"Have to" is a semi-modal or semi-auxiliary verb phrase that requires the auxiliary verb "have" followed by the infinitive "to." It behaves more like a normal verb phrase than a modal verb:"I have to study for my exams."Although "have to" expresses necessity or obligation similar to modal verbs like "must" or "should," it does not have all the grammatical properties of modal verbs, such as the ability to form questions and negatives without the use of auxiliary verbs. Therefore, while "have to" serves a similar function, it is not classified as a modal verb in traditional English grammar.

Very helpful video thank you so much ☺️ I have a question in the part that shows examples using “Would “80% (13:55) “Would you mind if I took a picture” it has to be “Took” In past? I was thinking of “Take ” 😮 “ in present” 🤔 I’m confused. Thank you!
@englishspeaking360
@englishspeaking360 Ай бұрын
Hello! The difference between "Would you mind if I took a picture?" and "Would you mind if I take a picture?" lies in the verb tense and the nuance it brings to the sentence. 1. **Would you mind if I took a picture?** - This uses the past tense "took" and is more traditionally correct in terms of English grammar. It implies a hypothetical situation and is often seen as slightly more polite and formal. This construction is typical in polite requests because it softens the ask by using a past subjunctive form. 2. **Would you mind if I take a picture?** - This uses the present tense "take" and is a more modern, informal way of phrasing the same question. While it might not be traditionally grammatical, it is commonly used in everyday speech. This version can come across as more direct and less formal. Both forms are generally understood and accepted, though the first one is often preferred in more formal or traditional contexts. Thanks for watching my videos, it's really appreciated. 🤩

Why we use be with model verb
@englishspeaking360
@englishspeaking360 3 күн бұрын
Hello! "Be" can function similarly to a modal verb in a few specific situations, even though it is not traditionally classified as one. Here are some instances where "be" is used in a way that resembles modal verbs: 1. **"Be to" Construction (Obligation or Expectation)**: - "Be" is used to express a sense of obligation, necessity, or expectation, especially in formal contexts. - Example: "You are to submit the report by Friday." (This indicates that it is expected or required that you submit the report.) 2. **"Be about to" (Imminence)**: - "Be" is used to indicate that something is on the verge of happening or is imminent. - Example: "The train is about to leave." (This indicates that the train will leave very soon.) 3. **"Be supposed to" (Expectation or Assumed Obligation)**: - "Be" in combination with "supposed to" indicates an expectation or an assumed obligation, similar to "should" or "ought to." - Example: "You are supposed to be here by 9 AM." (This means it is expected or assumed that you will be here by 9 AM.) In these cases, "be" functions in a way that alters the meaning of the verb phrase, similar to how modal verbs like "can," "must," or "should" modify the main verb.

Where is ‘Shall’
@englishspeaking360
@englishspeaking360 4 күн бұрын
Hmmmm... Shall is not used so much any more. These days, SHALL is more commonly used in British English and in formal, legal, or literary contexts. It can be used to: 1. **Express future actions:** Traditionally, "shall" was used with "I" and "we" to indicate future actions (e.g., "I shall go to the store"). However, "will" is now more commonly used in both American and British English. 2. **Express obligation or command:** In legal documents and formal writing, "shall" is often used to indicate a strong obligation or requirement (e.g., "The parties shall comply with all terms"). 3. **Offer suggestions or invitations:** "Shall" can also be used in questions to make suggestions or invitations (e.g., "Shall we dance?"). Overall, while "shall" is still in use, it is less frequent in casual speech and writing.

Indeed. It's often hard to see the difference. In those cases, don't worry about it because English speakers don't know the difference either. Speaking fast and without fear should be your main goal.

I think 'should' has yet another, very strange use case, when it works similarly to word 'if', like "should you need further explanation, call Josh". I've seen this weird construction quite few times when I was working for a British company.
@englishspeaking360
@englishspeaking360 26 күн бұрын
Excellent! This construction implies a polite or less direct way of giving instructions or advice. Instead of saying "If you need further assistance," which is more straightforward, using "should" makes the statement more formal and courteous.

Hello teacher! That's right, I was in Malta trying to take my English to the next level, little by little I'll get there! ; ) Life is treating me weel as I live close to Nature, in a collective farm in the south of France. But French government is pushing us back to the 'rat race' and if the far right wins tomorrow I think the return process will accelerate... :)) It's our duty to support everyone who spread knowledge and try to make this world a little bit better. ; )
