In the 80's, I sold many pairs of Celestion SL-600 with stands and most were paired with a good powered subwoofer ( 12" bass driver). The subwoofer added what was lacking in the SL-600, deep bass. I bought a pair of Celestion Ditton 66 Series II during that period and still enjoy the pure sound of music that they deliver with a Kenwood Basic M2 ( 220 W/ch ) driving them. Thanks for the great review and the memories, take care.

I currently own SL6Si and SL600, and I am about to purchase the Ditton 66 but they are humongous. Does the Ditton 66 sound better than the SL600?
@micheltremblay47743 жыл бұрын
@@ysk249 SL600 sounded good but my ears bought the 66 which were more natural sounding and I did not want the SL600 on stands with 3 kids. They never toppled the 66 that weight around 30 KG each. The 66 were the BBC reference monitors because of its excellent midrange and tweeter speakers.

I used to sell those Celestions back in the day, and I agree that they are both outstanding speakers. Whenever we demoed the SL6 Si we always gave them lots of power, but also teamed them up with tube pre-amps and or hybrid power amps to take away the shrillness at higher volumes you mentioned. As you mentioned they need to be placed on heavy substantial stands, but keeping in mind that the tweeters should be elevated to slightly above ear level while listening for best results. Celestion made matching stands for the Si, but I'm not sure about the S. One thing you might want to consider is trying the woofers from the Si in the S cabinets. I'm willing to bet that the pair of SL6S with the Si woofers will sound better than the stock Si do now. Just my 2 cents.
@phononerd69472 жыл бұрын
The SL range of Celestion was and is amazing, also to modern standards. I have personally never heard the SL6S, but have heard the SL6, SL6SI, SL600, SL600SI and SL700. The SL6 and SL600(SI) have the copper tweeters and sound significantly different from the SL6SI and SL700. The copper tweeters have, to my ears, a more emotional tone to them and are more comfortable being played loudly. Of the whole bunch, I like the SL6SI the least (but I still really like it). The SL700 is technically the best speaker. Best soundstage, definitely the best bass and also the most neutral tone. But regarding the presentation of emotion in a voice, the sl6 and 600(si) have the edge for me. As a little advice to your problem with the woofer. I think the woofers of the 6s and 6si are identical, or at least very similar (they're the same as the 700, but differ form the 6 and 600(si)). So you might just be able to replace them with the ones from the 6si. Otherwise, google carpwrangler in the uk. He still has quite some spares laying around, but he's rounding up his business. Best of luck!

For me, the real deal was the SL600 (basically an SL6 in an Aerolam cabinet, revolutionary at the time). They were my reference speakers for several years while I was reviewing for hi-fi mags. They weren't easy to drive but it was about more than sheer power. In fact, the best sound I ever had from them was with Mark Levinson 25W class A monoblocks (a bit of a price mismatch I'll grant). Never had a problem with the bass drivers, but a new Sugden amp I'd been sent for review quickly fried the metal tweeters.

Celestion/Ditton built some very good speaker systems in the 1970's/80's. As for audio faux pas, I always turn down the volume before making any changes. Also turn the amp on after powering up other components (EQ, Range Expander, CD player, turntable and tape decks. Amp is always turned off first too. This "safety feature" has worked well for me for over forty years. Really dig your photos of the UK audio scene way back when. Swell video, my friend.

There are people who can rebuild your drive units. You need to send both of them and they will weigh the parts. The cones, the coil formers and the coils. They will rewind the coils and set the spiders so that the coils run in their gaps precisely. I live in London and there is a loudspeaker repairer here who does this type of repair all the time. You need to have both drivers restored at the same time so that they are matched. I heard SL6 in a studio and they were incredibly good.
@MODAC3 жыл бұрын
Not cost effective to ship them to the UK for repair as it would cost more than they’re worth. Actually Susan the speaker lady had another go at it and corrected the problem. Now they both sound fantastic and she only charged me $40 total! Thanks for your comment.

