Students in the Elementary Explore Program participated in a Mock Trial on Tuesday in the fictional case of State v. Jack Griffin, based on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The trial was to determine whether Jack was guilty of breaking and entering and theft. This is the fifth annual Explore mock trial, which is a collaboration with the O’Keeffe Pre-Law Studies program. Seventeen high school and 28 elementary students collaborated on this special project which teaches critical thinking, analysis, and verbal reasoning skills.
Explore students analyzed crime scene details, gathered evidence, and presented a case before Judge Max Toledo, ’23. Guest witnesses included Elementary Principal, Adam Miller as Big Daddy Weave (aka the Giant) and first grade teacher, Christine Kovachik and Mrs. Dreamweaver (aka Mrs. Giant). Jack was found not guilty of breaking and entering, but guilty of theft.
"It has been an amazing journey of discovery, critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. I am so proud of all the students' hard work, their motivation, and dedication to the process!" - Kimberly Horne, Explore Program Teacher
