But "kettle of fish" is an old-fashioned idiom according to Cambridge dictionary so i think we shouldnt use it.

Don't let the dictionary do all your thinking for you. If you can say it and make it sound natural (not overly stressed), then it will be ok =] Plus, I like old phrases. They're very retro ;-)
