@MonklynMaine8 жыл бұрын
Diamonds are not scarce, it's a false market "supply" started by De Beers to increase the value of the stones. Same with the idea that they are an "investment," which is also untrue. Not saying people shouldn't love them or buy them, but know that the economics of the industry are mostly fabricated as a marketing ploy. In fact, if you learn more about the economics of diamonds with eyes wide open, it will likely allow you to get a much bigger diamond for cheaper than you might have imagined. Economists like myself might be stereotyped as boring or nerdy, but that doesn't mean we don't like sweet sparkles! I'm trying to pick my engagement ring at the moment and will probably go with Moissanite since they are (in my opinion) superior to diamonds and I get more bang for my buck, but I've also purchased diamonds and understand why people adore them!
@fuzzynavel49488 жыл бұрын
Monklyn, I don't know where you're coming from. Nobody said diamonds were scarce.....diamonds were better in the past. Better quality. That's all I'm talking about.
@MonklynMaine8 жыл бұрын
Fuzzy Navel Xobek's comment that diamonds are scarce is what I was replying to; however, the idea that diamonds were better quality in the past is also false. There are huge amounts of held back stock of all various qualities (both old and new finds) and uncut rough stones, plus ongoing mining and new deposits being discovered. The idea that somehow 'past' diamonds were 'better' doesn't hold up to scrutiny, it's just that more people have additional funds to purchase lower quality gems while the best stones are so expensive they are comparatively rare. Ask a jeweler to find you top notch loose stones and they will be happy to get you any quality/size you want, within reason.

I feel like ring cases are so underappreciated. I'm planning on proposing to my girlfriend next year. She loves everything vintage, especially the 1920's. So the ring I'm getting her is a 1920's inspired ring, and I bought an actual vintage (circa 1930's) ring box. It's got a couple minor cosmetic flaws (because it's 80 years old and made from a material not used anymore, celluloid), but it fits the style of the ring and it just felt like a personal touch.

Lps CryBaby Aw, thanks. :) I feel like proposals should be personalized to the person you're proposing to. I originally tried to find an actual vintage ring, but a lot of the reasonably priced vintage rings were... not very pretty. So I figured a vintage inspired ring that I could buy from a reputable designer and get all of the certifications on that was shiny and beautiful with a real vintage box would be a good compromise. Etsy is a great resource for vintage ring boxes if you're ever in my situation. ;)

I really really want a Mossainite. 2x more brilliant than a diamond and just as strong.
@sapphira316 жыл бұрын
@mary sunshine some reason is that it's much more rare. But I wouldn't recommend for daily wear as tanzanite is only 6-6.5 on mohs hardness. It doesn't cost more though, it's not as valued.

I think diamonds got so popular because they’re beautiful and also very strong. Most gemstones are weak and become scratched pretty easily. But not diamonds. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We were each other's first kiss, the first time I spoke with her it hit me like a freight train. She was a wholesome shy single child, but when she opened up she showed her incredible humor, amazing creativity, and most valuably that her soul was more beautiful than I thought possible. I knew then at 16 that in a few years when we're both old enough, I had to ask her marry me. We dated for a almost a year and her family moved away. I had plenty of girls trying to date me after they found out I was single, I dated a few but none of them made me feel the way she did, I turned down all the girls trying to date and gave up on finding love. Then she appeared unexpectedly on my junior year orientation, I turned the corner and my chest sank, she smiled and like she never left she wrapped her arms around me and nestled her head in my chest. We've been dating since she came back, I'm now almost 20, and she's in her senior year. I never want to lose her again. I've had an unsent letter written to her parents asking for their blessing, and think about how I'm going to ask her every day. We don't see each other as often due to conflicting schedules and stuff, but there's nothing I'm more certain of, I have to ask her to marry me.

When you are able to ask her, keep in mind that you don't have to have expensive things to impress her. My engagement ring was $70 at Wal-Mart in 2013. It's not the ring that mattered to me; it's the man and meaning behind it. It's been almost 7 years this April since we got married, and we're still going strong. Good luck, and best wishes!! :)

Well that's not a classic 80's ring. It should have been a pear shape diamond on a gold band.

I had a very specific ring in mind when we went engagement ring shopping, but if I couldn’t have gotten my first choice, I would have absolutely LOVED a vintage 1920’s ring, they are beautiful!

The first ring from 1910 was the best by far. It's so elegant and the big ones are pretty garish to me.

How exactly was the 60s one garish and large? Or the 80s, 90s and even 2000s and beautiful understated and simple

I love princess cut. I actually clicked on this video cause I saw it on the thumbnail. It was the 2000s that caught my eye. I love it!!

I have my great grandmother's 119 year old wedding ring. No diamond, no glam, but still has a "intricacy" that I cannot figure out. Maybe just the places it has seen.

seriously where do they get all of these good stuff

it's not like you can find stuff from the past easily

+Human Bean probably thrift stores/museums that allow them to borrow them for a short time.

These are the styles, so not necessarily the actual rings. Its clear many of these stones are not diamonds, so a lot of these rings are probably recreations. Still a lot of money in this video, though.

I was just going to say - they either have terrible lighting or fake diamonds (rhinestones, CZ, white topaz etc). Still a nice showcase though!

I think every decade has like a "sister" decade. The 80s had the 90s, the 60s had the 70s, and 2000s has 2010s.

Though they were all beautiful, my favorite was honestly the 1910s (though the 2000s wasn't bad either). I just really like the simplicity of it. Plus, I tend to lean towards more rounded shapes.
