Modding an Arcade1Up Golden Axe from 4-player to 2-player with a GrafixArcade conversion deck

Cool mod! Before I changed up my arcade room setup, I considered doing something like this to my Golden Axe. Very creative solution for the game select joystick.

Absolutely love this! I am limited on room in my arcade too. I hope they come out with NFL Blitz soon and if they dont have a 2 player option, then I will be doing this to it.

What is the 3rd start button for?

Hey there. The way this cab was built by A1Up, it put the game select at player position one attack button and the game start button as the player 1 select button. The problem is that only GA2 uses that position. The other games on the cab all run from the player 2 and 3 positions. So, to make the two-player deck work, I had to include those two buttons from the 4-player deck. Hopefully that answers your question. Best wishes. D.

on the turtles how do you use other players

Golden Axe is something of an oddball for the two player conversion. See my Simpsons 2-player deck mod video, as TMNT will work the same way as that machine. If you do the Simpsons mod with turtles, you’ll have to choose which two turtles you want on each controller. It will mean that there will be two turtle combinations that cannot play together, but the remaining four combinations will work. Also, even with the mod, the live feature still works on TMNT so you can still play in games with three or four turtles fighting at the same time via wifi. If you order the custom 2-player deck, be sure to tell Adrian which two turtles you want on the left and right joysticks. Hope that helps.

On your 4 player game in golden axe can you then only choose player 2 or player 3? I have over 30 cabs and have asked forever for a 2 player conversion option and just came across this.

Thanks for the note. This modification lets you play the player 2 and 3 positions on Golden Axe 2, the only 4-player game on the cabinet. Unlike Simpsons, where each player station is a particular character, Golden Axe 2 allows you to play any character from any player position. For the rest of the games, the player 2 and player 3 positions act as player 1 and player 2. The actual player 1 joystick and attack button are only used for game selection functions on the cabinet. In fact, I wish Simpsons worked the same way, as I'd love to make that one 2 player as well. Good luck with the project!

The real 2-player versions of Golden Axe 2 and Simpsons had different ROMs than what come on the Arcade1up boards

Can u give me an idea on how much longer this J Panel piece is from the original one?

Thanks for the note. The new J panel is 7-1/8” tall. I still have the old one, but it is stored inside the game cabinet, and I need to unscrew the back to get to it, so I can’t give you the dimensions for both. I saved all of the 4-player parts, just in case I get a bigger arcade space and can reinstall the larger deck. Hope that helps.

@@PoppArtstudios thx, u don't have to dig your old one out to compare, I just unscrewed my control deck and u can tell that the new j panel has to be about 1 1/2 inches longer. Thats all I really needed. Thank u for taking your time out of your day to help.