A Company called Wimslow Audio in England used to be the place for new drive units for Celestial SL speakers. I hope this helps. I owned both the original SL6 and the SL6 S and enjoyed them immensely, but they tend to limit what music you listen too, you end up playing stuff you know they excel at reproducing and avoiding the stuff they don't. I bought some Rogers LS6A and they were wonderful all rounders and I wish I'd never parted with them. I now own a pair of 1973 KEF Concertos that have been modified with updated crossovers and newer tweeters.

Power amplifiers fail often enough that not including some form of protection is absolutely irresponsible design. The typical end-of-life behavior for a power transistor is a short circuit, which on these Adcom amps will send straight DC to your speakers and that's before we even get to this guy's failure mode which appears to be a DC offset from his source components. There are simply too many foreseeable events to leave the output to chance. These amps sound great but are notorious speaker killers. I STRONGLY recommend external fusing sized for your speakers as a minimum level of protection if you have one of these Adcom amps or better still, the addition of a DC detection circuit using a relay. As for Schiit, they need to fix their stability issues if the turn on squealing issue is a characteristic of their device. The amp is clearly unstable when the tubes are cold, which is rather odd since gain is low when the cathode isn't hot. I'm not sure what's going on there.
@JD-lk7im4 жыл бұрын
You're correct.. I think it's the switch mode supply squealing in agony at cold startup.

Try the Celestion 3 Mark 2's (they are the ported version of the Mark 1's) and you will be astounded at what they produce! I have them on my second system driven by a modest 25 wpc Cambridge AM1 amplifier and that is all the power you need to get the best out of these.

These speakers are great. I have 2 pairs of the SL6S and one of the DL6. The DL6 is "very good" while the SL6S's are outstanding. Will echo everyone else who has these and confirm they need power, I'd say at least 100 good watts. I tried them with a T-amp which was I think 60 watts and they sounded extremely subdued, lifeless. It wasn't something you'd need to be an audiophile to hear, it would be obvious to anyone. I'm using them with an 80 Hz high pass filter and the results can be astonishing. Highly recommend using a high pass filter with these. I have one spare bass unit but I just can't part with it - maybe keep an eye on ebay for a woofer that someone is selling for a decent price (they do show up once in a while.) Make sure it has the chamfered metal fittings (SL6S and SL6Si use the same woofer units.) The main difference between the 6S and 6si besides the badge on the grill, I remember reading it was something about the crossover but I can't remember the details now.
@MODAC3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Susan fixed the other woofer, so both are good now. Interesting idea about the high pass filter. Thanks.
@DNForeverable3 жыл бұрын
@@MODAC Oh good news. They are -3db at 75hz so for both efficiency and response using them with an 80hz filter and (two) subs has been great for me. The Parasound 2100 preamp solves this by having fixed 80hz+ outputs in addition to full range, and then the sub outs also have a crossover knob on the back which in its default position is 80hz lowpass. I realize there are other ways to achieve this such as digital crossovers etc. but no experience with them. If they're used in a small enough room, and if totally full range bass isn't a priority, I guess it wouldn't matter as much but you'd still be freeing the amp from trying to push the lower frequencies. The SL6S manual gives a maximum power rating of 120 watts and recommends an amp with 25-120 watts. Outstanding speakers especially with violins & other "natural" sounds like vocals, but I use them for everything including movies and they do great. Thanks for the video.

There are two Celestion woofers available on ebay right now. All SL series woofers are the same except the SL has no mounting ears (outer plate holds it in place), the SL12 is 16 ohms. and the 700SE, 100 and 300 are longer throw with a vented magnet. All would work perfect except the SL12 woofer. I love these speakers and have 13 sets (whole line). One set is the SL6S brand new and still in the box. I'll have to bust them out and do my own comparison to the SL6Si. Also have the 100's and my son has the 300's. I listen to them way more than my B&W N802's and Matrix 805's. always turn the power amp off first, wait 2 min, then turn the pre amp off

On my vintage Harmon Kardon, I must have the speaker switch to OFF first because of the burst it dumps at the output when you cut power first.
