the most formal and suggested way on making a beneficial feedback. Besides, such strong feedback shouldn't have been thrown publicly in front of the audience and put the student in such a critical situation. I hope that the interviewers give more reasonable feedbacks.

I can't actually believe Kaplan have posted this as a way of advertising this course... I'm a Medical Student, yes Medical School interviews are tough but what this setting has done to this poor guy is probably to set him back several years not build his confidence which he needs as well as sitting down and mapping out things like why he chose that University and what he's gained out of his experiences... For this woman to give him no constructive feedback and essentially laugh at him in front of an audience is quite shocking to be honest, if I were him I'd be wanting a refund...

Hey Andrew, I wanted to provide you with some context on our mock interview video. I'm sure you of all people understand that medical school interviewing is a tough process, so we wanted to provide students with every scenario that could possibly occur, and how to handle them. We did this mock interview several years ago with a pre-health advisor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Eric, who was part of the Kaplan faculty and graciously accepted the role! Eric was asked ahead of time to make a number of common interview mistakes, so we could showcase the kinds of things that students often do wrong without really realizing it. In Eric's case, one of the big things he wanted to show was how students can provide too short of answers that don't provide a whole lot of detail. Hopefully this provides you with some explanation on what we were trying to accomplish with this mock interview. We always appreciate feedback, especially from those who have been through it!

I think her feedback was necessary and truthful. An interviewer is not always going to be relaxed and personable. So I think it's the interviewee's responsibility to practice how to answer such questions with details, passion, and confidence while being put under pressure.

That could have made him more comfortable and open up more about his "pppasssssiooonnn" if she wasn't feeling it. Great for any career development course. One question that I have found very "filtering" in interviews is: What would you want your evaluate/boss say about you one year from now? It is usually used as the last question of the interview.

With all her negativity I have to say the worst answer was the one when he talked about he would keep doing the same thing he is doing if he didn't get into medical school. You have to make the interviewer feel bad about not selecting you, but not coming off as desperate or you won't apply again aka lack of passion. My sample answer, "I would continue to volunteer at the hospital if I didn't get into medical school, but I would have to get a higher paying job that will probably take up more of my time. I definitely will apply again to medical schools, but depending upon what happens with my fiance and my job I might have to put medical school on the backburner".

A few things I noticed here. Try to avoid "Uh's" and "Um's." They can hurt. When asked where you see yourself, don't make statements that imply you have experienced more than you have. Make sure to know your app very well and be able to reflect the critical information in a concise and meaningful manner. Show introspection and motivation well.

It's been three years since I watched this video and I have interviewed already for a few schools. Although I don't think the interviewee had very strong answers, I think Miss Carlson-Bryant's critiques do not reflect advice that I have gotten that represent from my mentors and peers. I believe her advice reflects her own institution's standards for a candidate badly. I'm sorry Kaplan but bad advice leads to bad candidates, and you did not do any favors to anyone in this video.

Med student here. This is a good example of what NOT to do in a med school interview. 1- He did not answer the questions directly. 2- too much rambling i.e. his answers were way too vague. When you answer the questions, you want to explain it to the evaluator in a way that he/she will understand clearly what you are trying to say with specific examples. 3- too much "you know". This annoys a lot of people. This is definitely not a good interview.

The reason everyone discredits her is not because of the criticism. Being told your faults in grim detail can be useful and constructive. But when the host asked her for anything at all that the applicant had done right, and she can't even come up with a single thing, that's an enormous red flag that she has no idea what she's doing.

***** You seem to think that telling him (and the audience) about what he has done right is not helpful. Yes, he needs work and criticism is great, but if someone does something right, acknowledge it so he can continue to do it right down the road! If you tell someone (as she just did by failing to mention EVEN A SINGLE working positive about him) that their entire interview was terrible, then, if people actually follow all of your advice (which, in this case, I strongly doubt as I feel she more than completely discredited herself), they will end up changing everything! Including stuff that may well have been done very well! One of his positives, for example, was his warmth and confidence (not his casualness, which she mentioned as a negative). Yet in failing to mention this, people (those dumb enough to listen to her at least) might come away with the impression that being cold, austere, detached, uptight, or less confident is somehow more optimal. This could not be further from ideal advice!! I loved the part where she was like "I can't think of a lot of positive things and I feel bad" while smiling and faking a laugh. How unprofessional is that? Do you want the audience to have zero trust in you or what?! Thank God she's an adviser and not a med school interviewer; I would hate to have her interviewing me!!

To the Interviewer/Lady: I beg to differ, could you not find anything positive to say about him? You harped about his negatives, his inchoate approach towards pursuing medicine, but do you realize how negative you were? Laughing out loud when the host asked her to point out positives was extremely unprofessional and immature in itself. It was a demeaning laugh, which goes beyond just trying to take the bull by its horns and say "I honestly find it hard to see anything positive". That would have been better than her nervous laugh. Inconsiderate ! Also the interviewer had an "extreme negative/nervous energy" radiating,a nd the guy actually made her look like a tyro at what she does, vis a vis what he was doing.. How ironic :) She in no way sported the commanding, smooth, interviewer avatar, instead was extremely self-righteous and stern. Yes, the posture, suit etc. were interviewing 101 from a google search. You seem to be taking a purfunctory approach, totally divorced from reality. If anything, I'd say the guy was being himself, smart and like someone here mentioned- shows his vulnerabiliy, while the interviewer was sticking to a text book approach on "how to intervew with utter prejudice". You need to watch Conrad Fishers " How to land a residency spot" on youtube. Its a Kaplan production as well. You see how Dr Fisher is fluid in reading an applicant's psyche and was not dogged by "what the applicant lacks", instead concentrating on what he had to offer. He talks about making offers to applciants who have failed even. Your thoughts about pre-med advisors, answering to the point etc. were good. The million dollar doubt of an applicants "intent" on wanting to pursue medicine as a career seems to haunt and torment interviewers so much that there is an unreal expectancy from students to have a "picture perfect" answer- I call it conventional wisdom. This topic has been blown out of proportion. Though, I'm being critical, I'm not trying to put down the interviewer in an unreasobale way. It is dissapointing to see her totally oblivious to the honesty in his tone. Honesty needs to take precedence over your perception of how well he/she must fit into your definition of "good enough reason for pursuing medicine". His experience in the pediatric facility was already "wow, good stuff dude!" It is when you look at forums that you realize applicants already admitted into medical school start becoming revenue accountants. The system forces them to think that way perhaps, but I gather the most important skill to develop is a "poker face", and stick to "conventional wisdom". Just saying Kaplan, just saying- because if Lady Gaga concurs, who are we to .......? But I still beg to differ Miss Gaga, and feel conventional wisdom may help an applicant reach his goal, but not his true potential. You gotta be honest, and stick to it, if one college does not see it, the next one will. And Gaga, I still love you!

This woman is a piece of work. But some of her comments were on point like him not answering the questions. Overall though he was pretty confident not a bad mock interview

When we are constantly coached by these large firms on how to answer questions, won't we all start answering the same? And won't the adcoms be clued in to that? Or are they blind and ignorant? I can't help but to think that the best way to succeed is to be your best, most honest self.

I learned so much from Eric, he did well and I would act like him during an interview. The girl was hypocritical and annoying tbh And when she asked why he would want to go to medical school he smiled and his eyes lit up, yet she says there's no passion? smh
