I get that this is comedy, but in case anyone took his point seriously: Immigrants come here because its a rich country with plenty of services, and high wages compared to the places they came from. Historically, it has also been because (despite what our tendency towards self-deprecation makes us say) we have a good culture which others actually admire, and many wanted to be a part of it.

@@jaquieh6857 Sure, it's a comedy. But it's also a vehicle for establishing and reinforcing preferred opinions. In this case for instance, just quietly reminding everybody who the Good People and the Bad People are. The best propaganda works this way, it's very effective. That's why the middle class took over comedy in the early 80s. They knew how to use it for much more than just telling jokes.
@kjamison59512 жыл бұрын
@@ian_b Alternative comedy with its roots in 1979 and developing throughout the 80’s usurped the bigoted, misogynistic and racist humour of the working means’ clubs and the gentler comedy of vaudeville. I enjoyed its original anarchic style but the overtly political rhetoric is anathema to me. Satire is fine in a society that can laugh at itself.

@@ghostmadlittlemiss More adorable than having to drive past a four star hotel full of migrants to a job in a town I had to move to 180 miles from where I was street homeless because the council refused to help me because they "will only help you if you cannot speak english and there is nobody else who can help you." To get off the streets and help with housing? By help I mean a council flat nobody else wanted... Yes, I believe what I have been through the past few years...
@ghostmadlittlemiss3 жыл бұрын
@@gthbtn Have you ever considered becoming an author? Maybe then you could do some good with your fiction, instead of spreading hate. Although you might want to work on making your stories more realistic in future. My family’s in the hotel business. No owner of a 4 star hotel is going to take an immigrant contract. Not because they think there’s anything wrong with them but because the council wouldn’t pay them even remotely what the rooms are worth. If you’re on the star system, you don’t have any shortage of bookings so why would you give your rooms away for less than their value? And secondly, no council worker is stupid enough to open themselves up to a discrimination lawsuit by claiming that they won’t help you unless you don’t speak English. And I’ve met some pretty damn stupid ones over the years. Nationality is a protected class. If they don’t want to help you, they give you some bullshit reason that doesn’t open them up to legal action. They’ve got no desire to lose their job and be on the other side of the desk so they’d never claim anything like that. Try to find something better to do with your time, instead of making the lives of people who have even less than you worse. Go after the actual villains, the rich and powerful who make the laws. They want you to hate other poor people rather than them. Don’t make their lives any easier than they already are.
@gthbtn3 жыл бұрын
@@ghostmadlittlemiss The evidence of hotels being block booked by the government is well publicised and a quick search on here will show you videos of people visiting them and exposing what's going on... As for the comment, it was made on the last of four visits to the council for help. I guess they just wanted to make it perfectly clear to me to stop bothering them as I was not going to be helped. If you don't believe me then that's your choice. As for a homeless bloke being able to bring a discrimination lawsuit? Well, thank you for your confidence in me... Perhaps if I had that back then, along with the ability to launch a legal battle I'd be able to rent somewhere private?!
@ghostmadlittlemiss3 жыл бұрын
@@gthbtn I’m not doubting block bookings happen. But they don’t happen in 4 star hotels, they happen in run down, no star hostels. The owners of a 4 star hotel would never allow the rooms to go for the rates the council would pay when they could make much more than that on the open market. It would be nice if they did but it’s a business, not a charity. And no, I don’t believe you as you’ve already proved you’re either lying or very badly misinformed over the hotel situation. Again, whether they thought you could sue them or not, they’d make up an excuse that wouldn’t open them up to legal action. For all they know, you could get legal aid (v difficult, I know, I’ve tried it) or go to the local press and stir up trouble for them. Why open themselves up to that kind of risk when they have a whole laundry list of bs lies they could choose from? (I’m not much of a fan of local councils either)
