A Lyman Alaskan scope would probably make the rifle a bit more shootable and still be historically correct.

Looks like the bolt isn’t 100% closing per the safety lug on the first rifle. Actually looking at it closer it’s way off from closing as the bolt handle is heavily hanging up on the wood. Should sit flush with the receiver rail. Shouldn’t touch wood at all. That’s a fairly large issue that needs dealt with or it’ll never perform to it’s potential. RR/Gibbs replicas are pretty shoddy when you get into the details. I dumped hours of work into mine to get it sorted out to proper factory assembly.

Just a note, Mauser actions should be loaded into the magazine first then fed into the chamber as opposed to putting the cartridge into the chamber and then forcing the claw extractor over the rim of the case.
@xxshooterxxdm
@xxshooterxxdm Жыл бұрын
It's interesting you say that. The rifle is equipped with a magazine shut off leaver so the rifle can be fully loaded and then single round feed.
@DWhite-el4ih
@DWhite-el4ih Жыл бұрын
@@xxshooterxxdm That’s true, but that is a battlefield feature. These rifles were battle weapons that were ultimately disposable and replaceable. The extractor claw will survive repeated loadings “snapping” over the rim but it’s a thin piece of steel. Even modern Mauser actions are noted to fail at this point. Furthermore, repeating snapping of the extractor over the rim has been known to fatigue the extractor such that extraction reliability can suffer as the claw will start to fall off the rim if the case is fitting tighter in the chamber due to fowling or excessive expansion (these rifles have very loose chamber tolerances). Personally I’ve never tested this but it’s reported. Treat your equipment how you please. I own a Remington 03-A3 made in ‘43. It’s one of my most prized possessions. I shoot it regularly and want to enjoy it and it’s reliability and accuracy for many years to come :-)

Odd, the 1903 will outshoot 99.9 percent of the people who shoot it. It's a factory sniper rifle.

@@zacharytomes5202 according to the Germans who complained about it. They were saying the american soldiers were issued SNIPER RIFLES. The 03s were killing germans at 700 plus yards. So I have to ask, if the 03 was killing men at 700+ yards with iron sights, what would be considered a sniper rifle IN WW one?

@@jackdundon2261 dude all service rifles of the time were 4 minute of angle rifles the technology to make stuff better then that on such a scale wasn't a thing. Aside from that I doubt the Germans had much to complain about the 03 first of because you yanks did Jack shit in WW1 and most troops you did field used M1917 Enfield because you couldn't produce enougb1903's

Is this a Gibbs 03A4. I use to build Springfield 03 M1 & M1A competition rifles. Will you be bedding the action soon ( very important ) it only improves your groups and does not harm the rifle. Also powder choice ( very important ) if you are reloading. Just a suggestion. Place your loaded round into the chamber by hand. DO NOT load it into the magazine ( use magazine only for rapid fire ). When stripping the round from the mag you can alter the bullets seated position in the case neck enough to cause each round to engage the rifle lands at very slightly O'clock position causing the gas pressure to exit behind the bullet in a different position......Also index your cases for slow fire and only neck size the slow fire case do not full length size. Only FL size rapid fire or magazine loaded rounds your groups should improve....Always make sure 'EVERY' screw on the rifle & scope is TIGHT....Good luck and enjoy yr A4.

63 grand sport excellent advice. I found this out the hard way loading rounds for mine. Once I got it sorted with powder and load choice, it’s a tack driver. Love my rock ridge.

Load in the chamber by hand? Controlled feed... Chamber loading will break the extractor on the 03

2 different rifles in the video. The 2nd one has a Remington bolt, 1st one has a post war replacement. Per the safety lugs. First rifle the bolt isn’t closing all the way either, the handle was hanging up on the stock. That’d cause an issue. That’s the iffy gibbs quality though

With updated optics like those we have on the M24, the M1903A1 could still be a viable sniper rifle. Better yet, put the Vortex 5-25x50 Viper PST I have on my Rem 700 on it and I could knock a fly off a dog's ass at 100m with it!
