Great news! Cobalt 8X is still my desert island synth (in big part due to fantastic keybed), and I hope Modal will not only release new products, but keep updating existing ones as well.

I’m so glad to hear about this!! I was very doubtful anyone would be willing to buy Modal Electronics with all that debt they owed, so I made a backup of their software I had a few months ago (at least what runs on Windows & macOS + the VST for DAWs). Maybe now we will see their CARBON8 product that they tried to launch months ago. I LOVE my 5S! Keep us updated Scott & thanks!!

Can we just ask whoever owns Modal now to make firmware updates available over standard MIDI (like literally everybody else) and not solely reliant on their app? It's crazy to have synths becoming bricks as soon as usb stops working or the app is not supported for whatever reason.

As a proud owner of a 002 for many years I would love to see Modal continue as a going concern. In reality, only a few weeks ago the administrators reported that all of the employees have been laid off so this option is therefore unlikely. However, the administrator acknowledged that the book value of the goodwill and IPR attaching to the software developed by the company is substantial. The sale of that entirely makes sense by the administrator and validates Scott’s source that a new buyer may be closing in. It is interesting that a hardware manufacturer may have been saved to some extent by the value of the software it developed to support their hardware. Modal were on to something good and hopefully a new buyer will see a reborn Modal flourish. Focusrite would probably be a good match and Modal would join a great synthesiser family of Novation, Sequential and Oberheim. EDIT: Not Focusrite but announced as Alltronics Holdng Ltd. Any thoughts on this acquisition?

So glad to hear , I use them with my Roli seaboard best hardware for MPE midi. I have argon8, cobalt8, skulls se and cobalt5s. Which is great for MPE and also portable the app is excellent. Soo happy🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤

We'll find out soon who the new owners are. My guess/wish is Novation/Focusrite, they could use Modal's DSP expertise to breathe life back into the Novation synth products pipeline.

Your opinion of the build quality certainly does not match the wonky knobs and difficult to dial in reality of my 37 key Cobalt. the only good build is the case and the Fatar keybed. The rest of it feels like junk with its jerky display and overall soullessness. Having said that I do love the sounds they can make...

The new owner is the Chinese company that did all their builds which makes a good bit of sense. Staffing was already down to bare bones. My guess is support will continue outsourced to a call center and return/repair/swap will continue to be through dealers under warranty ultimately handled at the factory with the new owner. Who knows which (if any) "executives" and designers are still there; one or two programmers for firmware updates/fixes, but that could be totally in-house at Alltronics now. The may well have bought just current inventory and IP with a reduced creditor payback structure and ZERO Modal employees retained. Simply clearing existing kit does not seem like a good enough reason to buy. I would love to see a full size with 2 "engines" onboard and consolidated interface where you could load 2 "layers" from any of the 3 models. Around $1500 that would be a compelling synth IMHO.

I am glad to hear that MODAL are supposedly saved...but this was 5 months ago and no website is accessible and nothing has been heard. I too love the sounds of their synths but I have to vigorously disagree with Scott about the Modal App. The Skulpt version GREATLY improves the otherwise crazy illegible hardware interface but it crashes or constantly has to reinstall on Windows....it appeared to work on Ipad for a brief while but know does not. As for the Cobalt GUI....Its utterly terrible....though stable ...it is even MORE IMPOSSIBLE to read than the rediculous front pane of the Synth. Everything about the saving or importation of presets and the layout is mindblowingly stupid..and I have to wear reading glass a put my face 12 inches from the monitor to see the print ...it makes me want to put an axe thru the synth. I wont ever by another unless they correct this ...its beyond belief they could be so stupid.
